Just been to a local garage to get the gti looked at,after the clutch started to slip, mechanic told me it would cost £250 to replace my clutch!!! Is this right or is he just trying to get some beer money out of me???
The problem is the gearbox oil was over filled and the clutch began to slip, cos of it being swamped from gearbox etc,so it was all drained and the clutch still slips slightly, the mechanic reckons its a dead horse, and wants my cash....what do you all think?? Is he right, should it cost me £250 or does anyone know where I can get one cheaper in the north east.....also does it definatley need doing?? or is he just winding me up??
-
me too, my clutch has just gone...
would have thought the oil had already done its damage....
mate had one done near me said it cost him £100 plus the clutch..
so on that score £250 would seem a bit rich...
im gonna have a crack at it myself... if i balls it up ill pay the garage to do it.... but at least im giving it a go..
-
£250 is pretty spot on for a clutch change as it takes so long to do it normally. Gearbox out etc.
I would have thought that just putting 3/4 of the reccommended amount in the car for a week and driving it on medium journeys would dry the oil off the plate, then allow you to refill it. :undecided:
-
That's the going rate I've been quoted to replace mine...
-
Maybe it all depends on where u live and who you know eh weedwacker?
Why not phone around some of your local garages see what they say? Or see if u can pickup a clutch cheap n jus pay labour?

Hmmm, dunno mate, gearbox oil gets absorbed into the friction plate and 'contaminates' it....

what slick said^
worth a go before you pay out 250

My clutch has gone too, my local garage (carro's automotive services - see the good guys section!) have quoted me £100 to fit my clutch if i supply the part and i just won a brand new clutch on ebay for 28.00 + postage (dunno what the quality is like tho so not sure if it will cope with my car). Definatly worth trying a few other places i think!
good luck!

Was going to suggest that you buy the clutch yourself and then ask a Garage to fit it. They usually mark up 200%~500% on parts to sting u and supply them with beer for a week!
-
wait till you have a 20vt and need a new clutch..... vw great design on having to buy the whole lot fly wheel and all and oh fitted your looking at over £1000
And they have had a problem and lots going wrong so 1 part has been changed so next time yoru clutch should last longer!!!
-
250 for a clutch, i couldnt be assed bein you lot 50 for the clutch and fit it yourself 3 hours tops or 1 hour in a mk1
-
that seems about right to me, got quoted £200-250 at the 2 local vw specialists, but im gettin it done by s mate for the cost of a clutch, which my lil bro i payin for cos he owes me money!
hope ya get sorted@
-
i bought my clutch off stu (eurocarparts) and got it fitted for about £70-£75...
as it happens greengti, he who fitted mine,i phoned him for ya and he no longer has his garage or else id have passed on his number to you..sorry hun..rather gutted meself now..
best ring around hun..and maybs buy the clutch sep.. :undecided:
Dinx

As they said above whats the going rate up your end. £250 to me sounds very exspensive. VW specialist by mine charge £55 per hour and sachs clutch cost £60-70 from gsf. Book time to change clutch on 8v gti is 2hrs. Done my own in 1hr 20mins.
-
Me and a mate done gearbox replacement on his mk2 16v in about 5 hours, and i thought that was ok
So how do you manage to do the job in an hour?
-
You must be slow  Im bmw tech took me and a mate to do engine swop on my old 16v in that time. started it at 10am had it tuned, roadtested and checked over and back home by 4pm. Inc 1hr drive to work and back. Swopped from kr to 9a.
-
Nice one
Still say 250 is as cheap as you'll get a clutch done at a garage, well in surrey
Anyway people that complain about paying 200 quid on their car really need to do it themselves!

ok - I was quoted 450 from VW garage for a clutch change on my mk1 golf. I would expect from around 300-500 depending on garages.
I ended up doing it myself, bought Sach clutch - 80 pounds and took the engine and gearbox out of the car whole (easier to do) and took gearbox off and replaced clutch - I put on another gearbox - as I'm rebuilding mine at mo - 1st/2nd Synco gone. Put engine and gearbox back in and did this all in 4 hours (did clean up other parts of the engine as well) - so a garage with all the equipment will not take more than 4 hours to do this job... if they do - they must be a right bunch of cowboys!!!
-
hi,just to let you know,,a mate of mine just had his clutch changed mk2 8v,took them four hours but only cost him £130 .from a cluch centre in wolverhampton.not sure how they will make any money from doing it but thats what he paid.so over£200 is a little on the high side i think. good luck

Just as well none of you lot live in surrey, you wouldn't even get your front tyres changed for a hundred quid let alone your clutch
-
^^it's all about retreads and dodgy handling if you do get it under a ton....
-
I reckon book time for a clutch is 3.5 hours on average.
I challenge anyone who reckons that a garage will do the job for a hundred quid to post the garage details up with the phone number

I do live in surrey. Just have to know the right people.
-
Yeah i agree.
But thats not what this thread was originally about.
Not everyone knows someone unfortunately, so to suggest that over 200 quid is steep is, well rather misleading.
-
True.
If you are willing to travel i can put you onto a friend who might be able to work something out price wise for you. IM me matey.
Edit: it was directed at agreengti, but he appears to have deleted his account.

Thanks for the offer.
I get my tyres off ebay, there are loads of companies selling new tyres on there now, and I'm lucky to know a tyre fitter, so get some pretty cheap deals
As for anything else on the motors, well nothing has beaten me yet
So where abouts in Weybridge are you from? i grew up in Walton.
