Nice one!

Thanks King Monkey for spotting that.  At least we know a timeline for it.

Will be good to finally see it and end some (hopefully all) of the rumours

Roll on 4th November

I'll be very interested to see where the R sits price wise between the GTI and TCR. If it's near as damn it £40k without options then it's gonna have to be very, very good.

While we're on the R, do we know what bhp it will have? Gotta be more the TCR. Maybe 316-336bhp (ish)? Same as the new Arteon R?

And... will it be coming back as an estate?

Now that’s the million dollar question!

The S3 and Cupra Fermentor thingy are 310 PS
The Arteon 320.
Those ‘leaked’ screen grabs showed around 330 PS.
The T-Roc has the 300 PS still so could potentially get a 10 PS lift and a mini facelift using the new R logo next year. Can’t see that being allowed any more than that.

Will VW get the nod to use the 320 and have the Golf outgun the S3?
Will the S3 Vorsprung get the 320 to justify the hinted at huge price jump over the shiny trim S3?

Politics!

Those screen shots have been very accurate so far so 330bhp seems odds on to me.

Any clues on torque? I guess they'll only be able to rinse out 410Nm, 420Nm at a push?
Title: Re: Golf R Reveal
Post by: AndyGTI on 17 October 2020, 08:32
As Exonian has said

S3 is 310ps
Arteon and Tiguan have 320ps

I think I have read that that the EA888 engine in Arteon and Tiguan are (Evo4) and the S3 is last generation.

They say the engine in Arteon and Tiguan is 320ps (316bhp) and 420Nm (310 lbs ft)

So we wait for all to be revealed for the Golf R.

It would seem to suggest that Golf R will be more powerful than an S3....but that would go against the usual VAG model hierarchy.  Also the leaked slide on models (which has thus far been correct) it stated a Golf R with 335ps (330bhp).

I just wonder if we are going to have a standard Golf R model with 310ps (matching S3), but with a performance pack option with 335ps.  So price wise, they have something to come in at similar price to S3, but then take some middle-ish ground between S3 & RS3 with a Performance Pack version in low £40ks price point.

I also wonder whether the cold hard light of day and EU fines on emissions, all this talk about a 380-400ps version is dead in the water and the 335ps version is the highest output for a Golf that they will do.

R and R Performance eh....

More ways of taking more of your money....

What do you reckon, 39,995 for the R with zero options and north of 40k for the R Performance.

R Performance has the drift mode... which of course everyone will leave permanently switched on.

To be honest I think the R will be over £40k even as a ‘basic’ version. Sign of the times.

Absolutely. The wheels look like those from the T-Rocc or Tiguan R. Can never remember which.

I'm expecting those alloys to be optional. Think we've also seen them on the Arteon R. We've already seen what will probably be the standard wheels and they weren't well received. Meanwhile the countdown has started...

I think the one in that Twitter video is the R-Performance....

Which might explain the different wheels, definitely explains the Akra zorst...

Hope you've got some pennies saved.... this is going to be the most expensive non-special edition Golf ever made...

Wow, things have certainly ramped up today.  I am going to take today’s reveal as a win. I thought there might be two versions.(as per my post 17 Oct)

Price wise I think they will still want to keep R close to S3 so I’m thinking around £38.5/39k but goodness knows about the Performance version. What’s included will surely set the price. I suppose anywhere between £3 to £5k on top.

I think the wheels which were shown with Arteon R and Tiguan R will be the new option wheel. I quite like them. Yes, if the others (that look like Bergamos) are the standard then I think there will be plenty of upgrades

Based on price comparison between the GTI DSG price here and in Germany, I reckon the Clubsport will be around £37.5 K.

so:
GTD 31k
GTI 32k
GTI DSG 34k
GTE 36k
Clubby 38k
R 39k
R Perf 43k

That looks about right.... and each £2000 extra is about 75 quid a month difference on PCP...

To use the classic line: "Speed is a question of money...how fast can you afford to go?"
Title: Re: Golf R Reveal

To use the classic line: "Speed is a question of money...how fast can you afford to go?"

