careful saying things like that, the regulars will be round in force before you know it!

Easiest way to get pics into your posts is to get a photobucket account (www.photobucket.com) then u can upload the pics from your pc onto there. All you have to do then is copy and paste the third line of text from under the picture (think its the image line) into your post.

Sounds complicated but its not so bad.

Alternatively if you send pics to philippearson247@hotmail.com il get them on here for ya.

Welcome to the site by the way

Welcome to the forum.

To post pics, open a free account on www.photobucket.com upload your pictures to it from your pc and when they are in there copy the third text field under your pic and paste it into a thread and the pic should be seen by all, so quickly now.

I see Phil's already told you but I couldnt be bothered editing my post.

welcome to the forum..

there's a fair few common faults with the mk4's (i should know, mine's had most of them  ) but some of them depend on the year of the car.. got an age in mind ?

have a browse through the mk4 section, use the search too for things like "common problems" then just ask anything specific that you want to know.

toph.

yer im thinking around the 2000 possibly 99 one, but it all depends on the milage, most of the ones i have seen have an massive milage..., it will be the 150bhp, as i think once its re-mapped will be quite fast enough for lil me, will keep up with some of my mates, waste afew, and get trashed by 3 or 4, but i WILL be the chick wasting the boys

I'd expect more than that though, revo reckon 200+ with theirs. :undecided:

Post by: Katie-Pie on 31 January 2006, 15:16
yer, i was lookin on a VW tuning website, and i dont no how true this is, but they reckoned that just running it at 14psi would take it up to 195 bhp...
I am hoping mine will be roughly 200bhp maximum when im done, but i want to re-map the ecu then sort out the handling before i do anything else...

Dont want to go rolley polley again, (did that the other day )

who me?

i like them in silver if i was to have a preference, although now u mention red ones i have seen one of those knocking about my part of the world, nothing to be sneezed at
Title: Re: Golf Virgin
Post by: topher on 31 January 2006, 15:34
shopping trolley ?!! thems fightin' words.

i like the anni, prefer the R32  ... although i might end up with a TDI anni for work since my 1.8T is drinking 2 tanks of optimax a week.

as for the tuning, the remaps do a lot more than up the boost, all sorts of timing and fuelling banks are adjusted. with a decent exhaust/cat and remap you might just hit 200bhp with a 99 car, they started putting slightly bigger turbos on the later models which give a bit more pull.
Title: Re: Golf Virgin
Post by: Neaty on 31 January 2006, 15:39
Bloody hell, 1.8T and a rallye thats just plain greedy topher, i think u should donate one of them to me

Would prefer an R32, goes without saying but would for about 5 or 6 grand cheaper the Anniversary is a good understoody, especially with it re-mapped!

yer, me and my bf went for a tumble just over a week ago in his glanza  :sad:was horrible

and ofcorse the r32 is nicer than the 25th, but it is in a different league i think :undecided:
Also, yer im getting it re-mapped, WHEN i get one, was jst quoting what was said on a website, jst wondered if there was any truth in it, as i am abit of a self confessed dits when it comes to the mechanical side of cars :embarassed:

Post by: golfpro on 01 February 2006, 11:23
apparantly its called work but i havnt figured out why yet. I just play around on here, teach people how to belt a little white piece of plastic with a stick, then to rub it in, i go do that myself!

Oh the hard life of a golf professional.

What do u do then? And how old are you btw? hardly look old enough to be gettin a 1.8t from your picture (meant in a nice way)
Title: Re: Golf Virgin
Post by: Katie-Pie on 01 February 2006, 11:32
im 17, 18 in september... am looking to either go for the 1.8t or an MR2 gt uindesided yet... The only thing, from looking at this forum is that the vw's handling looks like its quite an isssue, and i really dont like the thought of a car wallowing around on the roads...but as i said im undesided...
Obviously you are bias to the VW love, but what would you do... get a mint mr2 (maybe turbo, depends on insurance) or spend like 5k on a 1.8t??????????
Title: Re: Golf Virgin
Post by: golfpro on 01 February 2006, 11:39
good luck on gettin it insured! goin to cost almost as much as the car!

And to be honnest I would deffinately get a 1.8t over an mr2. as standard the 1.8t has slightly stiffer susps than other models i think, but if you look around and are prepared to travel you may even find one thats already on coilovers or at least been dropped a bit. will work out less than lowerin it yourself.

So are you workin then? surely you wont be buyin one of those on a students budget!?!
Title: Re: Golf Virgin
Post by: Len on 01 February 2006, 12:17
Go for the Golf every time!

