The clock is ticking towards the end of my Clubsport’s warranty (December) and after the “bing bong” woes of earlier this year I’m nervous about owning it out of warranty.
To be fair it’s been fine over summer, not a bong for months and (touch wood) been generally trouble free over the 32(?) months I’ve had the car. Barely so much as a few tiny stonechips and a slight buckle in one of the aftermarket wheels owing to a huge pothole. The brand new originals can go back on come sale time.
It’s time to look at the options…
A Golf R? No point getting another Clubby and shelling out the thick end of £20k extra for the privilege. Not going to happen. Very reluctant to shell out £20k extra on an R despite having a loose order on one. I’d rather put that money into paying off a lump of mortgage because my 5 year deal ends in September/October. Max deposit and around £200 a month could see me in a PCP deal for the car ordered.
Pros: it’s a Golf, the rear diff, heated steering wheel
Cons: it’s a Golf, err… that’s about it. Oh, I’d need to service and MOT my Clubby before it’s built plus run it out of factory warranty which is dead money and risk.
An Audi S3 Black Edition. My lad has an S-Line and it’s a nice car so this is a big contender. Stupid high APR on PCP but £2.5k ‘contribution’. Similar list price to the R and also wouldn’t put my own savings into it. Better spent elsewhere.
Pros: no silver trim (just don’t like it on a performance car), available at short notice, it’s different yet familiar.
Cons:it’s a modern Audi, leather seats, no heated steering wheel (car kept outside and 5am cold start ups in winter)
MG4 Xpower. Why the hell not?! It’s different. Definitely wouldn’t want to sink too much cash into one but it’s mad fun.
Pros: FAST! A leap into the unknown. Can get one quick. Long warranty not that I’d keep it long. Can pre heat cabin to defrost in winter
Cons: where do I start? Expensive insurance, unknown parts supply if fixes are required, lowish rent interior, spongy seats.
A35 AMG.
Pros: good availability, low APR PCP, quite like the looks.
Cons: I’m not a middle class white female, probably loads of other things, I’ve not really thought it through.
M135i. Been there done that. Great car but… it’s just not drawing me in to consider another even though I’d not hesitate to recommend one as I can’t think of a bad thing about it.
Keep mine.
Current fave option. Would rather bin off mortgage debt than buy another car. Doubts remain whether getting a VW extended warranty would cover any bonging if they return when the weather cools again.
Pros: I own it, I really like it, it doesn’t cost £600 a year to tax
Cons: lack of faith in it remaining bong free
Opinions? Ridicule? Anything I’ve missed?

Paying a mortgage off early is a nice target in life if that affects your decision making process to that degree.
-
The jump to an R for £20k. For more bongs.
Sit in an A35 to see if the seats suit you. Not for everyone.
The All In from VW must be looking an amazing deal. Because it is. Check it out carefully - you can even pay monthly! Buy at up to age 6 too……
BONGS might even be fixed by then.
-
As an a35 owner, I can’t recommend it. I’ve had so many issues with mine, and despite the local dealer being great, the supplying dealer were awful and amg customer support basically may as well not exist. For reference, it took them over 3 years to finally fix the seats which had sagging leather on delivery. It was a known issue with the cars and a fox was promised within 12 months. It also absolutely eats tyres, I got about 8000 miles out of the Pirelli’s it can on, and about 12000 out of a set of ps4s. A mate who does a bit more motorway sway numbers about 1000 miles more than that, but got 20000 out of the ps4s he had on his golf r. It’s a great car when it does work, and the interior is nicer, quality control issues aside, it’s just not as good to drive on British roads as the golf clubby/GTI imho.

Don’t fancy paying an extra £200 a month purely in interest charges out of some bankers whim. It grates with me.
I’ve got one eye on retirement and have dropped my earnings a lot in recent years.

Will a new Golf with new hardware bong? I’m hopeful that it wouldn’t.
The all in one won’t be as comprehensive as the original factory warranty, it’s an insurance product after all.
Thanks for the A35 tip :afro:

Your previous posts on your A35 were at the forefront of my mind Doc. :afro:
Thanks for reaffirming, that one is definitely off my short shortlist now.

Sounds like my journey and the GTI was part of the decision, IMO it’s definitely making it part of the mix.

