Whilst persusing the UK's VW website yesterday, I noticed that only the Golf Life and Golf Style were now listed on the Golf 8 Model range page. This made me wonder if this was just a mid-website update in progress or whether the order list was that long that other models had now been pulled from the VW UK's order books too, not just the Clubsport.
Curious as to whether there was anything on VW's news and communications site on this I thought I'd take a look. Whilst I couldn't find anything on the missing Golfs. I did find a press release from two days ago (28th October 2022) titled "Volkswagen Passenger Cars stays on track in difficult environment". One section gave a few more details on VW's high order backlog.
"High order backlog continues
The nine-monthly result was bolstered, among other things, by positive developments in delivery figures in the third quarter that showed further stabilization despite the bottlenecks in the supplier industry. At 1.26 million, the number of vehicles delivered between July and September 2022 was 15.3 percent higher than the same prior-year period – with deliveries in September particularly strong (+19 percent). As a result, the Volkswagen brand delivered 3.3 million vehicles worldwide in the first nine months of the year, of which 207,200 were all-electric ID. models (+23.5 percent).
The front runners were the ID.4 and the ID.5, with deliveries totaling 122,600 units. In China, 104,700 ID. models (ID.3, ID.4 and ID.6) were delivered in the first nine months, more than double the figure for the same prior-year period.
The Volkswagen brand’s order backlog remains very high, standing at 700,000 vehicles across all drive types for Europe alone. Volkswagen is working hard on further reducing delivery times for customers and processing the large backlog of orders as quickly as possible."
So whilst it doesn't help reduce the frustration of the delivery times. It's the first time I've personally seen an actual figure stated for the amount of vehicles on backorder (albeit just European orders); gives some scale of the issue. Interesting that the company's electric vehicle deliveries are mentioned in the release, but nothing on traditional ICE. This probably fits with previous discussions on this forum about whether VW are prioritising EV orders in order to not be hit with excessive carbon fines.

Just saw the same thing. I’m 18 months in a 3 year lease on my GTI and was looking to see if I could bring myself to order another one. Given the build/delivery problems I thought I’d give myself plenty of time.
But just the standard golfs available.

You can no longer order a manual GTI they have been permanently removed from the line. I ordered my manual Gti Sept 2021, last news i received was that it had been removed from build scheduling.

GTIs back online

I managed to secure an existing slot for March 2023 back in June this year for similar spec to you (white manual, Adelaide’s. Camera, full winter (front and back) and spare wheel).
Apparently mine still showing first quarter build (not locked in) but I asked dealer about the manual deletion and they said any in the system would be honoured/built. Not sure if this is BS!
Who knows what will happen though especially if you ordered so long ago and still waiting!
Did your dealer say same about honouring builds for man?
-
The last build date I had was Wk 16 next year. But now back to no confirmed build date. I was told that my order would be honoured. Here's hoping!!
-
Emailed my dealer to check and have been told mine has been removed from planned build in March now.
No update on when build will be scheduled.
Doesn’t bode well dont imagine it will be coming forward!!
-
I asked if there was any chance of my order getting moved forward. They said they had no idea what the factory was up to.
-
I’m assuming they had no clue when they would even know?
Mine said they will ‘periodically’ check whatever that means!!

When I had my car serviced recently, I had an ‘all things VW’ chat with the salesperson I dealt with when I bought the car. When we got onto talking about excessively long lead times for performance Golfs, they said the backlog at the Wolfsburg plant was ‘massive’ and intimated it was a real mess that would take a significant length of time to clear.
Not good for anyone waiting for their car to be built……..

It’ll just take China to have a pop at Taiwan and the chip supply will dry up somewhat more!
Just imagine next year’s mk8 special edition “1983” chip free model.
You want aircon - you wind a window down
You want to wind a window down - you crank it with a handle
You need internal mirror adjustment - you toggle a knob connected to a cable
You want ABS brakes - you get a printout tutorial on cadence braking
You want power steering - you get a mechanical pulley system driven off the crank
You want a trick front diff - you order a Quaiffe from DemonTweeks and get your mate Dave who owns a lock up garage to fit it, cash in hand
Oh, and in celebration to 1983 - just one years warranty as that’s all we had back then!
CarPlay? Pah!! Not a chance, not even a screen fitted.
Haptics? No steering wheel features at all.

Pretty much describes my OH's Lupo perfectly! Strange as it drives just fine and has been incredibly reliable over it's 20 years with us...

Ordered my GTI September 2021. Been given a new build date of WK 47 (20th Nov). Unbelievable

Just imagine the EU allowing something with no current spec (electronic) safety systems to be sold...

Is it all Golf variations that have crystal ball wait times or are some versions easier to get hold of than others does anyone know?
The Clubsport thread here shows how bad that model is for estimated build weeks, Stretts, you’re showing the regular GTI is just as bad still. Does anyone follow the R forum to see how that model fares?
Trev if you’re around, do you have a date for your 20 Years Edition? I did see in the blurb that the spec was to be built alongside regular R’s and won’t queue jump.

There are forum members over on golfmk8.com who are experiencing (or have experienced) similar wait times for a mk8 Golf R Line compared to the wait times for a performance Golf. Over on VWROC.com, some forum members have been waiting around two years for a mk8 R. The Hartman Kardon audio upgrade seems to be a common theme where there are excessively long wait times - suggests that maybe HK have semiconductor supply issues.
It’s not just VW and the Golf - similar wait times being reported by forum members for the Seat Leon, Cupra Leon and Cupra Formentor over on seatcupra.net forum.
And I thought an eight month wait for my mk6 GTD back in 2011 was bad .

No date for my R20 yet. I also still have an 8R on order from November 2021 and that has no build week either. On the R forum some members cars are just arriving this week, 2 years after ordering!

I quite like the sound of that car

That’s just plain greedy Trev!
Thanks for the info though and it’s interesting to see the cars are eventually arriving and the orders not just falling into a black hole.

Won't be keeping both! Probably won't be keeping either if they don't sort out the software problems.

There’s always hope!
New ID.3 released very very soon so it’ll be interesting if they’ve sorted the gremlins on that and maybe they’ll filter through the range.
I did say “maybe”…