The handling is fine! Believe me!!!!
Title: Re: Golf Virgin
Post by: Dom Mk3 on 01 February 2006, 12:24
I'm a man so wouldn't get the MR2 on principle, but it would be a tough choice. Rear wheel drive is mightily appealing!
Title: Re: Golf Virgin
Post by: martinb on 01 February 2006, 12:28
^^^^

Hi! yeah i would go for the golf too! (but as you said we are all biased )

Insurance will be bad enough on the golf let alone an mr2 turbo as they are jap imports. MR2's are cheaper too buy tho.

hey welcome katie

i will be selling my 1.8t fairly soon hopefully to get an anniversary
mine is v reg registered in november 99 56.000 full vwsh let me know if ur interested
Title: Re: Golf Virgin
Post by: Katie-Pie on 01 February 2006, 19:02
ok, im gonna have to respond to all your posts in order as im getting ocnfused

1) Insurance is only £1100 golf is £950 1 years no claims    (thats on diamond i love bing female )
2) No im a "student" and i work, but i got given a car worth about 2k, so it all adds up. plus got some money saved
3) Real wheel Drive =     , however, i shall have to keep the keys hidden if i got it, as i have had, lets say afew requestes to "rag it in the car parks" from certain people...sooooo not happening...
4) yer, il be lookin to spend about 4k on the mr2, so il be able to get a nice 96 gt (possibly t-bar) for that, as i will have about 5 or jsut over to spend, so id rather get a mint mr2 than a not so hot 1.8t
5) thanks for the offer, its a lovely looking car, (assuming its the one in ur pic) but if i do get a golf it will be a 3dr

I have both an MR2 and a Golf GTI T (picked it up yesterday).

The golf feels solid and drives well. Its faster than the N/A MR2 I have and is so more practical having 5 doors, a boot (hurrah!) and more than two seats. The Mr2 gets tons more looks than the Golf though and has a nice 'lay down' style seating position.

Overall I would say get an MR2 now rather than later on in life as at the moment your young and practicality isn't your style. When you get older grab a nice GTI T and sing the praises of seats, boot space and a comfortable ride!

To be honest I still think you should go for the Golf, but only on a practical level. I mean do you take mates places? Is 4/5 seats gonna be better than 2?

If you just want a posing car why not consider an MX5????

No mate, i was close to it a few weeks ago, as some people will know. Now i am deciding to stick with it, and will be looking for an oil burner come end of summer. Garage mine up and get the saving kitty going. Big plans for the engine and a few other bits and peices, hopefully over 200bhp will be seen in the future. ( although at the moment i am happy with my 190 )

I still have it, it's garaged around my folks place. It is a 2.0 16v n/a UK MR2 (UK models are slower but at least you know the history of the car from the day it was born and not from the time it was brought to the country!).

It's a good car, nicely built but if you need a cambelt change or anything that requires the engine to come out its expensive to fix. In the two years I have had it I have only had problems with the brakes. A common thing with MR2's are that brakes seize. You can recondition them but I felt buying new sets all round was a better idea. I have the rev6 lights on the rear which add a 'skyline' effect however the build qaulity of them are awful for the price I paid. Appart from that the only other things I did was the stereo. Easy job to do in the MR2's as they come appart nicely. Amp under the bonnet sub behind the passenger seat and nice components in the doors. Sounds good and when the passenger pisses you off you give them some early bowel movements by increasing the bass :)

Hope this all makes sense and helps you!

mx5= yucky
Yer, i do take mates places, but we all drive and tend to go out in force, so it wouldnt be that bigger deal, and id still have room for a passanger.
in reality 4/5 seats is going to be better than two, but i can live without til i get older and settle down....

hmmmm...

oh i forgot to say thanks to  'kompliance' thats really cool, toyota are generally really reliable cars arnt they. What year did you say it was?

He didnt!

Think on this one then.

Are there many shows/events for Mr2's?????

There are loads for VW's!!!! Plus you can mingle with the air-cooled lot.
So big stuff like Bugjam, which is a tent job and loads of mates you are gonna need the space!

Plus you will get to meet some of us friendly bunch!

I thought we were trying to encourage her towards buying the golf len, not put her off for life

The old boy does have a point tho. There are some great events around the country over the summer time. I did a couple last year and met up with every one from here. Theyre a crackin bunch of people. You do feel part of a club when you get there and all these people youv just met are gettin you pissed and talkin about all things vdub!

If you do go for the golf (and again i recommend it) then you really should make an appearance at one of the shows. Bring a car full of mates, adequate lubrication (BEER) and a tent and youl not regret the decision you made....

...til the morning after, when, like us youl say never again, until 11.30 and get back on it again!

JAE and Japfest are amongst the more popular events for jap cars and there are also the two main clubs for MR2's running all year.