@Exonian; go with your current favourite option; keep your car, get a good warranty and work at reducing / paying off your mortgage.
My car will be three years old next month and I’ve no plans to change it. There’s nothing wrong with it and it’s only covered around 12.5k miles so financially, IMHO it makes no sense to me to change it; I’ll be getting an extended warranty instead.
-
Only you can answer this one.
Me personally I wouldn't be owning a mk8 out of warranty and especially if they bring out a 8.5 as you know what VW are like. I know you wouldn't do what i would do. But just for reference If itvwas me i would drop back down to a 7.5 but that's just me.
-
It’s a tricky one, not helped by 14 hikes in the base rate.
I’ve extended the lease on my 7.5R twice now and it will run out next summer with the car aged 5. I’ll have to go through the same process as you - hot hatch ( if so which one ? A GTi with wheels, paint, HK is over £530 a month which is £250 more than the R ), a Tiguan R, an X1M35i, rs3, an m3…the list goes on and one and that’s before we discuss the horrors of insurance…
I appreciate I’ve been zero help by the way…
I’m beyond help so don’t worry about that side of things! 😁
RS3 was my longer term plan back along but Tractor Dave and ££££ have put me off that idea now.
M3 would be nice for a short while just for the hell of it but they’re £80k plus now, there are several parked up close to where I live, and they’re a bit too big for me. A great car to lease if you’re on a fat salary. Unlike my neighbours I lack the latter.
M135iX is a fab car and I’d recommend you try one. Trouble is us VW types tend to drift back to what we know.

Wise words as ever SR
Unfortunately when it comes to cars I tend to go the slightly sensible side of absolutely stupid!
Oh Abarth 500e and next years Mini JCW Electric are also wildcards. I fancy trying electric to see how it goes.

