Title: GTI 7.5 Map Update....
Post by: cosmicremedy on 23 November 2017, 10:39
Hi,

I need to update the maps on my car, but after going to the web site it is only showing upto 2016 on the Golf GTI and Golf 7 drop down menu's.  Has anyone else updated there maps recently.

This is the site i have gone to, directed from the VW web site -

http://www.navigation.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/Navteq-NavteqEurope-Site/en_GB/-/GBP/View-Promo?Page=VW_Europe&NewLocaleID=en_GB&NewDomainName=Navteq-NavteqEurope-Site&cwt=application/ApplicationFrame_campaign_light

For info my brother has an Octavia vRS and he's just put the latest maps on about a week ago.

Thanks.

Martin

Nav Pro Mk 7 GTi gen 2. May is the latest I can find anywhere so would be interesting to see where you've got more up to date from.

Is that the May map update?

I doubt it as I already had that back in May and the DiscoverCare software told me there was an update which I did yesterday.

Just looked at that link and it says download a map without detours - would that suggest it won’t reroute you if say a road was blocked or major traffic issues?

Haha  Marketing use of English

It could say "Get a new map without delays" and you could think "wow, this navigation map won't contain delays, amazing!"

Thanks for the links but has anyone successfully used the Mk 7 pro archive above? I've downloaded twice but both times P166_N60S5MIBH3_EU_NT.md5 won't extract with 7zip so there seems to be an issue with it. I've updated twice before with no problems. It's a pain given the download is 25GB!

My past source below is still showing no update since May:

I've managed to update a single country map using it but it was painfully slow. I did it sat on the drive rather than using mobile data.

Shame really as I thought this might be the best way of doing it

Same here. Download and ran the DiscoverCare app on my PC from the above link. Unlocked and inserted my VW SD Card.

It says I have the latest version, but the latest version is only 5 days old.

I think I might run the update anyway after SWMBO has finished watching Holby on iplayer

It's a big update. Going to take a while with my connection. :undecided:

Also tried the radio station logos download. It still doesn't have some of the Absolute or Magic station logos.

Thanks for warning. Think I'll leave it for now.

Update on update - because of our internet connection and the file size it said it would take almost 6 hours. If I do this I want to know a) that it works b) it makes a difference.

Got it to work eventually :nerd:

So I went to this site - http://webspecial.volkswagen.de/maps/int/en/index.html (http://webspecial.volkswagen.de/maps/int/en/index.html)

(This didn't work for my Discover Media VW SD Card -

I downloaded the DiscoverCare program. This program said that the there were no updates available.

I went to the next page, did the backup, then the download which took hours, then the install which failed near the end.)

This did work for my Discover Media VW SD Card -

I downloaded the European Countries, Bundle 1, 17/12/12 update.

Then I dowloaded the 7.zip program near the bottom of the updates page and installed it.

I copied all the data off my VW SD Card into a folder on my computer. So the card was empty.

Then I clicked on the update file with my right button and used 7.zip to extract the 'MAPS' to my SD Card.

Remember to lock the SD Card again.

Now the Navigation info says 2018.

Note: as with any update you do so at your own risk!

Thought I might upgrade my maps since I haven't done so since I bought the car in Sept 2016, two questions:

1) Is it not possible to use a 32gb or bigger usb flash drive instead of an SD? The car has a usb port so I'd imagine it should be a usable source for upgrades. I have downloaded the maps in my workstation which lacks any SD card adapter so it's a bit of a pain moving the maps to a laptop only to have access to an SD port.

2) Strangely enough, out of the 25 or so gb of the entire download, the MIB2 folder is just 4.27gb. Can I just copy that to my SD together with the .md5 file and attempt an upgrade that way? Can't understand why the MIB1 data would be 5 times larger unless there's been some error during unzipping...

PS. Mine is a MK7 Discover Pro but I believe the answers to those questions are the same for the 7.5

You can't use a USB key, it has to be a SD card - it will only look for updates in the SD slots.

Yes, you can strip the MIB2 folder out, but keep the file in the root directory (if you look there are 2 folders and a file, the file is the bit you need to keep)

Ok, so MIB2 folder and .md5 file copied in an SD, that's less than 5GB, shouldn't take that long.

I would be interested to see if this works; I have copied the full file once manually and I don't fancy doing it again in the near future.

I very much doubt it will work properly. You need everything that's downloaded to be on the SD card not just parts of it. The map data is the same for mib1 and mib2 so if you don't have the mib1 folder you'll probably not be updating the maps. Interesting to see what happens though.

What you say kind of makes sense in the way that the file sizes (if actually independable between MIB1 and 2) don't add up. How can MIB1 be 19GB and MIB2 only 4.5??

Fredgroves seems to believe it will work though so I'll give it a try. I doubt you can brick a Discover unit with an incomplete SD card (hopefully)

Lets put it this way, when I removed the MIB2 from it when I had a MIB1 NavPro on my last car.... it worked just fine.

I wonder if the size difference is simply that the MIB2 system supports compressed maps? There is quite a difference between MIB2 and MIB1 in many respects... more than meets the eye, which is why you could never update a MIB1 device to support App Connect etc.

Can you only select the UK map to copy over? I do not need the other Europe maps, so that could reduce the size dramatically!

But that sounds a bit different no? MIB1 surely doesn't need MIB2 data as it's not forwards compatible. MIB2 though could potentially use some MIB1 data on top of its own MIB2-specific data. In that case only copying the MIB2 folder would not work. But I'd expect to just come across a failure.

