My 8V speedo only reads up to 120mph. Just had a look on volkswizard and he's got an 8v with 140mph on the clock. Anyone any idea why this is?
-
I also have a 8v Gti, 120mph on the clocks.
Prety sure that the 140mph clocks will have been a replacement item from the 16v Gti.

16v clocks go up to 160mph
I'm not sure but I think 8v clocks may have been changed to 140mph late on in the models life, maybe by then they had realised a well run in 8v could quite easily pin the speedo needle! What year was the one on wizard???
-
I can't work out why they put 160mph clocks in the 16v's
I know they're not exactly slow  but that's being a tad optimistic, or was it all part of the sales pitch? "Ooohh, look at that..the clocks say 160mph. Best get one!"
Seriously tho..does anyone know why??
-
The one on Volkswizard is an H reg, mines a J reg and like i say only reads 120mph. Maybe mines got a replacement clock off an older car or something, wouldn't surprise me, everything else has been changed!!
-
Some 8vs got a 140 mph speedo, I assume the 16v had to have a 160mph speedo so it looks like it'll go faster than the 8v ;)
-
my 1.8 tour goes up2 120 and so does my sportline

when i first had my 16v in the early 90s i had her showing 143. if i had of had the balls and the petrol i would of red lined her to see what would happen. the rev counter was showing 7150 at the time so only had another 150rpm to go before the limiter spoilt the show. i was considering it but the trip was giving 1.8miles to the gallon. if the needle was accurate i was covering 1 mile every 25 seconds, which gave me approx 3 minutes of petrol on board at the time.
i doubt though whether 143 was real though despite what the needle was showing although checking it last year it does get scarily accurate when pushing on at 120+.

all i know is that early 8v's with 140mph clocks feel quicker. is it just me?
ive got 160mph clocks in mine just for the sake of it.
-
I've heard romours that some 8vs were quicker than others, but nothing solid to prove that they are or why :)
-
why bother getting het up about top end speed anyhow, the closer you get to the top end of the car the further out the speedo is going to be, I.E. it says you are doing 140, in reality you are only doing 120.
There is only one way to measure the speed accurately on the cheap in a car, and that is a GPS system on something like a road angel.

Dunno, my my bros standard 8v is running 125bhp instead of 115.....

My speedo goes up to 140mph. Not sure why some are 120mph and others 140mps. i need to fix mine as the rev and mfa don't work on mine the 140mph clocks seem to be a lot more rare though
-

-
my golf had 140 clocks in when i first got it then i put 160 ones in

You can just buy a normal set of 120mph clocks and swap your speedo into it ;)

Mine is J-reg, 1990. it reads 120mph.
Wont do those speeds tho!
-
ive had 2 f regs and the newer 89 one had 140 clocks and the later one has 120 clocks which is an 88 :S but both go off the clocks gps is only good if you got the bottle to take your eyes off the road and look at it lol but at 70 in the new one(88) the gps says im doing 65 :S

1985 mk2 gti 140mph clocks

Okay depending on the make of the clocks, most of the Motometer clocks had 140 on them and the VDO usually have 120 in an 8v.
One thing to bear in mind, the 120 & 160 clocks are geared to run with the red gearbox drive gear, the 140 clocks need to have a white gearbox gear, otherwise all reading including the MFA can be out.
Our 8v originally had 120 VDO clocks, at some point in it's life prior to us acquiring it they had changed the clocks for 140 items but not the drive gear, we picked the car up and it was returning 40 mpg, not the case as we all know unless drive 55 mph.
The speedo on the car is out by 3 @ 70, actual mph being 67 and then the further up you go the more it becomes wayward, 5 @ 100, actual mph 95. All of this also alters with the amount of tread on the tyres and so on.
A good 8v with no real modification should be good for 115 and you should be able to hit the rev limiter in top gear.

140MPH Clocks in my 1990 8v. Motometer ones. She's done an indicated 110 MPH with a few hundred rpm to go !
But yes I do realise that the speedo can't be trusted at these kind of speeds.

Yes, gps is the only way to know for sure. But I don't think many speedos are 20mph out, mines only5-6mph out from any indicated speed from 95-145mph (139mph in reality according to gps).

Yeah and your gonna need 160mph ones if you ever get that engine in!
