Title: advice needed, just seen a cab!
Post by: golfpro on 13 December 2005, 18:38
just driven home and had my eye caught by a mk1 cab thats been re-sprayed in a bright metalic blue, recently. its a 1.6, got the klipper kit fitted, 16" fox alloys, had a 40 mil drop, stainless zorst, single light grill, all been smoothed, lots of chromey bits. Whoever did the spray didnt do the engine bay which looks a little scruffy but all seems in order as far as i can tell.

Its a real eyecatcher and heres the bit i like, only got 67k on the clock! its an '87. Its lush

the roof is white but needs changing b4 too long, has a couple of small holes. The drivers seat has a little stain and a small tear but thats about all thats up. She asked for 2500 then said she wanted it gone b4 christmas if possible. and when i said 1750 to see what she said she sounded keen.

I want your advice wether i should do it or not!?! how much would i look for a new roof? would need to be a white one really. What about a re-trim or a new drivers seat?

Help me ppl, i recon a christmas could be purchaced here is it a good price?

its similar to urs at the front di, bumper has been smoothed and plate put below, just indicators left on it. all the lights are clear, it really has had some stirling thrown at it! Il keep u all informed about how i get on. Insurance is the only falling point. I dont know if i can afford to insure two cars so the mk3 will have to go. oh well!

Pro

If it is a 1.6 then it must be a really early one. If it has a carb I would not touch it. If it has fuel injection I would pay no more than a grand.

I got a ex concours 1.8 GLI Cabby from Ebay in the late summer for £825. It is a stunner and only had 65k with masses of history. Do not let the heart rule the head

mine was a cat d   paid £400 for it
110k miles just had a push in the lock and the plastic cowling broken, no wire damage at all...
also any ideas what would stop a power hood working.....
other than a fuse or a faulty switch...

Check that there's some oil for the hydraulics. If you look in the boot there's a cylinder (for lack of a better description) and it will have a min/max level on it, if the oils low then go to VW and get some hydraulic fluid, I've got some in my boot so I can probably get a part number if required. Not saying this will fix it, but it wont help if it's not got any. If you need any help with the fuses and relays, check this website http://dana.ucc.nau.edu/~kaw5/electrical.htm

Is there no way for you to order a hood off a company in england and fit it yourself?.
Title: Re: advice needed, just seen a cab!
Post by: Dinky on 14 December 2005, 18:57
Phil..sumone on here had a video of how to fit a hood urself..or i think gib actually got a coachtrimmer to do it...depending on where/how big the tear actually is..cudn you get a cover for it and get it fixed the next time u were goin home or summit?

seen a few on ebay lately as well... had been told its a tit of a job to do..its one of them things though do you get it or not, if you do you might regret it... but ive wnated one for years but the mrs wasnt too keen.... now shes gone what the hell...

also its better to regret something youve done rather than something you havent done...at the end of the day its only money isnt it...
you only live once...

stop giving him ideas! e's been talked out of this! he wanted a camper...
Title: Re: advice needed, just seen a cab!
Post by: gibby on 15 December 2005, 11:02
I will tell you now you will not be able to fit a new hood yourself without any coachtrimmer experience, they are supposed to be b1tches to do and if you reckon you can cut out the hole for the back window and do it right first time, then go for it.  Expensive mistake if you get it wrong.

If she takes something stupid like £500 for the cab then buy it, if you pay 1k for it then it'll cost you between 4 - 700 to get a new hood bought and fitted properly so that's 14 - 1700 in it before you start doing anything else, but at the end of the day it's your money and your choice.  :undecided:

P.S. Cab's are for big girly hairdressers anyway.

Post by: Madone_si on 15 December 2005, 11:33
what is everyone saying about putting new hoods on being a b*tch to do - that is total crap if you know what your doing. Phil if you get the cab mate I'll come over and fit the hood for you - I've done a few of them and they look perfect. The only real nervous part is cutting the hole for the back window - but I've made up a template for that now - so no real big issue on that side.

The only other issue to check is the frame that goes around the back window - if that is rotten - it will be expensive to replace unless you get another one from some muppet from ebay!!! hehehe

You don't want a cab mate - as gibby said - its a girly hairdressers car...!!!!!!!!!!      Thus why I've got one and gibby!!!!!!!

pro's and cons list has been done and its a big fat no for the cab. The thought of a big old smelly camper is just more appealing! The more I save the better looking camper I afford, the more chanc iv got of gettin the insides trimmed to match and the colour Im after etc. Now wheres Vaughn when you ned him!?!

Oh and my saving boots are well and truely on dinx! Think il probably need around 7-8k to get a stunner so thats my target.
