Has anyone else had swirl marks inflicted on their car by dealers? They’ve only washed mine twice but it looked awful under the sun today. Shameful at only 5 months old.
And on that note can anyone recommend a dual action polisher? I’ve never needed one in the past but lesson learned the hard way that VW dealers can’t wash cars properly!

Unfortunately very common. The only way to prevent dealers inflicting swirl marks on your car is to instruct them never to wash it. And get some Do Not Wash hangers like these.

Recommendations for DA polishers. Can’t go wrong with a DAS6 Pro to start out with. Takes both full size pads and spot psds so very versatile. http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/polishing-machines/das-6-pro-dual-action-polisher/das-6-pro-dual-action-polisher/prod_673.html
Look at one of the complete kits.

The DAS above is great and will definitely do the job. In terms of polish, I recently used the Sonax Profline Perfect Finish. I found it broke down readily with just a few passes, but was enough to deal with any light swirls. It also left a great gloss and the residue wiped away easily.

I have bought a DAS6 Pro a few months ago but haven’t even used it yet.
Need some instruction on how to use. Which videos or tutorials are best to watch for a quickie bit of guidance.

Rebecca, where do you get these from as I can't seem them on their website shop ?

Mine are always under strict instructions not to wash the car and I make sure I actually see them write it on the job sheet.

No they don’t sell them. But you can get similar online.

Make sure you instruct the dealer not to wash the car too, get it marked and highlighted on the dealer worksheet, then use the hangers. Before hangers used to just write on a big piece of cardboard and stick it across front seats.

I'm in a similar position barring the fact that I haven't bought one yet  But it is very high on the to do list
I've been watching junkman on youtube, he does tend to repeat things a lot but he does keep it simple and is very encouraging. Only obstacle so far has been that he said not to polish outside - I've no choice on that.

Problems with polishing outside are few. Obviously avoid direct sunlight. Make sure the section you are about to work on is dust free. It's not as easy to see your results outside either. I like to turn the garage lights off and use an LED light shone from different angles to inspect progress.

@DarrenW; if you’ve ever seen a VW dealer undertake a courtesy service wash on a customer’s car, swirl marks in the paintwork are unfortunately going to be the outcome.
As others have said, whenever your car has to go back to the dealer for servicing, warranty work or repairs, ensure they are made aware that your car is not to be washed.
I also try to ensure my car has just been washed before taking it into the dealer for servicing / repairs. Makes it easier for the walk-around inspection for any damage with the service advisor when checking it in, and to check for damage when they’ve finished working on it. Fortunately, the service advisor I usually see is into car detailing and knows I am too, and he remembers that my car’s not to be washed. I still put my ‘do not wash’ hanger on the rear view mirror, tie a ‘do not wash tag’ on the keys, and ensure they’ve noted on the worksheet not to wash my car.

@Watts, although I have a garage, it’s a single sized one that was built in the 80’s, so not large enough for anything other than to park the car in. There’s certainly not enough room to machine polish my car in there, so I use my DA outside.
As dubber36 has said, avoid polishing in direct sunlight. Also avoid polishing if it’s a windy day, otherwise you could be polishing dust and grit into the paintwork that gets blown onto your car.
You could always invest in a detailing marquee............ seriously, if you’ve got enough room, and don’t mind the neighbours reactions and likely comments, it would give you a good environment to machine polish - out of the sun and wind, and any other weather for that matter.
-
Thanks, I’ll order that kit.
Definitely need to get some sort of sign to put in the car. I thought people that used them were just fussy but I understand now. As well as the swirls they used a damp rag to wipe all the surfaces which left a haze on the shiny trim, screens and glass.
Funny how BMW washed my MINI several times with no issues but just twice with VW has it looking worn and uncared for.

Thanks SR, it might be the case of doing it over a few weeks and concentrating on just one panel a day. As for a marquee, 1. I'm not sure my wallet can take that as well and 2. round my way it would just be assumed there was a search going on to locate the victims of some heinous crime....

They haven’t unearthed my victims yet.