That is very true...... certainly owning an R this time around is going to be an expensive proposition. If the GTI  is coming out at £420 to £591 on PCP then £75 per £2000 of list price would really push the monthly for the R through the roof   :undecided:
Title: Re: Golf R Reveal
Post by: AndyGTI on 30 October 2020, 18:26
I know there are plenty of people that do track days (I’m too scaredy-cat) so the drift mode will probably appeal to them as well as Chris Harris and Tiff Needell.

As has been said this has no place on the road unless you are a muppet. So the general appeal will be brakes, rear spoiler and power upgrade I suspect on the performance model.

I know we are giving VW a hard time, but at least we can spec the cars we actually want as opposed to other makes where you need to add a pack or an atrociously priced trim level.

Suspect there will be a lot of talk about the VED additional sum once the configurator goes live.

I see on the VW press release it says presales start on Thursday 5th Nov in Germany and Europe, do you reckon early December before UK price is announced?

So I’ve just been reading the press releases for GTI, GTI Clubsport and R.

In each of the GTI press releases it talks about the new vehicle dynamics manager and how this and that works great esp with optional adaptive dampers.

Well read the R press release.....it’s all wonderful with Vehicle dynamics manager and the adaptive dampers ( note the word optional isn’t there)

So I am right to get you all excited and call it... new Golf R gets adaptive dampers as standard?

Would like to know if anyone else reads that assumption as well based on the press releases. I’ve included them below

As we've seen with the gti, the truth is in the actual brochure, whenever that gets put out by vw uk. That's far more telling than even the UK configurator.

Yes we will need to wait and see, but in fairness VWUK are only re-issuing the VW main website press releases in these cases that’s why I’m thinking it looks hopeful (ok it’s wishful thinking)

I’m sure that someone with better engine knowledge will confirm if they see this as a good thing

Ahh! I was reading the R Forum but zoned out when they started talking estates. Maybe that is the plan. My idea about two different R hatch versions has its flaws ( like close proximity to each other). It would make for clearer distinction between models (hatch and estate) and make clear that an R hatch was top dog.

No, not at the end of this clip. But since then I’ve seen two R related adverts.

1 was another teaser for Golf R reveal on 4th of Nov but this one featured Arteon R being driven somewhere rather than T-Roc R in the earlier Teaser.

Then I saw an advert for R Division saying we are great and looking after planet with future electric performance and Tanner Foust seemed to be in it and a shot of the Golf R.

I still reckon there is a R-Performance version with just enough extra power plus Akra exhaust, different wheels and maybe some different seats and some stickers....to tempt you to spend a few grand more on it.

And we all know there will be plenty who won't be able to stop themselves from having the "ultimate R"...

Its almost like VW understand their customer base

Additionally it could also be a way of having a R for list price under 40k for those who refuse to pay the bandit tax.

Andrew had had a few issues with the R down the years which has led to him not being a fan and then continually saying in videos that he doesn’t like it. Which I totally understand. I did chuckle when he started his series of ‘Why the INSERT CAR NAME is better than the R’ videos though.

From the voice over on the YT world premier it sounded like the large spoiler and titanium exhaust are part of a performance pack. So my hunch is the billy basic R will have a normal, small willy spoiler

Its it just me or does the R not have the same condensor damaging large holed honeycomb grill?

Those diaganol pieces on the front end do as we expected improve the "wide mouthed frog" look of the GTI.

Its still relying heavily on the "best two angles" in the shots we have seen, plus 19's... and the optional "big willy spoiler"

I wonder if the side skirts are also part of the "performance pack" too..

That’s what they reminded me of when I first saw them. I wonder if those wheels on the R are manufactured by BBS for VW? They’ve made other OEM wheels for VW before.

Rear three quarter makes me not hate it but the drift mode feels like pandering for those Autocar et al tests where they put the GTI up against a Ford and the Ford always wins.

Drift mode isn’t anything I’d ever use or even try out - presumably intended for track use only?

