I am looking at replacing the Kumho tyres on our mapped GTi and want some that will get grip on the front a little better, obvs I know its hard all the power through the front wheels but I am sure we can gain some more grip though better tyres, I know most people love the Michelin PS4 but they are just too expensive in 19", so its come down between Pirelli P-Zero's or Goodyear Eagle F1's Asymmetric 5's, does anyone have experience of these on a mapped GTi please?
-
I would avoid the P-Zeros, the latest ones do seem to grip a bit better than the ones I had before but even in slightly damp conditions they would have the TC light on or tramp. The PS4S were much better.

Cheers for the reply, I am thinking the F1's might be the way forward for me :nerd:
-
The F1's seem to be quite highly rated by Tyre Reviews. These are 18's tested here, but I can't imagine it making a huge difference TBH

Thanks yes agreed
-
The F1's are a very good tyre, I have just had a set fitted, however do not expect miracles as it is still easy to break traction with them fitted on my GTD (hopefully the diff on the GTI will reduce that a lot)
-
Have a look at Hankook tyres as well - excellent performance IMO.

What is the rim protection like?
-
Not too bad, better than the PS4's and Bridgestones, not infallible though still have to be really careful. (Running Seville 18's) Had to get the wheels powder coated due to scuffs and white-worm (there are a number of us with a pathological hate for Diamond cut wheels)
-
New mk8 on nineteens comes with Hankook Ventus S1evo3. Might be worth looking at those.

Yeah, been on various ‘s’ Audi’s for a while now. Had them on a previous golf as well and they were excellent.

But its all about rim protection too, any ideas if they have a good amount?
-
Eagle F1 Asy 5. Good rim protection and a great all round tyre, especially in the wet. And my GTi is stage 1 map 300bhp

Thank you, any pics of the rim protection by any chance?

Get 4 Michelin PS4S and be done with it.
These things are fitted as standard to the A45S and GR Yaris Circuit Pack amongst other very notable cars.
Michelin always have some sort of offer on bringing the cost of the 4S down to GYE F1 levels.
And yes, 4 tyres not 2.
Sell the Kunhos on eBay or if you have a friend who owns an oil tanker donate them to that so they can be hung on the port side where they’ll do their best work.
I used to be the worlds biggest sceptic about certain performance tyres and the hype surrounding them. Then I bought a set of PS4S for my Clubsport and happily ate my words.

When it come to getting new tyres on my GTi I'm torn between either the Eagle F1 Asy 5's or PS4's. I do very little miles each year but feel like I need something better
I'm not sure what tyres I have on the rear off the top of my head, but when I bought the car it needed new ones on the front. The garage put "CatchForce" tyres on the front 225/40ZR18. I don't have a clue what they are? Don't know if anyone knows?
They're not half bad but they do lose grip quite easily if I put my foot down in the wet or even just damp conditions
My first car over 200bhp so I need to start learning this stuff about tyres I think

Bearing in mind the UK roads are at the very least damp 99.8% of the time it’s wise to get decent rubber that can handle the spiralling power outputs of modern hot hatches.
Most things will do on a 1.2 litre Vauxhall Mocha but a GTI or R deserves something able to transmit the power and chassis development onto damp tarmac. With high powered cars the tyres can make an awful lot of difference.
-
Same with us, we only do around 3000 miles per year and the Michelins are just too expensive as im having my alloys painted too, actually saying that Michelin have £75 off 4 tyres right now which makes them the same price as the F1's as you said

They’re probably Windforce Catchfors - Chinese tyres.

You can see the rim protection on this pic.

I got mine from Black Circles and had them fitted when the wheels were done... saved a bunch
-
I’m really pleased with the Pilot Sport 4S, especially in the wet and greasy conditions we have at the moment. The Pirelli P Zeros had a lot of tramping in the wet and cold. It’s also worth noting that I got 18,000 miles out of my last set of PS4S’s which is over 5000 miles more than I’ve had on any tyre before. That more than offsets the extra cost.
In the dry and warm they are simply outstanding!

The S2's it seems had an amazing amount of rim protection. Maybe worth going to see if you can look at a set of S3's?

Ive just bought 4 x Michelin PS4S, got them from Camskill cost £468 after £75 discount for buying 4 so they ended up being £3 more than F1's, happy with that
-
Well those are the tyres your car deserves. Thats a pretty good price tbh for 19's of any sort.

That was very good, I paid over £700 for mine on my last car in 2017. I was very impressed with them even at the price I paid.
-
Yep not bad
Any ideas what 4 x Kumho Ecsta Le Sport KU39 235-35-19 approx 6mm tread worth second hand?

Good work. You won’t regret that.
The PS4S are well proven and you know exactly what you’re getting.
The Kumhos will sell easily enough on local gumtree or Facebook marketplace I reckon.

Can anyone with experience of both comment on whether the PS4Ss are much different to the PS4s? Not long since had these fitted on 18” wheels, but looks like PS4Ss will be available in18s
-
This should tell you everything you need to know: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMv64liOqIE
I've been generally very impressed with the PS4, but am hoping we get the 4S in 18" too, as next time ideally I'd like more steering feel. Wondering if the Goodyear may be a better option for me. Or Conti.
-
Thanks, that’s an interesting video. Seems there’s nothing in it in terms of grip but more steering feel with the 4Ss

Yep! That's the ones I have. Found another picture on my phone (because I didn't want to go out in the cold and look lol) and it says Windforce on the other side.
I mean, they have decent ratings printed on the tyre. But I still haven't left a review for the garage and not sure if I should put that down as a negative. From what I can see it wouldn't have been much more for a better brand and you expect that when you're spending over £10k on a car really

4S tyres turned up today (well 3 as one missing) and I am surprised at how light they are, im sure my Kumho weighed a tonne lifting them around :nerd:
-
Its lighter because you only have three quarters of them

One missing not three
Honestly holding one they feel very light compared

Getting my wife's alloys refurbed Gloss Black this Thursday and new Michelin PS4S fitted, I will post up some pics on Friday when we collect the car
-
I said I would post up for anyone thinking of doing the same, what can I say, looks great but also the Michelin's are superb, the ride is so much better now

The PS4S will be available in 18" soon too 👍
-
Another convert to the theory that all tyres are not equal, even in road going summer ones?
-
The wheels look really good in gloss black jaceyboy and I like that the tyre fitter appears to have lined up the Michelin logos nicely with the spokes/valve going by the wheel only shot :afro:
-
Yep very happy with the job, the guy really was good at attention to detail
-
TBH bro I think the Nangkang NS2r's are the best for putting the power down. I had a 350bhp fiesta ST and all I did mod wise for traction was a rear engine mount and the Nangkangs and I was pulling 4.4 0-60 on British roads when dry and it felt like it had a LSD when cornering. It was absolutely crazy! I wonder what it would have been like with an LSD.
However, they are cheap and do last longer than you think, but they have very hard tyre walls so it does compromise the ride a bit, but nothing crazy, still dailyed the car.
-
Not compromising the ride on a Fiesta ST leaves it very open to interpretation when we consider what the factory ride is like to start with!
Good to hear you were happy with your NS2’s though
