Title: CS Still quite rare
Post by: Acegadget on 03 August 2021, 09:21
Was discussing last night that due to the shortage the Clubsport is still quite a rare sight?

I dont think I have actually seen another CS on the road yet round me in Oxfordshire. I have seen a gorgeous Black R and a GTD but no GTi's not even a non CS

I’ve only seen one CS, two Rs and 3 Gti’s and one of those was my brothers! Very rare indeed.

Apart from the demonstrator I drove, I have seen 2 x GTIs (KR, AB), 1 x GTD (Silver) and 1 x R (Blue). I haven't seen that many standard Mk 8 Golfs either.

Performance Mk8's are rare still.... pretty much there was the initial dealer stock and thats it. That's covid/semiconductor shortage for you!

I've seen about 3 other GTI/CS/R's so far.

I have seen two ClubSports - one white and one blue.  I potentially saw a third in silver but only caught a glimpse and wasn't sure.

I have seen three Rs.  A black one passed me going the opposite direction on the way to work.  Then I saw two together.  One had been pulled over by the police just outside a busy town centre late on a Saturday night and the other was parked up, engine running, about 20 yards in front of the unlucky chap - presumably his mate.  I am yet to see one launch up a McDonald's car park, but I don't doubt it's just a matter of time...

Seen quite a few GTIs.

Still getting lots of looks and compliments in mine.  Pulled up at a set of lights and a young lad in a Fiesta next to me motioned to me to wind down my window and told me it was a "Badman car" and that he wanted it.  I also had a brief bit of duel-carriageway fun with a 7.5 R and the driver gave me a big thumbs-up out of his window as he pulled off onto the slip-road.

I’ve seen Gti’s on a daily basis several R’s but no club sports.

I also saw an unmarked police R a couple of weeks ago on the A1 going north past Darlington.

But I do spend all day 5 days a week on the motorway driving.

I’ve seen one other Clubsport on the road.
I’ve seen one R on the road but it was literally around the corner from a big VW dealership so might have been on test drive as it was launch spec (standard wheels but had a sunroof).
I’ve also seen a handful of GTI’s but more surprisingly given the demonisation of Diesel is that I've seen a few more GTD’s than either. I thought company car drivers were all in either petrols or Teslas these days, obviously not the case.

I’ve seen very few mk8’s in general but I’m not surprised really. In standard form it’s an ugly car with lots of unhappy angles and styling (to achieve the aero figures?)
I see far more ID’s around and I suppose that reflects the blanket marketing of electric cars from all marques and general brainwashing going on over the last few years. If faced with a choice of non Performance Golf or ID then my choice wouldn’t be the Golf either.

I see more Polestar 2's than performance golfs here... I probably should have bought one too...

Performance Golf's starting to appear now on local roads. Seen a few GTi's and GTD's, even a GTE. But still no R's or Clubsports.

I've seen a grand total of 1 GTI, 2 R's and one GTD. No CS so far.

Per chance do you live near many architects?

Still a rare site over here as well, I've seen 2 Clubsports, 3 R's, 1 GTI, 1 GTD. Is there another deal on the R again where every man and his dog will have one?

Nah the R thing is just down to those drag race times... Certainly not cheap!

Through fleet deals at the minute the GTD is £300 a month and with what happened with the mk7 R I'd be very hesitant to go for an R this early.

I do believe the Clubsport is the cream of the Mk8's until the Edition 50 comes around which I've very high hopes for.

Maybe VW will do an Anni R in the next year or two with some trick front suspension settings to give it CS handling and R traction. Stranger things have happened.

I've had my 7.5 TCR a year and still haven't seen another one on the road. Yesterday though I saw four mk8 Gtis and two mk8 Clubsports within 2 hours. Bog standard Gtis still look terrible, Clubsport looks ok though (both were white that I saw).

On a trip up to Newcastle last week I parked next to a Blue MK8 R and then a few days later I returned to my car on a trip to the metrocentre and a white MK8 R had parked next to mine. I had time to look at the MK8 and was not that impressed with the rear bumper fit (perhaps it had been hit) but the bonnet to front wing fit was also way off. The only two Rs I have seen.

Still prefer the look of my ED40

Seen several GTIs but no Clubsports

The question is what could they do? I'm sure it'd be for the 25th Anniversary of it (It did start at the mk4 didn't it?) Seeing how the golf now has the aluminium subframe of the Audi A3 and is already pushing too much up on the S3.

Of realistic things I'd expect from one it would be a mild hybrid drivetrain (at a push) with bigger lighter brakes with a few graphics and a mild bodykit.

One last hurrah of a VR6 would be nice though, even if it was still at 320bhp.

Reply : I saw a black R on the A1 near Darlington tonight as I traveled N. It overtook me then sat there for a couple of miles then turned off. I wonder if it was the unmarked  police car???

I've had my Clubsport for about 6 weeks.  Still not seen another. I have seen 2 or 3 new R's in that time, but overall I'd say Mk8 Golfs are quite rare as a whole for now.

The same is probably true of any recently launched new model as the semiconductor shortages and Covid will mean fewer cars are currently being built, although as you’ve got a CS, the natural tendency will be to look for other CS on the road.

Saw my first Clubsport on the road outside of a VW dealership. It was black and coming the opposite way. Very difficult to tell apart from a normal MK8 GTI head on as the black colour hides the different shape on the lower bumper. From the rear its noticeable because of the diffuser/ exhaust setup and of course that spoiler. In any other colour I'm sure its more noticeable on the road.