I can remember reading of a Focus RS owner in the USA allegedly with drift mode engaged on the public roads and it didn’t end well.

Edit; just found it (YouTube video at the end of the item);

I think it has some good features but I hate this trend with showing the vehicle all blinded but up. It’ll be good to see the standard car and not the R performance pack with Akra exhaust.

So what do we reckon: R performance pack at £3-3,500. And same again with Exhaust.

Standard car needs to be priced in line with competition or else they are going to miss out on sales.

It does look the best version of any MK8 available so far, but still has a long way to go to equal mk7.

So they matched the power with Arteon and Tiguan.....so the famous leaked slide was finally wrong about 333ps.

Not sure what else they have in store but certainly no outright denials about anything faster. (I couldn’t afford it anyway)

Ouch!!

Not a good idea, it does seem almost like they include a drift mode to keep car reviewers happy when it doesn’t have any useful purpose for majority of drivers.

It's by far the best looking Mk8 and the first time, to my eyes at least, that the R has been styled as more overtly "hot" / "sporty" / "aggressive" than the GTI.

I can't help but wonder if this signals the beginning of the end for the GTI designation.  An ID3-R would work as the performance model whereas an ID3-GTI sounds a bit daft (notwithstanding the Taycan Turbo obvs...).

Just been looking at the configurator. Well the standard wheels do seem to be a variation on Bergamo wheel.

Colours - as someone else mentioned here or on VWROC there are only 3 colours to choose from Lapiz, Black & White. Really is that right????

In Germany looks like you can choose several different wheel designs, wonder if UK will have that choice

Price is 48,000 Euros and I seem to remember the Audi S3 in Germany starting at this level which Audi UK have S3 at £37,900 so on basic (very basic) conversion maybe UK price around £38,000

Just relooked and basic S3 saloon is 47,169 Euros and in UK price is £38,465. So maybe higher end of £38k
Caveat: I appreciate that you can’t do a direct conversion due to different spec levels it’s just a rough conversion

why does it look like a BMW??

There is something about the proportions of both the Mk8 and the 1 series that make it look a bit SUV like.

I think its to do with the dropped nose making the roof height look higher.

In this particular photo it does look very X5.... probably not helped by the "big willy wing".

Higher waistline and narrower windows don’t help the proportions either. IMO the mk7 / mk7.5 was a much more cohesive design that worked better.

It does look a lot better than the GTI but then at 11k Euros more without options, it bloody well should look a lot better!!

I remember seeing a near £50k RRP fully loaded Mk7.5 R on Autotrader not so long ago so there will be plenty of well spec'd ones hitting £50k and probably over. What a world we live in.

Sure someone mentioned there will be a manual version a few pages earlier but read the evo article today which said:

There will be no manual transmission available, Volkswagen says there’s just no interest for it among Golf R buyers, but to compensate VW has fettled the seven-speed dual-clutch box, focusing on reducing shift speeds and improving response via the new, larger shift paddles.

Could be a cheap mod for the Mk7/7.5 guys. Also the rear lower and upper arms. Would be really interested to see.

Morning,

Courtesy of an Irish member over on VWROC, there is the following attachment on the Irish VW site covering the performance Golfs

https://www.volkswagen.ie/idhub/content/dam/onehub_pkw/importers/ie/models/product-guides/2020/2020-11-18/201116_GOLFGTX_MY21.pdf (https://www.volkswagen.ie/idhub/content/dam/onehub_pkw/importers/ie/models/product-guides/2020/2020-11-18/201116_GOLFGTX_MY21.pdf)

There are a lot of TBC against a lot of the R options but as it covers the full range of performance golf , hopefully it will be of some interest.

I’m not sure if we can draw any pricing conclusions from the pricelist but front cover does state “effective 1/1/2021 so possibly a while still to wait as well for us in UK

If the on the road price of the Golf R is to be believed from the PDF on the above link, the 65345 euros (on the road price) converts approximately in to £55638.  If the new Golf R in the UK is anywhere near that price, it would be insane.