Post by: kompliance on 07 February 2006, 10:39
Hi Katie,

With regards to your PM;

A quick low down of my experiances with an MR2 (DISCLAIMER: Also includes my opinion as an owner)

Well built cars as far as interior goes. I ripped mine appart to fit a 10" sub / 1100W rms amp with some components and found that everything is well held together so there isn't really much question on rattles unless someone has been abusing the car. With the stereo up the outside of the car doesn't rattle either, in fact you can barely hear the stereo from outside which is fantastic as it add's to privacy. MR's have a comfortable interior, I drive from London to Brighton a lot and never feel uncomfortable at all. I should also mention the driving position as it differs from what your probably used to. They are a 'lay on the floor' car. A real sporty feel and I grew well accustomed to this.

Exterior is good as these cars rarely rust. Window rubbers usually need replacing due to the age of the cars. I replaced the rear lights on mine and although it looks better I fear for the poor 3rd party build quality. If you ever go to look at one of these cars check all the lines of the bonnet and rear end. People crash MR2's as they are very poor to drive in the wet. They handle like a god in the dry but come the winter you have to pay attention to speed in the corners as you will (and this is no reflection on your driving) spin 180 degrees and wave to the traffic on the other side of the road.

Engines are good and strong. Keep them topped up with oil/coolant and water and they will out live c0ckroaches. I have 139k on mine and still starts every time on the button. I would bring your attention to repairs as cambelt changes and any work that requires engine to come out is very costly. General servicing is easy as the oil filter/sump plug are within easy reach.

Finally I would add I had a great time in my MR2 but these cars impractical and dangerous in the wet. If your happy with your skill as a driver, the two seats and (if your due one) a cambelt change (£450.00 for a rubber belt inc fitting) then I would say for a two seater car you can't really buy better. The alternatives in my opinion don't look as good/work as well as the MR2 (and yes I'm aware some people would kill me for saying that about the mx5).

Hope this all makes it a little clearer Katie. I can't comment on the GTI T just yet as I have had it barely a week and so far wouldn't count myself ready to say yay or nay (but its a yay ;))

wow
just read from page 1..................... im wasted now....

mr2 is a good car,,,, very tail happy in the wet though.... i know my old one was and that was just a 1.6 mk1.
best handling ones as the handling was done by lotus.

golf on the other hand is a totaly diffent animal...
guess it depends on what your after..

if you want a total package get a scooby wrx.
or for the same money get a well sorted mk1 and poss have some pocket money....

its your hard earned...

heya, yer, i think i have made up my mind.

I figure, that i have the rest of my life to have a practical car, when im older with kids and have to fit as buggy in the boot the 1.8t (or the 2.0 by that point) will be the one for me, i am still in love with them, but i am going to, sorry guys, go for a sw21 n/a mr2 mk2. Hopefully JDM, insurance permitting (lol) as i would quite like as newer one as possible, defo 94 onwards as they had some changes made to their set up at that time. Although i will be ditching the big rims and going for 16's with f1 tyres me thinks, or whatever my bf tells me will give me the best handling at the time..hehe

My friends have been trying to persuade me to get a del sLoW and be part of team honda, as there are quite a collection on the island now. (ek9, very rare crx in malano red, vti-s, s2000, itr, eg6 sir, so on and so forth)
Does anyone live near the island?

Still keep me posted on any meets or cruises you guys are doing as i would love to come up and see all your mean machines.

BAH.. Rubbish...

The island is good, has a good car community, but, the roads are apsolutly apauling, so unfortunatly, in the winter months when "silly season" begins, (what we call the time of year when the roads are at their worst and ppl dont adjust their driving to the conditions) people get hurt.
One day this silly season, there were 11 car accidents in one day.  5 people died in one day

But the island still rocks :D

yer im thinking around the 2000 possibly 99 one, but it all depends on the milage, most of the ones i have seen have an massive milage..., it will be the 150bhp, as i think once its re-mapped will be quite fast enough for lil me, will keep up with some of my mates, waste afew, and get trashed by 3 or 4, but i WILL be the chick wasting the boys
WOW, sounds like you know your sh!t when it comes to cars, i like that, chicks over here (U.S.) don't really get into they're cars they say things like "i got to get that thingy replaced" or something like that. or they're have they're boyfriends fix up they're whips for them. i'm impressed and welcome. (i'm new here also)

well, pretty much all of my mates are into cars, most of them are boys.
My girl Friends laugh at me as whenever we are out im like ooh look at that...*name the car* or mmmm noice *name the car* they all think im mad.

Iv always been into cars hehe. But i have to admit, when it comes to the actual stick ur head under the bonnet and install an, induction kit, for example, im not very good at all.
But i would like to think i could give the boys a fun for their money. hehe

What part of America are you from. I am strongly thinking of moving out there to coach (ice skating)