I actually really like some of the mk8 features.
There’s no going back now!
Besides, if I were to trade back to a 7.5 I’d end up paying more for an older car that I’d not cared for myself from new.
No heated steering wheel on a 7.5  and the mk8 headlights are amazing which is important to me as I drive a lot in the dark.
-
I’d keep the Golf 100% and chuck the money into the mortgage.
That clubsport is an amazing all round package, supply of new cars is really improving so discounts and support from manufacturers will be improving over the next 6-12 months.
The current cost to buy a car equally as good as yours albeit “new” is silly compared to what you paid for yours. So probably seems hard to swallow spending so much money on what might be a minimum improvement in all round car….
But knowing you this is the longest you’ve had a car for, so I’d be amazed if you don’t have a new car by the end of September
-
I still remember that beautiful MK6 GTI your traded in with us
-
How much would a dealer give you for a direct swap into a new CS? There are a fair few of cancelled orders floating about at the moment in some lovely specs.
I’ve done 1450 miles in my CS (built May 2023) and obviously it is far too early to say about wider reliability but so far it hasn’t bonged. And even if it did then you’d have a fresh warranty.
Of course there is the option of purchasing a 4/5 year term warranty from VWFS for your existing Clubbie?
In the long lead up to my CS arriving, I often wondered “what else could I buy?”
Mk8 245? Nice but in my head the CS represents better bang for buck
7.5 TCR? Lovely but getting old now tech wise and most have been ragged
Golf R? 4WD spoils the fun and I can’t get the R-Line connotations out of my head
S3? Too dull
Cupra Leon 300? Too ugly
Merc A35? Bling tastic and nasty shoddy interior build
M135i? Close, but doesn’t drive as well as a CS and ugly nose.
M240i? Ticks nearly every both but ludicrously expensive and still not exactly a looker. FAST though
RS3? Looks cheap inside and out compared to the latest Golfs but you can’t argue with the engine
I don’t think anything else is even worth considering, I’d love an Arteon R though!
All my opinion of course
-
Like banksy I’ve had my CS since March and had no issues - honestly can’t think of a single bong. So if you can swap to a new one for minimal increase and get the new protections I’d do that but given lack of issues right now would go down the just keep option.
I kept my mk6 for 8 years, I currently never plan on selling my mk8….
While waiting for mine to arrive (almost two years) I considered a Cupra Leon estate and there is a formentor on my road….. but I would always come back to its a golf I wanted.
-
Personally I don’t like owning a performance VW sans warranty in place. Can’t see the massive benefits vs cost of an extended warranty over the All In. Perhaps it’s a brand loyalty thing to pay full price for each component included in All In Plan?
To me it seems an easy way to keep continued warranty and servicing in place for the minimum outlay, but ETTO
-
Of you are definitely replacing, the S3 is good shout. APR is ridiculous, but on PCP the GFV shot up, so monthlies aren't any worse - you're just paying more interest and less capital in your monthlies. Found it easy to get £1800 dealership discount on top of the deposit contribution. I got the normal S3 with brushed aluminium bits before black edition recently became default - as mine is black, I prefer it - black on black might look a bit drug dealer or Halfords Charva to me.
Pros - I like the leather seats, will probably not age well though. Climate and steering wheel physical buttons.
Cons - you have to pay for ACC. All the hardware is there, you can buy remotely at a later date per year or outright.
MG4 is an awfully built car, what I would call a binnable car, does not look and feel like it's made to last much longer than the very limited 7 year warranty. My neighbour has one and he agrees our Cupra Born is a much nicer car all in. I'd rather have a nice car that's brisk, than a turd of a car that's very quick. He's had his trophy 7 months, and it's been in for lumpy seats and an oil leak on the motor box already. Took a long time to get parts too.
Just paid off our mortgage and we own our cars outright
Unless range and weight on BEVs improves a lot, i'll likely get an RS3 on last opportunity to buy ICE in 2029.
-
Happy to take you out in my RS3 if you are in Wales. Very difficult to find a dealer with a demo they will let you drive. It's growing on me but I would still probably sell if I got a good offer. Had a fantastic drive up to Aberystwyth recently for my boys graduation
-
I would also keep it tbh get VW all component cover extended warranty 0 xs.
Seems md to spend all that extra on a car that will not be much if any quicker and will more than likely have worse spec, also the clubby will hold it money better than a lot of other cars and also not command the stupid 40k plus roD tax.
-
@ Lee evo1986 I can’t believe you still remember the mk6 after all this time, you must’ve seen hundreds of cars pass through since  it was a nice spec example though.
You’re correct, this Clubsport is the longest I’ve kept a car, but only just, the previous Ed40 wasn’t far behind.
@BanksyGTI, another Clubsport is off the cards, no point in buying another when it’d cost me nigh on £20k plus luxury tax. I’d rather keep mine and maybe do a few things to it. Or buy a semi-classic VW project. Or something.
You do realise you said 4WD is boring before you suggested several 4WD cars
@Kenis, I wish I had your patience and staying power! I’m a bit of a rolling stone when it comes to cars despite being the world’s most boring person in all other areas.
It’s reassuring to see you’re still bong free  it shows there’s hope.
@DSGboy the ‘all in one’ is definitely on my radar and was before the bongs started last year especially as VW were doing Black Friday deals, which if repeated this year would be perfect to coincide with the end of my factory warranty :afro:
@monkeyhanger, the S3 actually comes in a bit cheaper on the monthlies than a Golf R for the reasons you state.
I’m really not a fan of leather seats (the mk8 Golf ones are nice though) but the lack of ACC would be a plus in my book! No heated steering wheel though
The MG4 is a turd in many respects granted. But it’d be fun until the novelty wore off.
RS3? That brings me on to…
@Tractor Dave, thank you, appreciated
Maybe it’s back to plan A then and resume saving for an Audi 5 pot.
@davo245, Excellent points well made sir

Following on from your suggestion of the MG, why not a Polestar 2? It's a Volvo so good build quality, fairly good looking, 408ps, should be in the price range and has the comforts and tech you're accustom to.

Your last option seems most agreeable so can’t you simply just buy an extra year’s warranty for it or are they not doing that anymore?
-
They do
https://insurewithvolkswagen.co.uk/extended-warranty
I have extended my warranty on last 2 GTI's with them and will do same with this one if I keep it good value and very comprehensive never had any issues and cheaper than most aftermarket warranty providers quotes I always find.
-
I'm six months behind you Exonian and faced with the same decision.
I'm leaning toward extending the lease for 4 years and wasn't planning to extend the warranty. In my mind the bongs are a current known issue and VW should fix them (under warranty) now. If they can't, then it's not a new fault and I don't see why I should have to pay to fix them just because the car has gone past the 3 year mark. If you think VW won't see it that way, a 4th year VW warranty is the only option for me @ £300-£400 for that?
-
£377 for a year Extended warranty looks dear against the All In at £35 a month, imo.
-
@Will, the Polestar is a good shout. Looks better built than most EV’s and I really like the styling.
@ant, damian, davo, hopefully common sense and an extended warranty will prevail but when it comes to cars I can be a little erratic
@BillSan, my faith in VW honouring sorting the bongs sans warranty is zero.
@DSGboy, I wonder whether the warranty terms between the VWUK approved extended warranty as a standalone product as opposed to the warranty side of the All in One are any different(?)
Nearer the time I’ll read the small print (whilst hoping someone sensible such as SRGTD will beat me to it in the meantime 😁) to see where the money is best spent.

