Title: Seeking Mk1 Enthusiasts in the Hampshire/Surrey/Berkshire Area
Post by: Victorialou on 07 March 2006, 19:38
Hi All,

I am looking for someone around the Camberley/Yately area who loves to tinkle around and knows their 'sh!t' mechanically with Mk1's.
I do recall there was a few people living in the area but that was 10 months or so ago.

Anyway, to try and keep this brief I have an 82' GTi which has been sat on a friends driveway for 9 months taking a beating from the continuous british rain.   Apparently, all the footwells are wet, the seats have mold on them (lovely) and engine will not jump start.

Here are the facts:
The car has a solid roof with a basic flick up sunroof.
The car did not let in a drop of water when I drove it for several thousand miles through rain and when used jet washes.
I checked the front window/sunroof seals and all looked fine before I left the car in July last year.
Finally, my intentions was not to leave my beloved car, ungaraged for that long !!!

Anyway, I will be coming back from the states at the end of the month to fix/MOT and sell.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why all the water leakage?

So, I am wanting to get some phone numbers of people who are willing to take a look at it, give me some good, honest advice, earn some money and I can go on my happy merry way.

Thanks in advance for any info.
Victoria.

Hello,

Assuming all the door and window seals are still okay, I'd suggest having a look at your scuttle! From firsthand experience of wet footwells, check the following...

Water may be building up in the scuttle (the area below the windscreen where your wiper motor sits). If the drainage holes on either side are blocked the water will rise to a level until it finds some way of working it's way into the cabin. Bear in mind the scuttle area is not 100% watertight so the slightest gap will be enough for the water to escape. It will run down channels in the floorpan *under* the front carpets where it then gathers in a pool in the rear, soaking it from the underside, which is why the front carpets and the mat on top in the rear stays dry. Clever bit of design! If enough water gets in, it will start to soak the front carpets as well.

Peel back your front carpets and you'll see these channels. Be warned - it may smell! Recheck your door seals and make sure the door drainage holes on the bottom of the doors are clear, but I'd bet that the main culprit is the scuttle. I've since sprayed and sealed my scuttle so it shouldn't reoccur. It's a good idea to check the drainage points regularly though, especially in winter with leafs and cr*p flying about. Hope this helps.

That is I,  Alex - no longer a redhead though :)
I have had Rich look at it and it seems to be the same problem, Damn fuel pump.  Not as simple as just a relay/fuse change this time though

Thumbs up for your good memory.

I think the fuel pump relay fuse was a sign of things to come. Bypassed the relay and the jumper that I used got red hot so it looks like the pump is drawing too much power.
Have now removed the pump and will test it with my fluke.

I think there are a combination of problems. Fuse box has been getting wet (common mk1 problem as we all know) and the fuel pump relay and contacts are in a bad way. Battery voltage plummets as soon as I disconnect my car (jump started) so either the battery and/or alternator are f*****d too.

Will pop back on Monday with a spare battery, alternator, some wiring and hopefully a good fuel pump and see what happens.

Got a Saxo VTR clutch to replace tomorrow/over the weekend. Don't know if I'm getting more popular or more cars are breaking down, but I seem to be snowed under with work at the moment! Got an Escort clutch to do after that, 3 timing belts (all VW), a gearbox change on a Rover, an idle problem with a Fiat, an engine change on a mk3 Golf and a head gasket on a peugeot 306 all waiting. Not to mention a few pre-MOT inspections and services that I slot in whilst doing all this. Busy, busy, busy

Hi Guys,

I'm new to this forum, been on others but missed this one!  Interested to see the local Mk1 groupings though. Always got my eye out for budding MK1's in the area.

i'm in Sandhurst so Victoria i was intersested in your post when i saw my area. Like you my MK1 is laid up waiting some Engine changes and a full mechanical restoration. About 70% there so far.

I to was was hammered by local hoodies of smash and grab so sorry Rich the area is getting worse. Mine was done Christmas eve to boot!

What cars are you driving around the area in then Rich and Hazel?  Are you the couple with the gold MK2 and black G60 Corrado?

I recognise you Red baron from Club Gti, did'nt know you were a local guy though. What you driving?

Hope you get the car sorted Victoria, amazing how you can park up a MK1 leave it for a short while and find it has so many things go wrong with it when you come back to it!  I'm trying to get mine started at least three times a week to keep things ticking over.

