Hey people, ive got a J-reg 1991 Golf Driver, on the log book its written as a 1600cc or 1597?!? anyway, ive always thought it was too quick for a standard 1600 until one day i pulled away from a GTI 8v too easily, when started chatting to the 8v owner he was amazed and gutted as he had done loads of work to his GTI, i.e. Cams, chip, etc. (said it was pushing 130bhp)??!!!!!
Anyway im wondering if mine could possibly be a 1.8? ive looked at the engine code but looks like theres a bit missing. Any1 know the difference between the codes on a 1.6 and 1.8? Want to know what has been done to mine to make it that quick?!!! Oh yeah, the speedo says 206,000 miles!!!!
-
hmmm....ive got a 1.6 and ran a 1.8 standard before and kept up to mid way through 2nd gear, then it killed me, If its got cams etc it might need a tune, Either that or theres somthing special in your engine bay
-
definately doesn't sound like a normal 1.6 that's for sure!!
My engine code starts EZ if I remember correctly.....which doesn't happen very often LOL
Sounds like that blokes 8v needs sorting. It's alright putting things on but if they ain't set up properly it's like he ain't done anything!!
-
The bloke who owned that GTI 8v also owns a Corrado G60 and an R32, so i would imagine that his 8v was set-up, it had 'Genetically Moddified' stickers all over it? Ring any bells?
Just had another look at my engine code near the dizzy, it starts BZ i think? had to scrub away lots of oil
When i blow my engine up then i will be able to tell if anything has been fondled with?!!!
-
if its on 206k then it may have had a new engine? even if it is a 1.8 carb it wudnt pull away from any gti,
take a picture of you engine bay it might have some special treats
-
My dad is the kiddy when it comes to performance engines as he has his own buisness fitting big performance motors in small cars, he has had a look at my motor and cant find anything visible! (except a standard pierburg 1.8 carb)
Its a mystery!!!
Im happy enough anyway, keep reeling those 8 valvers in
-
i bought a 1.6 driver not too long ago and it was very fast, when the engine broke and we took it out to put another in we discovered that somewhere along the line it had had a dodgy engine conversion and was actually running a 1.8, i now have a genuine 1.6 and its just as fast until about 75, my 1.8 had a far better top end. either way my friend let me have a go in his 16v Gti and theres not a chance that a mk2 carb engine weather 1.6 or 1.8 could pull away anything like as quick, and this Gti was completelt standard too.
-
I had a mark2 1.6 dirver and i have also had (unfortunately) an 8valve mark3 gti and i would say that my 1.6 would of beaten the mark 3. it just felt so more lively than the mark3, i know we're talking about a mark2 8valve but i just thought i would enlighten you all with that.
-
i dont think the mk3 8v Gti, should even be classed as a Gti, its too slow.
-
So what does GTi actually mean then? Think about it.... I don't think it's about class at all. I think that VW just decided to refine the car and add toys to it to make it more enjoyable on journeys. I would certainly never go back to my Mk2 after my Mk3. It was quick yes, but it had no refinement at all. The mk3 is all about VWs response to the market - so just leave it out ok!!
-
Grand Touring Injection
leave it out??? im not dissing the mk3 at all, its just the 8v was quiet slow in comparison, the 16v is a very good improvement tho, either way they look sweet, a mate of mine has a red mk2 Gti and its one of the best looking cars ive seen
-
Exactamundo....! They're grand tourers - designed to make journeys more enjoyable and fun.... Not necessarily to whip the @ss off an XR2 at the traffic light grand prix....! Speed and outright accelleration isn't everything people look for in a GTI...!
-
dnt get me wrong it was a nice drive the mark 3 but when it came to wanted to give it some beans i got nothing out of it!
my mark 2 is alright, got just as much toys as the mark 3, leccy windows, power steering at the such like.
-
Sorry to correct you, i think its Gran Tourer Injection (from what i understand Gran means its got fast bits on it (i.e mutipoint injection, and tourer means its got luxury bits on it)
lets not forget what these cars were desgined for, they are practical performance hatch backs and are designed for everyday use and when you want to drive it hard then it will allow you to do so with its party piece (whats under the bonnet)
-
to quote jeremy clarkson:
'the golf GTI is all things to all men'
(and women of course!!)
-
it certainly is!
at the end of the day no matter which golf u have its always better than its french (or whatever) cuonterpart, i.e mark 2 16valve to the 205 gti (may not be faster then the 205, but its a better allround car, as is the mark 3 may not be faster than the 306 gti 6) but better alround car and people with prefer to buy a golf than some french rubbish!
-
i'll never buy a french car if can help it!!
there's a reason why the Golf name has been around for 30 years....Funny how the french keep changing the name of theirs...205,206 and 305, 306 and so on.....
-
Spot on.
-
Haha, well said!
I know, my mates have all had french cars at some point- 5 GT Turbos, VTR's, Clio 16v, and to be fair they are all quick motors......
Im affraid i used to be a Vauxhall Astra Mk2 guy, then i was converted by my cousin to MK2 Golfs!!! -now im totally addicted!
As for the Mk3 GTI topic, im yet to race a Mk3 thats beaten me.... the GTI badge is race bred, if you want comfort, fuel economy, soft suspension, you look at maybe a TDI?
The Mk1 GTI has power, light weight, class, uprated everything
The Mk2 GTI has power, medium weight, class, stiff suspension, electrics, i could go on......
The Mk3 GTI has less power than all GTI's, heavy as a boat, wallows round corners like a boat, boring.....
The Mk4 GTI has...........a Turbo?, a boat!
The Mk5 GTI has...........WHY????
In fact, what im trying to say is, MK2's rule!!!!
(sorry if this post has upset anyone?! I'll get me coat )