Interested in this as mine will be 3 years in May 24. Bongs have returned with a vengeance last 2 weeks . Co-incidence that this is after OTA update? Still on original steering wheel as I was told it wouldn’t help replacing it. Do I keep going back whilst under warranty?
I kept my Mark 7 GTI for 5.5 years and can’t see anything that I like better than current one.
I was registered before but couldn’t remember password etc so had to re- register.
-
I couldn’t see any glaring concerns with the All In vs the Extended. And as you say, if bought on offer it’s excellent value. Really is worth a close look, although you then use dealer servicing which won’t suit all as we know. I managed to get it at £25 per month. Still smiling. Haha.

Welcome back! Have a word with jv about your log in. There might be a workaround.
Definitely keep plaguing VW to get it sorted. It’s not acceptable. Mine has been bong free for ages but as soon as they reappear if they do I’ll be straight back to VW. It’s distracting and downright dangerous at times.

At least sticking with dealer servicing, no matter how begrudgingly at times, it always sounds good at resale time and there’s little VW can argue as far as warranty claims go.
-
@BillSan, my faith in VW honouring sorting the bongs sans warranty is zero.
If VW had any interest in genuinely resolving the bongs, they'd have done it by now.
If you can live with the bongs and want a newish performance car regardless, stick with what you've got. From things you've said, I think we are of a similar age, so my priority would be clearing the mortgage asap and for that I'd be prepared to get a cheap runaround and put as much into the mortgage as possible, especially if the interest rate is high. I'm mortgage free and have been for a few years now and I thoroughly recommend it!

Paid previous mortgages off early and ended up blowing too much on cars instead, so moved again as at least (in theory) houses appreciate… 😁

I'm absolutely sure of that too Exonian. When my lease is up the car will still be bonging away and I don't want to be held responsible for that. I'll therefore make sure my VW dealer records the fault before my 3 year warranty ends. If they can't fix it, the problem will still be theirs when I give it back after 4 years.
-
Hi Exonian,
Always enjoy your posts; makes me chuckle at times.
I would keep it sir. Cost to replace is just daft these days. Got my GTI in November 2020 too. 22000 on the clock now and apart from two months off the road waiting for a part {at least I was given a Mk8 as a replacement car} its been fine.
Would be interested to see a Mk8.5 if/when but I guess the daft price and 12 month wait will put me off.
-
I'm keeping mine.... bongs or not.
I will be asking VW what the position is on software upgrades however I suspect that some time in 2024 there simply won't be any more software upgrades....
The whole episode has totally soured my love for VW I have to say.
I'll probably keep it until a milkfloat is feasible.

My daughter has an Audi Q4 e-tron Milkfloat and it’s a pretty stunning car, still have to plan any long journey carefully to ensure range is OK though, like you, no plans to move away from the Devil’s fluid.

I agree with that Fred. I suspect the MK 8 has now become something VW want to forget. I was so excited to be getting a new edition but never again. Still love the car though .

@Exonian how's your luck with scratch cards? If it's good you could get a fancy electric golf

