I would. 20000 is a bit of a push.so 1 year for me.

If 7,000 miles a year is pretty much your typical annual mileage then the time and distance service regime is more suitable for you; a service every 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever is soonest. Long life / flexible servicing is more suited to higher mileage drivers. The long life / flexible service regime is the default from the factory, but your dealer can change this to time and distance for you.
If you’re leasing your car though, I wouldn’t be too bothered if it was on long life servicing, even with your low annual mileage as you’ll be handing it back at the end of the lease.

Mine also is 1yo in Dec. and I've done about 8000 miles. At present the car tells me the flexible service should be in 283 days. I will be changing to time and distance and getting a 1yr service.
I did the same on the Audi I had a few years ago.
-
Mine is 9 months old and 7,000 miles. It’s telling me I need an oil change service in 1,500 miles or 35 days.
Seems a bit soon but that’s what it says on the screen.

Mine came up around 8k/12months as well.
For the OP, worth an oil change at 12 months anyway but no issues if you just do as the car says.
-
Mine's coming up to 6 years old (in April) and I'm just about to top 30,000 miles. I've still serviced annually despite my low mileage.
Edit - 5 years old lol.
-
Booked mine in for first service next week- 11 months old, 7.5k on clock and still another 1800 miles til service due.
Whether there is any long term benefit from servicing sooner than scheduled is anybody’s guess- I’ll let you know my experience in 10 years time!
One thing I haven’t missed is main dealer servicing ( first time in over 10 years for me). £216 for an oil change. Bunch of thieves.

Sounds a bit steep? Thought it was about £165/170 at my local JCT600.

Probably not. My last car, Audi A4, was kept on the longlife servicing schedule and averaged 8k miles per year. Had it for 11 years with no problems. Sold it to a friend at work who is still using it and it's 16 years old now.
-
I think it depends no how long you intend to keep it. If you'll change it after 3 years, why spend more money than you need to? It won't make the car worth any more.
-
I found this quite confusing too.
It can be long life or it can be annual or it can be this or it can be that!?!?
My previous cars, non VW brands, just had ONE service routine. Clear and straight forward. The last car BMW was long life (2 years / 19k miles whatever came first), before that it was a Peugeot with annual services (1 year or 12k miles from memory).
I'm choosing to go with annual services on the GTI however. We usually cover about 15k per year. I guess you could that a "long mileage annual service" (long compared to someone who covers 7k miles per year)

I thought it was steep, i seem to remember figures like £170 mentioned on the forum. At least I have a “ while you wait” booking when i’m off work next week. They will probably see me 3 times in 3 years and that’ll be it

Good to hear. Look after her, she’ll look after you! I bet that most cars run to very high mileage have had few owners and frequent oil changes.
-
Consensus looks to be get her serviced yearly no matter what miles you are doing. It’s not a lease and will b with me a while Unless she goes on the market in new year

Why not see if they’ll price match a local garage ?
I’ve just asked for a price match on a minor and spark plugs from £320 down to £235.

Interesting. The short answer is I couldn’t be bothered. Some of my costs are tax deductible and the vw price match sounded like absolute rubbish. In fact I nearly fell off my chair laughing- written quote, like for like within 5 miles!!!
-
Well, the cheeky bstrds have just tried to charge me £261 for first service ( the quote I was given on the phone I distinctly remember was £216.61.)
They agreed to 216 when I said I’d go, and leave them with an empty slot
I think I will use price match next time, if only to stop them charging whatever they feel they can get away with.
I hate these places.
-
Should be fixed price at £179 for a minor service (including GTI)

In relation to this topic, where have fellow members found a trustworthy VW garage in London?

Not perfect and just outside but Lookers in Hersham have been pretty good. Just need to check the car 100% before and after to make sure there's no damage. They have observed my no wash instructions and have stuck to quotes or come in under.

The link posted by zxmatt above is for cars over 3 years old, but yes, fair enough I’ve learnt a lesson.
Other than price, it wasn’t too bad an experience. Car left unwashed as per instructions, and nothing damaged.

Hindsight’s a wonderful thing, but VW’s service plan for cars under one year old gives the first (a minor) and second (a major) year services for just under £297 for both services.
You can buy a new VW service plan for the next two services, but the service plan for cars over a year old is more expensive; £484.20 for a minor and major service, but it still works out cheaper than paying for one minor and one major service if you don’t have a service plan (£179 minor, £349 major; total £549j.
You can spread the cost of the service plan over 18 months, so you don’t have to pay the full cost up front. The second service plan doesn’t include a brake fluid change which is due when the car’s three years old. But you’d pay for that separately anyway on top of the third service cost, irrespective of whether you have a service plan or not.
Some dealers may have their own version of VW’s service plan that work out cheaper, so always worth checking with the dealer if you plan on having your car serviced within the VW dealer network rather than going to an independent.

Thanks SRGTD- very useful info. Really not sure why I didn’t take a service plan when I purchased looking at these numbers. Think I’ll visit the dealer in next few weeks and buy a plan- won’t be a massive saving for me now but at least i’ll get a fixed price

Thats for cars over three years old - the OP's car is one year old and he is asking about first service costs - so sadly prices in the link don't apply to him.

I have placed an order for a new GTI - current service plan "promotion" I have been offered and will be taking out is £199 for first 2 services but I believe it has been as low as £149 in the last year or so. I believe that it is subject to taking out PCP finance though (which you can pay off without losing any add ons). Might be worth asking why you were not offered something like that?

The part I really struggle with here, service plan or not, is that the 1st and 2nd service, or minor and major, are in reality exactly the same in terms of actual service items, i.e. an oil and filter change so the "major" service comes at a significant additional cost for checks on items that, with the exception of brake fluid level, are part of the vehicle health check that's done anyway. Without a plan that's £170.00 for pretty much nothing at all, which is naughty.

Second service should include pollen an air filter change.

In response to Zayd’s request. I highly recommend Alan Day City in Wapping. I’ve received nothing but great service from them for the past 10 years.
-
I have booked the 1st oil service and was quoted £159. Then I got an email from the dealer saying it will be at no cost as I had bought the car with a service plan. I didn't know that the 1st owner had bought one, so have asked VWFS to transfer the plan.

Result .
The plan stays with the car I believe ,I've just this week signed my life away for one
and was told this by vw Dealer

Thanks, I hope so

Jason, by signing your life away i take it you have just bought a another car.
I am now on my second Golf GTI (although my signature strip below doesn’t say so) and I totally love them and have no regrets.
Enjoy your new car mate