Well tbqh I am offended at your lack of ability to read. In fact, had this been in the mk3 section I'd have taken even more objection. Read what I said numbnut - VW just made the car different. It grew up. It's not about racing other cars.
And guess what - I've got a GTI and you've only got a poxy 'driver'! Was this forum 'Golfdriver.co.uk'? No? Well then.
-
' DRIVER ' is just daily runner, amongst the collection.
I didnt mean to offend anybody else i would of been a bit more harsher
On a serious note, i was VERY tempted to buy a Mk3 VR6 last week......i wanted the leather seats!
-
 see..?
-
I love my driver, but I want a GTI, the only reason I've got the driver at the moment is the insurance cost.
814 for the driver best quote
1250 for my friend's mk3 16v 2.0
When I've got some no claims behind me, then I'll get one!
-
id rather have a french car than an 8v mk3

same here, when i can afford the insurance on a Gti i will get one imediatly, but for now itll have to be a driver.
im not gonna lie, i think very little of mk3`s, some of them look really cool tho,
i apoligise too if it offends anyone that i dont like them but at the end of the day i like mk2`s for what they are and the mk3 is a whole different car in my opinion, and they just aint as fun.
it would be fun to have a vr6 tho :D

Enough of the Driver bashing! Or are we lowly Driver drivers not good enough for the elite group?
-
drivers are great, theyre the perfect car for those who cant afford the insurance on a Gti, anyway thers nothing poxy about a driver, with a few cheap modifications my one easily beats a mk3 from the lights.