Give me a shout if i can help in any way when it comes to MK1's had afew now, know a couple of well practised MK1 owners in the area not yet mentioned,

Cheers Domma...........

Domma, alright mate!  My folks live near Farnham but im away most of the time at university in bristol doing motorsport Engineering.  Im currntly driving a Helious blue mk2 16v but am also half way through restoring a black mk1 gti.

Im on the lookout for a caddy tho to replace the 16v as its a bit pricy to run and i want to get back into riding my dirtbike again so the caddy is ideal!

What are you driving about in?

Need a front panel cutting off/welding new one on and some arch repairs if you know anyone handy!
Title: Re: Seeking Mk1 Enthusiasts in the Hampshire/Surrey/Berkshire Area
Post by: Domma on 03 May 2006, 12:59
Hello Mate,

I know what you mean about running the 16V as well as other cars. Petrol prices are a right pinch at the moment. i'm driving around in a 2.0 16V celica at the moment while i restore the Mk1 and it gets through it if you drive it the way you want to

I my Mk1 was a champage Gold 1.3 Driver on brand new standard suspension, looked like it was on stilts!! Taken it off the road now so hope to start stripping it soon.

I have been lucky so far with rust on my MK1 so hav'nt needed any welding done, can't help you with anybody to graft you a front end but i'd suggest you get sombody good to do it.

Good luck though, does your Black Mk1 need lots doing to it?

Cheers  Domma..........

Yeah a fair bit, it was sat outside unused for 3-4 years and has done 219k miles. BUT it is completely original, not a modification in sight! Also its not got any of the usual rust mk1s have.  Front panel is a bit scabby and so im replacing, archs also bit rusty under the trims. Its a project that im doing for my old man to say thanks for all the support hes given/giving me at university.  So far its had:

Stripped shell - glass out
New rust free tailgate - primed
New front wings
Brand new gen front panel and arch repair sections
Rear beam rebuild - new rear shoes/cylinders/brake lines/wheel bearings
Poly rear axle bushes
Re-undersealed arches and underneath.
New springs/top mounts (front + rear)
Brand new gen.standard wishbones/track arms/balljoints/disks/pads.
Gear linkage rebuild
Gearbox and engine removed - 'box cleaned and enameled in silver, new green cap on end
Engine to be stripped - new rings/shells poss rebore
All new engine/gearbox mounts
Glass out respray
Original 9 spokes refurbed.
Brand new exhaust (standard system).

Thats about it so far! need to get cracking this summer, seem to have stalled a bit!

Hows yours progressing? know anyone selling a caddy?

Sounds like a nice present for the old fella!!!!

I used to try and repay my old man with favours when i lived at home and left his driveway looking like a scrape yard with mini's, Beetle's and then Mk1's. They love it really.

Motor Sport engineering! not heard of that one before Mate, how envolved does that get? Is it hands on or more design orientated?  Be hitting the local F1 teams in afew years will we???

Things are going slowely on my MK1, i stripped my old GTi about two years ago, labelled it all up and have started restoring it bit by bit at work and at home when i get the time. While doing it i looked for a mint donor car and as always they are the lesser model MK1's. GTi's always get ragged and abused in the early days and then fall apart in future years in the hands of enthusiasts like us!!!
I spent 18mths looking for it and finally found a late A plate 3door driver with a solid roof. My Gti roted from the factory sun roof down.

I'm doing nothing to my donor car untill i'am at the stage i have 100% everything ready to bolt straight back on in clean fresh paint. Ideas and plans change as time goes on but i'm sticking to an 8V 2.0 witha big valve head and lightened and balanced internals. I know i can manage this on an OK budget and get a really Torquey motor out of it. I hate driving the Celica as i have to be around and above the 5K rev band before it goes. No low down grunt.

Know anybody local good at balancing cranks?

Laters   Cheers   Dom.........

I've lived where I am for 13 years now and, touch wood, no-one in the road has ever had any problems, but I guess you can't take these things for granted........shame

I've got an 'oak green' mk4 Golf TDI that is the day to day work horse and a white mk1 Golf GTI cabriolet that you may see occasionally..........especially if the sun is out

Hazel has the red mk3 Polo GT. You're less likely to see that as she only comes up to stay when the kids are off school.

I've seen that black G60 Corrado a couple of times, last week I saw it on the Minley road.

