Title: Is this the latest software for my infotainment? - Screen has a mind of it's own
Post by: Lordie on 26 January 2020, 21:10
Hey guys

Quick intro:
Some of you may have seen in my other thread that I purchased a 2013/2014 MK7 GTi last month and I am having an issue with the infotainment screen. Basically when I first start up the car it has a mind of it's own - starts opening lots of menus, the button animations at the bottom of the screen keep popping up as if there was a hand near the screen, it changes my radio station presets etc. I'm really gutted since I can't see how the garage would care about helping me fix this, not to mention I bought it from a garage 1hr30 away. I imagine the repairs easily running into the hundreds to fix this if it's not an easy fix like an update.

I'm hoping a VW software update may fix this and just wanted to know how up to date the software I am running is in the picture below. My other ideas in order are - Do a factory reset, VW software update (not sure if/how much this would cost me), look into a screen replacement, finally look at replacing the actual 'brain' of the system as someone said in the other thread.

Any help or advice would be hugely appreciated, thanks!

You really shouldn't be looking to sort this out yourself- you are creating a rod for your own back.
The dealer has sold you a lemon- you should hand the car back to him, tell him to fix it- or you want your money back.

Agree with Yusee.

If there is a warranty with the car, then it's the dealers job to sort this. The more you fiddle about, not only do you risk making the problem worse, but you're also letting the dealer off the hook.

I can try contacting the dealer but it's not exactly a solution since I want to keep the car . Plus the garage is over 1hr30 away so taking it there isn't a good option

Top and bottom of it is the unit doesn't work and they will have known it didn't work. Ring them and give them the chance to rectify it. If not say you're taking it to a vw dealership and they can pay the bill. It should be working and firmware isn't really something that's done outside of VW.

As mcmaddy has stated, first thing I would do is get in touch with the garage you bought it from. Explain the issue and that you want to take it into VW to diagnose/rectify. They should be willing to cover the cost of this as you can tell them that you'll want your time/fuel etc covered if you have to go to them.

I had something similar with an independent garage once but they happily covered the cost of diagnosis/rectification at the BMW main dealers.

Worse case you have to make the trip to them but they too will have to do the same and give it in to VW to diagnose anyway. So it's cheaper for them to cover the cost at your local dealer.

I appreciate it maybe a pain taking it back to the dealer but a few phone calls and possibly an hour and a half journey still seems a better option that trying to take this on yourself..... you may be able to get them to agree to take it somewhere locally!

None of my business but is your reluctance to take it back because it was a private sale or something???

To do a firmware update you need someone with ODIS (dealer software) and a license, and pay them for the log in,
Changing the unit inside the glovebox is a balls ache as you need to get rid of CP and then get it programmed to have all the features your current one has,
Changing the screen is fairly easy but I’d say expensive
Isn’t a factory reset just pressing a couple of buttons?
Personally if it’s under warranty I’d take it back

There is a recall for infotainment, just ring vw dealer give them chassis no and they'll tell you if your eligible. Its a software update

Thanks for all the replies. Haven't been a member of the community long but I like it here already.

So I've done a bit testing and everything seems to point towards a faulty touch screen. When the temperature is a little colder and as the car is warming up I assume the screen is expanding and contracting from the temperature change and causing the screen to think someone is pressing it, therefore opening looooads of random menus and sometimes even saving radio stations to different preset numbers. It's a right pain!. But as the temperatures have been a bit warmer over the past week or so it hasn't been doing it so much. As soon as colder weather comes round again all the issues will be back.

Contacted my local VW and eve they said issues with these are common. There does seem to be a software update for it but my local VW dealer charges £60 for the privilege of plugging something in and hitting a button for the update.

The cost of a new touch screen from VW is £760 inc VAT and that does not include fitting.

I got another quote from VW for £2,900 or £2,000 if I exchanged my old infotainment for a new one but I assume this price is for the whole system and not just the touch screen where the fault seems to be.

But anyway, I am in touch with the garage I bought the car from and they are more that willing to help. I did contact the AA warranty I had got from the garage but as you can guess they do whatever they can to get out of it and said the issue was on the car before purchase so they will not help.
Thought I'd post this reply as it may help others with similar issues and will keep this post updated.

I assume no one else has had the same issues then?. Is it just my screen that goes crazy when the temperatures cold??

I don't doubt that others have not had the same if not similar issue(s) with their infotainment systems. Suggest you give them a chance to reply?
As fellow posters have already stated, you need to take this up with the dealer you purchased the car from. It is their responsibility to remedy the issue. No ifs, no buts. It is what the law is there for. Whether you choose to exercise that law to assist you is entirely up to you. You state that the selling dealer is willing to help? Then I suggest you let them help...?

Yes don't worry, I am in touch with the dealer.

I just wondered if anyone has had the same issue with the temperature interfering with the screen, due to the type of material the screen is made of I'm surprised it's not more common

Why are they charging £60 an hour for a free update ?
My 2014 was done a few weeks ago. Search for the previous posts about it and give them the recall code.

But if you can get a new screen, ever better !

I can remember this issue being discussed back in the early days of the mk7, so a bit of creative searching using the forum search facility and you may find some older discussion threads covering this.

Many of those early owners will have moved on now to newer cars / different brands of vehicle so may not be active on the forum, hence why you might not be getting much response from other owners with the issue that you're currently experiencing.

It doesn’t seem to be such an issue - if at all - with MIB 2 or MIB 3 units.

I have owned my car since October 2013. My NavPro unit originally came with an early firmware version and kept crashing (locking up actually), but my dealer updated that and all has been well since.

I had the latest update applied last October when it went in for the service with the supplying dealership - I can't say I've noticed any difference since it was applied.
