Title: Map updates with Chrome?
Post by: golf nutter on 17 April 2020, 17:07
I discarded a windows device some time ago and only have a Chromebook.  I want to download the latest map updates for my Discover Pro but being a Linux based system I cannot run Windows software.  VW only offers downloads of the DiscoverCare software to manage the map download.  Anyone else been in this situation or got a workaround for me please?  thanks.

You can just download the file and unzip the maps to a USB stick or memory card - you don't need discovery care.

ok thanks...that's what i am doing.  cant believe it can take 4 hours to install according to vw's blurb.  is that the experience others have had?

Unzipping the file is what takes the time.

Depends on the speed of your memory device you are using to upload it to the car.

seems to be pretty consistent no matter what speed card you use. Downloading is speed dependant and I suppose unzipping could be too.

so i downloaded the update from https://webspecial.volkswagen.de/vwinfotainment/int/en/index/downloads#/ (https://webspecial.volkswagen.de/vwinfotainment/int/en/index/downloads#/) and put it on a 128GB SD card.  Popped it into SD1 in the glovebox, went to Nav, version and then Update and it couldn't find the file.

Do i unzip it on my laptop and then put that file on the SD and do what i did above?  thanks.

You need to unzip the file to the SD Card to allow the car to see the update, there is a PDF with details on link below:
https://webspecial.volkswagen.de/vwinfotainment/dam/jcr:87a72c9d-8349-4d2b-bb04-79efdb7c14eb/Discover%20Media%20MIB%20Gen.2%20June_2019_EN.pdf
Cheers hope it works as I will be doing the same thing later, admittedly from a windows machine

Have you downloaded 7zip (it's free) to unzip it? It shouldn't be unzipping to another zip file.

I have just used 7zip as suggested and unzipped my file which is c.14Gb (Bundle 1) admittedly to my PC just to see that it worked so not really sure what is going on with your Chromebook

Are you able to post screenshots?. Just to make sure everything in the folders looks correct

chromebooks are bloody awkward things to use when it comes to anything more than surfing.

Sorry, struggling to paste a screen shot (unlike your chromebook)

looking at your screenshot there does not appear to be a data file there?

This is my downloaded file: DiscoverMedia2_EU_AS_1430_V12.7z which is c. 14Gb in size.

When I unzipped it, it only had one folder: Maps in the top level directory.

Not sure if this help....

I don't use ChromeBooks so sorry if I've got anything wrong  can see you've downloaded the file 5+ times haha.

1. Grab one of the P184(...etc).ZIP files you've downloaded
2. Copy
3. Open your SD card/USB stick location
4. Paste
5. Right click on the folder
6. Press 'Extract here' (thats what you need 7Zip or WinRAR for)
7. Once it's done extracting the files delete the .ZIP folder

Hope that helps somehow

Thank you guys...user error.  Think I may have got it downloaded and unzipped as I write this.  Will try the install shortly too.

Thought the step by step instructions might be handy . Now you've learnt a new skill and know how to do it for next time

Indeed. Thank you. Not sure whats happening with the install as it has been 'searching for software updates' for several minutes with nothing seemingly happening.  When i had the wrong file on the SD card it told me within a minute..so is the searching for software updates taking ages normal?