Victoria's car is nearly there now. After pressure testing the metering unit to ensure that fuel was returning to the tank once system pressure was achieved I bit the bullet and purchased a new pump. Cleared all the fuel lines and changed the fuel filter and now, once warm, it is running as sweet as. Idle is still very low when cold and the idle screw is nearly all the way out so there's something still not quite right.
Alternator is now working, wiring was in a shocking state and the earth path was non existant!

So all that's really left for the moment is to tune it up, check the slow wipers (probably lubricate the linkages) and tidy up some interior trim bits that were broken after the muppets tried to break into it.

Its nice to be working on a mk1 Golf GTI for a change, quite enjoying it. I've been up to my eyes in Saxo's, Clio's, Ka's a Rover and an Escort over the last few weeks! If anyone asks you to look at a broken bonnet hinge on a Ka, run away! What a sh!tty horrible design and an absolute pig of a job to rectify

Rich - your doing a great job mate....! fueling issues are the worst for Mk1's, but you've covered all the area's, you might want to make sure the timing is set-up correctly, sounds like its out by a tooth and dizzy needs adjusting, but I know your on the case! Keep the great work up and get working on your mk1 soon ;)

Make sure you get picture up of this mk1 your working on...  with the approval of the owner of course!

Cheers mate. I think I've covered most of the fuel side of it. Unfortunately a friend I leant it to broke my CO meter so I can't check that, but I think you could be right with the timing. My next step was going to be to  pull the plugs, cap etc., and make sure they're ok and then check the ignition timing.

I have to find my charger for the camera..........god knows what I have done with it but the camera is flat so I'll have to find it.

Rich,

I'll keep an eye out for you! My Mk1 is laid up on the front lawn currently so i'm in the Celica or the wifes rather Purple A class. It comes in handy when you forgot where you parked, only ever one in the car park!!

Do you work on all these cars for a hobby or are you a full on mechanic?  You definatly know your way round a MK1 by what i've read so far.

My Accumilator was so manky when i came to restore it sombody suggested i get one from a later newer 16V as they though they were the same. Don't know if this is true. Do you know of a good source of replacing the hard fuel lines locally for the MK1. I have the ones off the GTi in the garage but n eed to remake them as the connettions are unrecognizable.

I think i may learn alot more about the setting up of the K-Jet when i bolt all the new stuff back together in the future. you may be hearing from me!!!

Infact i know you will!!

I'm an aircraft engineer working permenant nights. During the day I do loads of car work for the locals. Nice to get the odd VW-Audi through but these days I've got just about everything coming through.
I need to finish this one on Thursday as I'm supposed to be starting a Peugeot 306 diesel head gasket straight afterwards.

I've worked a lot with the k-jet system and also have some very useful resourses, including the one's that Si has posted above.

As for the pipes, I haven't had to replace mine...........yet! But what I was looking to do was to use some plastic ones from a mk2. I have a couple of sets in the shed so hopefully I can come up with something as and when the need arises.

I have the link for the K-Jet also!!  Not the other though so cheers for that.

I had seen that blue plastic pipe on a mates Corraddo but did'nt know if it was high pressure. Not sure on how to get the correct fittings to suit the ends either.

Not at the top of my to do list so i can sit on that one for a bit longer.

Took it for a spin yesterday     About time I taxed the cabrio I reckon...........Much more fun than the TDI.

Wow, this post is going on forever!  Not checked it for weeks and its still on the front page.  To all of those who have been reading the saga about my car I have now collected it, clocked up more miles, driven it like a maniac, still not cleaned it yet but it runs like a dream.  I just have to say to those that don't know, Rich did a fantastic job. I don't wish to ramble about bad experiences with previous rip off car mechanics but honestly, my faith in car mechanics has now been restored.  Its a bonus that he knows the Mk1 from top to bottom, not only that but he actually calls you PRIOR to buying any new part to make sure your happy with him doing so.  A full written, several page daily log was given to me with what work was done and what was replaced, tested, cleaned, checked - so on and so forth.  Golf running to perfection and the rate charged was very, very reasonable. I have spent more on footwear that still remains in my wardrobe
I will have no hesitation in using Rich again and I want to pass on the recommendation to others.

Thanks again Rich for all your help and especially perseverance

And Rich........I have decided to keep my car after all. Cant part with it.     Told you I was fickle!

Thank you for those kind words, I'm really glad that you're pleased.
With any luck I have helped to keep another mk1 on the road for many years to come and I'm pleased that it is an enthusiast such as yourself that will be enjoying themselves behind the wheel. Good on you for keeping it