-
@Will, when it comes to me and luck there’s always a prefix of “bad” in front!
(I do rather like the posh Golf though and it’s even in the correct colour)
@Fred looks like there will be a few of us leaping into the unknown of a post warranty mk8 soon then
@Tony Jazz, you’re easily pleased that’s all I can say! Full rib ticklers are way beyond my level though 😁
I dread to think what the 8.5 will cost but then again if it’s on finance and VW want to shift them then they can adjust rates accordingly to make them more affordable. ID models are a prime example right now, nobody was buying them so they’re on 0% with a strong enough GFV to make them somewhat more attainable than they were not so long ago. They even have stock of the outgoing cars all of a sudden when back along attainability was less about the price and more about the waiting time for build slots.
-
Sorry to hijack the thread, I’ve dropped round for something else and I’ve not read all the posts. May have been mentioned…
If you want to keep the gold 8, especially for another 3 years, have you spoke to warranty wise? The price and level of cover they’ve offered me on my M2 is very good. £1500 for 3 years vs BMW extended at over £1k a year.
The cover level depends on age and mileage of car at the start of the warranty.
-
Thanks Exonian!
I think the ID's are on 0% because of what was a daft initial price and lets face it, if you are in the market for an EV, there are potentially better looking EV's out there?
-
Carl, VW do an All in One plan that’s pretty decent value but it’d be interesting to see how warranty wise and other third party providers compare :afro:
Hope you’re still enjoying the M2
Tony Jazz, fair point on the exterior and interior looks on the ID’s. Although there’s a facelifted ID.3 parked around the corner from me on 20” Sanya wheels that actually looks quite nice. Still horrifically overpriced though no doubt and 50bhp too slow. It’ll be interesting to see the ID.3 GTX
-
Look Here anybody considering an All In Plan.
(https://i.postimg.cc/RF3qh4GY/IMG-5972.png) (https://postimg.cc/Vr8zHyx9)
It’s great value even at full price, but a steal at 20% off, imho.

The Smart #1 Brabus edition with 400+ PS

Yes, great suggestion David, I’m sold on the idea of these but the ‘combover’ roof is a bit of an acquired taste.
Also the Volvo EX30 comes in 400+ bhp flavour at almost reasonable cost. Bit boring looking but the performance of these things makes 300bhp hot hatches look positively pedestrian.

They certainly make good arguments for themselves. The Brabus more overtly sporty looking and the Volvo under the radar.
GR Yaris
I still kick myself for not buying one of the very first run where I was offered a slot and on 0% interest too.
Alas, I had a second car then and don’t anymore and I do, albeit very rarely, need the seats and extra doors for elderly relative ferrying.
-
Yes, great suggestion David, I’m sold on the idea of these but the ‘combover’ roof is a bit of an acquired taste.
Also the Volvo EX30 comes in 400+ bhp flavour at almost reasonable cost. Bit boring looking but the performance of these things makes 300bhp hot hatches look positively pedestrian.
Described by Volvo as “our smallest ever SUV” these barges weigh 2 tons!

Those Duracell batteries sure aren’t light.
They deliver the goods on the drag strip though!

Yeah, but does it have enough charge to get to the end of the runway?!
-
Probably does use most of the charge doing a run like that!
Mind you I expect those cars lined up next to it swallowed up most of a tankful of fuel too.
All good entertainment.

Porsche Macan? Small enough, definitely powerful enough, fits 5 & a dog, great build quality, lovely interior, good residuals, still drive great for an suv.
Megane RS? Better looking than a golf, drives better than a golf, only downside is it's French and the interior.
-
The Macan is a good suggestion, I’ve seen a few interesting looking examples zipping about full of hooray Henries on weekend jaunts down to Cornwall. The running costs would probably make my eyes water after a lifetime of econo-hatches.
The Megane I have huge respect for but it’s really not my cup of tea. I’d actually rather have the MG!!
It’s a bit hardcore for an old softie like me.
I was talking to a colleague on Monday whose other half has an Ibiza and wanted a Leon, he’s previously had a Leon FR and before that a Civic Type R.
I told her that Cupra were doing 0% finance so she immediately messaged him.
Fast forward less than 24 hours and I get told he’d been straight down to the dealership on Tuesday morning and stuck a deposit on a Leon VZ2 245PS.
They’re quite a compelling purchase with a great spec and well under the £40k tax in most guises. I could be sold on a 300PS one on 0%. “Could” but won’t be I’d imagine! But I’d buy one of those over another Clubsport at £42k or whatever they are now.
His son remarked to me that he preferred my Clubsport when I saw him in passing earlier. It’s an age thing maybe.

Yeah, the straight line performance equals a supercar but I wonder if the handling can match just a 122PS TSI MK7?

I would say no to the Cupra, its a basically a Golf GTE with hybrid power https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-reviews/cupra/leon-hybrid/
Petrol only or full electric please!

There is a full petrol version too, in 245ps or 300ps.
-
It’s the petrol 245PS car my colleague went for and it would be the 300PS petrol that would interest me.
Only 340mm brakes on the 300 I think, similar to the S3 which is a shame. The 245 has the same 340mm brakes as far as I can tell.

Yeah both have 340's at the front and 310's at the rear.

Perfectly fine for normal road use but I do like the bigger drilled discs on the Clubby
