Title: Change Club Sport for TCR?
Post by: 09GTI on 30 March 2019, 13:48
So looking for some opinions
I’ve a 2017 clubsport ( without buckets ) which is mint and I love it but I’ve an option on a pure Grey TCR with black roof and with the pan roof , pro nav , keyless and that pack that has the 19” reifnitz Matt black wheels , and also that blind spot monitoring thing and tinted windows , camera etc
The car itself is 5k euro more than the clubsport was so a bit of an increase for not s lot really but I’m still tempted but not sure if it’s worth it
Any opinions are welcome
Cheers

No chance, I wouldn't even consider it.

Is the 5k euro the difference in new prices or what you’d now have to pay to switch?

Never thought I would say this, but bearing in mind the two specs, I would get the TCR.

Same. Haven’t even bothered to cost one up. Would wait for the rush to end if I were interested too.

The 5k difference is the new price difference between club sport and TCR
The actual cost to change is 53k euro new TCR , trade in of clubsport 31k euro so 22k euro - so club sport has depreciated by 17k euro in 2.5 years

53k Euros?!! It’s not April 1st till Monday!

I take it the OP is in Ireland...

Yep, a TCR with a couple of options ticked is north of 50k here!

I think you’d be crazy. 17 grand depreciation in 2 years. You’ve suffered the worst of the depreciation curve and you’re actually tempted to do it again. Keep the CS another year and you’ll still be getting offered near 30k for it - i.e. you’ve taken the worst of the hit already.

Clubsport prices look pretty solid now. I found a nice one for £27k but got a year left on my lease or I’d be tempted. TCR will drop. OP would have to be crackers (or completely loaded!) to swap now.

OP, sorry, I can't think in Euros, €22k is around £19k, I think about it like this, for the price difference you could get a 2.5 year old GTI with 20k miles, not that you would, but you need to be rich or mad to swap a year old car for a new one basically the same for that cost. But I'm not you and know nothing of your circumstances so that amount of money might mean nothing but I definitely wouldn't do it. Plus, longer term I would think the CS would hold it's money better (disclaimer, I'm rubbish at investing so are likely to be wrong ).

There’s no way I’d change a CS for a TCR. I think the TCR will become a regular trim level gti. Think it’ll be there in the Mk8 sitting above the PP. The CS or any anniversary model is a different kettle of fish.

Yes in Ireland
indeed it’s july delivery so 17k euro in 2.5 years is savage for sure
Problem is you are always tempted
My main thoughts are that I’m not getting a huge amount of upgrades in terms of performance in every day driving - I won’t be on a track !
so virtual cockpit and shooting rear indicators and bigger more modern nav screen ...
But you generally lose all sensible reasoning when it comes to cars !

From a residuals perspective, the Clubsport will hold value better as it's a limited production car. TCR is a run out special which isn't to say that there is anything wrong with it, I just don't think there is value in changing at the financial cost you've mentioned.

If there are things that you are missing from your Clubsport, you could always have them retrofitted. I added Apple Car Play into my CSS and am going to change the tail lights shortly to the 7.5. Sometimes a little refresh or addition of items you didn't get or wasn't available to order at the time can make a difference.

Yep it would certainly be cheaper to change the rear lights to the 7.5 ones !!

Would you mind me asking how much you’ve been quoted for the dynamic lights, I’ve found £1250 fitted but don’t have anything to compare it to.

Not the same kind of light but rather more attractive to me , look at this beauty - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Art-Nouveau-Arts-and-Crafts-BGH-Copper-Brass-Table-Lamp-Wall-Light-WAS-Benson/163621302492?hash=item261896f0dc:g:OAgAAOSw2CBb6Exk

I'm not sure i'd spend it either TBH. But for those that would, they may be able to recoup some of the cost by selling their existing lights on, or take them off and sell separately when selling the car. Still expensive, but it'd soften the blow.

I've not investigated it yet to be honest but judging by other comments in this thread, you have some answers already.

The TCR is a great run out model but unless you’re absolutety loaded and/or smitten with it there’s no way it’s worth anything like as significant a sum as that to change up from a Clubsport.

To my eyes the darker tails of the CS look nicer than the lighter red tails of the TCR. The swooshing indicators can be added to the mk7 lights in a half arsed fashion quite cheaply via a plug in.

If the beautifully clear and unique analogue dials of the CS aren’t doing it for you and you crave the flat and characterless TFT dials they can be retrofitted as can the 7.5 media screens.

Add the drilled discs, 7.5 tails, 7.5 gauge conversion and touchscreen audio together, all of which can be reversed at sale time and you’ll still be quids/euros in and still have a car with some real heritage.

Save your money! Go on a holiday. Buy a RIB. Get a pilots licence. Go on a Vegas bender.

There is absolutely no way you should downgrade and pay for the pleasure.

If you’re referring to Apple CarPlay I’ve done that too. My dealer did mine using an activation code which you’ll need to pay for. There are a number of retrofit places which may do it for less, but I’m not sure if there are any of those near Cornwall.

You will need to go through the main dealer to buy the license key which is £215 if I recall. If you have a CSS, they'll also need to replace the USB socket which they included as part of the job. There was a compatibility issue with the stock item.

I've not replaced the tail lights on the CSS, it's a job for summer but I might take it into HazzyDayz as they'll be far quicker on the coding and know where all the trim leverage points are. I swapped bi-xenons into a MKVI I owned a few years back and experience counts as does preparation. There is a lot more information out there these days but the colour coding on the wiring looms was not fun.

Notice you have a GT4. Snap ... there can't be many people with a GT4 and a CSS!

£960??, my 7R lights were a quarter of that and I had to think long and hard about getting my wallet out for them

Car play cost was offensive but no other way to do it as the gouging is in part a pass down license cost from Apple. I suspect VW would like me to think that they get nothing out of it...

Think you're right, can't be too many people with a GT4 / CSS combination. Waiting for the 718 GT4 which I think will be the last new NA car I ever buy. Assuming the rumours are right. How long have you had the combo?

Good luck with the 718. My name is down but at best, 50% chance of an allocation.

Had my GT4 for 3years now (from new) and I bought my first CSS (from new) in December 2016, sold in august 2017 (to buy a boat) and now bought my second (6000 miles 3rd owner). First was number 139 and this one is 114 I think.

Likewise. I put a LOI in for the 718 in 2015 and am on good terms so here's hoping. I went PTS on my GT4 and waited for an eternity (17 months) for the car to arrive because of it. I thought the wait was going to kill me.

I bought a Macan GTS new last year as my daily, spec'd it to be as much of a driver's car as was possible and got rid of it after 8 weeks. Worst car I ever bought and replaced it with the CSS. I had an allocation for a CSS in 2016 but had to pass due to a major issue with my eyes where I spent 2017 blind so my CSS is my second one in a sense too.