So do pedestrians... :lipsrsealed: :lipsrsealed:
-
I got beaten off the lights by a freak gust of wind yesterday :(
-
Seen an awful attempt to modify a Mk3 today, from the front it looked cool, had badboy bonnet, mk4 styley lights, VR6 front spoiler, etc but then on the side it had M3 mirrors, M3 sideskirts (which didnt fit properly) Neon lights inside the car on the dash (how would you be able to see at night) and on the back it had some weird home made bumper from a load of guttering, sticky back plastic and a fairy liquid bottle, and a wonky twin 6" exhaust!!!
Like Haribo said, "some Mk3's look cool if done nicely, but some look totally cack!
Mk2's RULE! DRIVERS or GTI's
-
Crikey its like a civil war has broke in the golf gti camp.
Drivers are good, i had one for and only reason why i dnt have it now is coz i got a valver. (well i do still have it but dnt drive it)
I was thinking of putting twin weber 40's on my driver with a gti cam and gti down pipe, but ended up with a valver.
I do think that the driver that i had would of beaten an 8 valve mark 3 of the lights, just felt a bit more lively, top end then obviously the mark 3 would prove to be better.
End of the day we all buy cars for different reasons and get different things out of different cars.
We all have golfs and have different marks because of what we want out of the car itself, so each to their own.
-
Agreed. Each to there own, live and let live.. etc.. etc.......

Wot Him Sed, Amen!
-
in cant but feel partly responsible,i still dont like mk3`s tho
-
OK, a truce?!
-
at the end of the day we are all driving quality cars... not french sh*te!!!
-
My wife has a mk3 driver, she is happy with it, its great for getting the kids to school and doing the shopping. It does good mpg and has electric windows and sunroof etc.
I have a mk2 8v gti and its the dogs' i can drive it slow and get 35mpg or I can floor it and jump over hump back bridges. Nuff said.
-
thats my point too, the mk2 is virtually built to be ragged, its not the most practical car for shopping etc, which is what the world has mk3`s for
-
I find the MK2 rather practical tbh....Can fit all my camping gear and clothes etc for a week in the boot!! Plus it will easily swallow a weeks worth of shopping.ÂÂÂ
Only thing that really annoys me though is the spare wheel sticking out half a mile
-
And guess what - I've got a GTI and you've only got a poxy 'driver'! Was this forum 'Golfdriver.co.uk'? No? Well then.
That hurts Here *points to Heart* and Here *points to Head*
Mind you, I am willing to put my Mk2 golf drvier up against a standard 8V Mk3 on the track ( a real track not a drag strip) and see who wins!
-
Only thing that really annoys me though is the spare wheel sticking out half a mile
get a space saver spare wheel, no more than a tenner from the scrappy
-
get a space saver spare wheel, no more than a tenner from the scrappy
DOH!! Of course!! Then I'd need new carpet....where will it all end???
-
get the boot carpet whilst you are there getting the space saver.
-
you can tell it's monday can't ya??
Been in work for 2 and a half hours and my brain still ain't awake!! Not quite sure how i made it work tbh.....
-
Yeah i got up at half nine so i could be in uni for 11, now got an e-mail telling me my lecture is cancelled so don't have to be in till 12 now. Basts, could of had a extra hour in bed.
-
I got the life of luxury!
Currently unemployed, (i mean in between jobs)
Should be starting new job mid week......i hope!!!
Ahh, dont have to worry about getting up early, unless the missus wakes me up at the crack of dawn and starts fussing.....
As women do!!

its probably a 1.6.
late drivers with the 1.6 were always fast. had more problems despatching them in my 16v than 8v GTIs. don't get me wrong, they were no way as fast as the 16v but you couldn't be too complacent when you found a well driven late plate Driver.
the modified 8v probably wasn't pushing 130bhp. many of these performance modifications are nothing of the sort. at best hes probably got the same amount of power as the original engine head when it was new. engines lose power over time, and these modifications often do more than keep them at the same amount of performance as they originally had.
btw, no two rolling roads will give the same result. some are wildly inaccurate to "flatter" the punter ;-)
-
anyone got any idea what sort of torque the 1.6 and 1.8 carb engines got?? I know it ain't much but to put a figure on it would be nice
putting mine on a rolling road next month to see what its pushing out
-

GTI doesn't mean anything.
The word Injection in German actually begins with E (einspritzung), so it should of been GTE, but someone else was using that name. The end result is that they used I instead which meant absolutely nothing. Before someone says that I is for Injection - remember that the GTI was never developed for the British market. It was purely destined for the German market.
-