I think you'd have to manually edit the manifest file to remove the others, otherwise it would try to find them and fail...

So... just the MIB2 folder and .md5 file failed to be recognized as a valid source for upgrading. I guess all units need MIB1 data as well so I'll be adding that to the SD tomorrow and re-try. Sounded too good to be true...

Hmm that's odd

I'll report if just copying the MIB1 folder extra did it or there was another issue.

Both 1 and 2s use the same map data but it just displays it better on the mib2. I would guess the mib2 file contents contains only data that the 2 can use and removing it for a 1 would work like Fred did. Unfortunately for a mib2 pro unit we need the full download.

You can't use a USB key, it has to be a SD card - it will only look for updates in the SD slots.

Yes, you can strip the MIB2 folder out, but keep the file in the root directory (if you look there are 2 folders and a file, the file is the bit you need to keep)

Turns out you can actually use a USB key just fine. The soft button is labelled "Update USB/SD" and so I tried with a USB flash this morning and it starts updating normally. (Strangely, on my first attempt with an SD yesterday it seemed to work fine, then when it reached 100% an error popped up: "Error: Restart the software update"   Let's see if I succeed with the USB this time.

Also, as said before you can't strip any folder for MIB2 units or it fails, it needs all the contents of the zip file.

I guess its changed a bit since MIB1.

I've not actually managed to get my MIB2 NavPro to update since I've had this Mk7.5...

Kinda given up as I rarely use the VW nav itself now.

Adding speed cam POIs and using car net to update traffic has reinvigorated the VW sat nav for me

Do I need to update my 7.5 collected today? Maps show 2017/2018.

Ok so even with the USB card I got the same error after hitting 100% completion, "error, restart software update" but I guess it might be some sort of bug (the showing up of the error) as the maps now show (I think) the latest version:

V03959800QS0166 ECE 2018

and below each country map, it shows 2018.

Nav works as usual so can't be bothered more...

Just on updating my SD card now. Using the direct download file posted earlier in this thread.

My existing card had a maps folder and a .txt file. I’ve copied both of these to my Mac as a backup then deleted them off the card.

I’ve extracted the 7zip and there is a maps folder and a .md5 file which I’m copying to the SD card.

Is that all I need to do? Any reason why the old version had a .txt file and then new one has a .md5 file?

It's just a checksum file.

I don’t know what a checksum is lol but I copied it to the card anyway!

Everything seems to have worked and my version info now says 0915 ECE1 2018.

Did mine this afternoon with no problems, other than it took about 3 hours in all. Works OK. Updated camera POI's from Pocket GPS at the same time and also added 3 albums to my music SD card. All set!

Have to say, I've never noticed anything change for a nav data update, but I live in hope!

You've got maps for the entirety of Europe pretty much... every road. I'm sure somewhere in there you will find changes, but probably no surprises on your daily commute that you've not noticed ;-)

Any recommendations for camera POIs that work with Discover Pro? Never looked into this thing but I guess if it's there why not add it to the system.

I have the Thinkware dashcam, which comes with a camera database, which is updated regularly.

How up to date are they about the cameras? A friend has on his but it still shows cameras in the West Midlands.

Same here, but I find seeing the cameras on my satnav map beforehand more useful. Also, the one thing I find problematic with the Thinkware dashcam is that you have to wait till the GPS is connected if it has been turned off for a period of time.

The maps are pretty much updated every couple of weeks. I can't remember driving past a camera that hasn't appeared on my satnav using the database, so I am very happy and more then willing to pay £20 per year!

IWAGTI was meaning the other way around - when a camera gets removed, is it removed from the DB? Being alerted to long gone static cameras can be very annoying.

In Waze only super users can mark a camera as not there, I guess pocketGPS is the same...

When you have the pocketgps cameras loaded is it possible for the inbuilt satnav to notify you when you’re near?

You add them to the satnav as POIs using a sd card (info in link below) and you get alerts. An alternative is to add as POIs using car net but you don't get alerts.

The problem is that "near" is pretty close, say 30 metres ish, so not useful for avoiding detection! Also, the warning sound is not customisable, not very urgent and it's volume is dependant on your current navigation announcement volume. I have the screen set to the fixed "300 yards" scale so that I have a decent forward coverage and will, hopefully, notice any unfamiliar camera symbols. Not ideal, but better than nothing!

Better to use Waze over AndroidAuto :D

No fiddly camera updates, no pathetic VW nav "bong" and you can set it so it only alerts if you are speeding AND about to meet a camera. No alerts for law abiding drivers :D

Yeah that is what I meant. Does it show cameras that are there but not switched on? In the WM they didn't remove most of the cameras even though none of them are switched on.

Right,
I must be an idiot, because I cannot get the update to work.

I've used the Discovercare to build my SD card.
I've inserted it into slot 2 (Slot1 has original VW card).
Tried update and get an error saying no data found.

I've also switched cards around, VW card is then detected in slot 2 but still no update found.

Bit concerned about wiping original card and then getting screwed.
I've now tried downloading the files and unzipping using 7zip... no difference.

On my Unit it shows the following under System Info:
Device part number: 3Q00335874C
Hardware: H41
Software: 0468

Unless you've got Nav pro then you must use the supplied VW card. You say wiping it but what you actually need to do is copy the contents to your computer so if anything does go wrong you can copy original back to the card.