You cannot compare Irish prices to what you guys pay in the UK. We are crucified with taxes here, new cars are effectively double-taxed, a vehicle registration tax is applied on top of the car + VAT total.

For some context, for example, the new BMW 128 ti is about 34k in the UK. It’s a shade under 50k euro here.
Title: Re: Golf R Reveal

That will be including their first year registration tax won't it?

It’s VRT - vehicle registration tax. Nothing to do with road tax. It’s quite penal. It’s applied on top of the VAT. In the case of the R, it’s 31%, applied on top again of the pretax price + VAT.

The pre tax (VAT and VRT) of the R is about €38K. So you could do a rough estimate of the eventual UK price off that.

For those of you excited for the Mk8 R, let's hope it doesn't sound just like the new S3... Go to 1:55 for the soundcheck.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ou6sfaPS1jk

I mean, the S3 used to sound pretty good stock and that is, quite frankly, absolutely abysmal for a 300+ bhp hot hatch. Think the Akra exhaust is going to be a must-have option for the Mk8 R. Non of the others sound any good either.

Maybe he was referring to £30k on a used R.

I thought he meant the clubby lol. More like 25% on the R...

Looking at similarly priced second hand 135's they aren't that low after a year and they were initially cheaper than the R is now too.

The word clubby is much underused. Thank you Fred.

So the Golf R is now the premium cousin of the S3. How did that happen?

Under 30k? In your dreams... 22% discount?!

GTi already under £30k

I really hope that’s a typo.

This thread is about the price of the R, you’ve a DTD quote for the gti there.

Come back when you find an R for under 30k, like you said was possible.

Autocar review of the R.

Quite a glowing review all things considered.

I’m sure the drift mode will excite the YouTube reviewers giving the car a lot of airing
I guess VW have answered all the “dull to drive unless going flat out” criticisms of the outgoing car.

Still dislike the all touch interior and the narrowed front lights still need adjusting to, but the lower front grille is much improved over the GTI, and the rear spoiler and the seats are actually desirable, and not sure if they the optional 19" but the wheels are on the like list also.

If had to choose a MK 8 it would definitely be the R at this time till facelift is there for review on the GTI. But the R is for me the winner in the looks stakes over its GTI cousin.

The Akrapovic does give the rear end some additional sport presence so be good to see what the standard pipes look like as even though have the Akrapovic myself definitely would not option it as what you get against the ££ still does not stack up for me.

You can probably just buy some third party titananium exhaust tips that would look more sexy for a fraction of £3k and it would not maybe push it into the 40k tax limit ;-)

The Akra system option gives zero extra power and with EU noise regulations probably also makes no difference to the audible note either.

If the Akrapovich is a bigger exhaust then it will give small power gains but VW won't advertise it as such. It'll also sound better too.

When you make a good living doing drag races and hooning around doing donuts it’s easy to see why you’d prefer 4wd with drift mode!
But if you take cost out of it he has a point on the title headline alone.

The exhaust sounds great. And a Nurburgring mode would be perfect for the roads near me.

The Ring Mode sounds really good tbh... however its part of the "performance pack" which not only takes the car into bandit tax territory but also adds 19's which is counter to any idea of it actually performing.

There isn't a way of having "performance pack" without it being into the 40k tax territory.

Probably better to choose a colour and DCC than the pack.

As its simply a software mod though, wouldn't it have been smarter to allow that to be purchased OTA? That would fix that problem... hellow VW its 2021 and you've not mastered "digital" even on your "new all digital Golf"

And Car Mag's writeup is here: https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-reviews/volkswagen/golf-r/

Bit of my price range at the moment! Got the 330e until June 2022 so that will be time to consider some options.

Can anyone suggest where’s best to look for deals on a new R?

I was in touch with a salesman who was from VW in Derby (I think) the other year before I decided to get something different. He was on Instagram but I can’t find his details anywhere now and I’m looking to price up an R.

It may have been Joe Knight; used to work at TL Darby VW, Burton on Trent and is now at Johnson’s VW, Tamworth.