Not true really, as an engine puts on the miles it will actually be MORE powerful as it loosens up, providing nothing is excessively worn or damaged.
-
Just to add, i can't see how a carb engine could keep up with a gti in good running order.
I remember racing a friend in a scirocco gt against my vr, i left him for dead quite literally. However he wrote it off and bought a gtx, and that was very surprisingly quick off the blocks, even against the vr.
Saying that though, the scirocco gtx is the 1.8 gti in a mk1 golf shell, and it did have an audi throttle body/sports exhaust and a fast road cam.
-
I must admit, im not that wise when it comes to rolling roads. Seen a few of my mates put their RS Cossies and Turbos on them and im not convinced of the power they put out.
Do the rollers have resistance on them like a road would? and what about aerodinamics? is that taken into account? A car may have a recorded figure on the rollers but that means nothing in everyday driving conditions?
That my opinion anyway
-
I'll let you know what the score is when I put mine on in a few weeks!!
I don't think they do tbh. Remember seeing an article on an Audi RS6 and that reached over 200mph on a rolling road. On the road I think it was about the 175mph mark.
-
Rolling roaded my best mates Fiesta the other day at Interpro in Thornbury and it measured 194 bhp and 240 Ib ft Torque.
That was the figure at the flywheel, at the wheels on the road i expect it would struggle to put out 150 bhp
Still very very quick car though!
Shame about the blue oval!
-
Thats a lot for a fiesta, whats he done to it?
-
You should of asked what havent we done to it?!
1600cc bored to 1800CVH, lightened and balanced Crank, rods, Mahle Pistons, -31 actuator, port and polished head, stage 2 hybrid Turbo, green injectors, Pace alloy intercooler and radiator, aqua mist, 195 chip, ......i could go on and on!
The diaphram on the Actuator blew at 130mph and melted a 50p size hole in piston 3, so after a 3 year rebiuld (it took us that long cause were so busy doing other work) it was finished at 194bhp / 240Ib ft.
Looked like an original RS Turbo aswell and blows away twin-turbo Supras! 5th gear wheelspins?!!! Yep! £14.000 in reciepts!
So all these kiddys in ford magazines that say thier RS turbo with a K&N, exhaust and chip is pushing 200bhp is a load of crap.
Still, they all drive Fords at the end of the day!
Turbo'd rot boxes
-
What a waste of money
-
I know, but it does put a smile on your face everytime you drive it
The annoying thing is, my mate also owns an Audi A4 1.8T, a Mk2 Golf GTI 8v, and a Mk1 Golf GTI 8v. aswell as the Fiesta!
Lucky git!
-

Up to a point. Then it all goes south as the engine becomes worn out. And lets face it - what GTI hasn't been ragged to death?

your mate has got far too much bloody money for my liking!!!
-
Gradually getting rid of the cars and gonna spend the money on the Mk1 and Mk2.
The Audi Turbo is up for grabs at a cheap price.....check it out!

ay I've seen that advertised. Nice clean example. Would be tempted if I had any cash spare!! But saving for a house atm so I haven't
-
I know the feeling!
Want a house, want a nice motor, but the misses keeps on nagging when i spend time and money on the cars.
Still.......when is the misses ever right?!
-
LOL!!
My missus is the same....yet thinks nothing to going and spending £30 -£40 having her nails done which lasts about 3 weeks if she's careful :undecided: and yet has the cheek to say i waste money!!!
-
^^ want me to kill her? Ill do it for a fiver!
-
That would be too easy!!!
I thought maybe getting a rollcage fitted, strap her to it then go flat out round the track till she passes out!
She doesnt seem2 get that when im driving te car, i am in control....not her!!! God damn passenger drivers!!
-
I find something to stifle the women passengers always works well, like a apple, or your cock.
