hi ppl i was jus wondering if u could say on average how long it would take to fit a new water pump on myy 88 golf 16v?? and wot damage would it do if i drove it for a while, as its still making a noise as the bearings av gone
-
if its anything like mine then it'l take an age...one of the bolts has been rounded off in the past and i can't get the thing off!! if it wasn't rounded off it wouldn't take long tho...depends if you got power steering or not..without it would be a piece of p!ss...prob an hour...counting tidying up afterwards
-
i would say about 2hours.. and nooooooooo dont drive it if its overheating
-
lol nasty, no it doesnt have power steering luckily lol!! is it quite straight foward??
-
its not over heating just noisey, should this be ok??
-
I wouldn't drive it, if the bearings are on the way out it is always going to risk blowing at the completely wrong moment and screwing your engine up.
Replacing a water pump should be fairly straight forward, just drain the system, remove the 3 bolts (i think) that hold it in then slot it out from under the car. Again just reverse to get it back in. Although i would personally allow myself about 3 hours to do it in, just so i was sure that it was all correct and i didn't feel like i needed to rush.

definatly don't drive it if it's noisy, sure to let go when your stuck in traffic

you will also have to swap the pully over and the bottom hose connector...think that holds a thermostat :undecided:

ok nice one peeps, do i have to remove the cambelt though or not??? im going to attempt it tonight!!
-
Nooooo!!
It runs off the fan belt / drive belt whatever you want to call it...
-
you will need to TDC it though, just as a precaution.

:undecided: got me on that one...why's that?
-
I always TDC mine, like i said just a precaution, guarenteed to knock things that shouldn't be knocked. mind you i always end up messing around and moving onto doing P/S/Alternator belts aswell, which consequently needs changing.... AGAIN..
-
OK cheerz ppl, so should take bout an hour to 2, it doesnt have power steering, and i think its jus drain the water move the alternator out the way, remove the 4bolts that hold the whole pump on,dis connect the thermostat and the 3 hoses, then remove and replace?? is it really this simple???

Yes mate, you should be able to do it in about an hour. Try to get all the airlocks out of the coolant when you are done as well. by runnning the engine with the coolant header tank cap off for a while, until any air locks bubble through.

can be done in under half an hour, aslong as you dont f**k owt up. good luck
