Title: Car Insurance
Post by: Brenbo on 23 September 2017, 09:33
I have just recieve my new insurance quote from VW Insurance and it is extortionate.  More so than previous years.  For my Golf R which is one year old, perfect record on NCD, claims etc, and garaged overnight I have recieved a quote for just shy of £600.  I have looked online and the quotes I am getting from LVE and Aviva etc,. are around half this price with a better excess amount.

VW Insurance have also informed me they have mentioned to Alliance Insurance about their prices being too high but they will not budge, so they would not even check the amount they quoted and offer a small reduction to keep me as a customer.  I was told that is the quote and it ain't budging.  So I said right i'm off too get a better deal elsewhere.

So I am writing this thread to ask which insurers you guys would recommend to try and why, before I take the final plunge?   :undecided:

I used LV on my A3 but they wouldn't insure my GTI unless I fitted a tracker.
They are a good company though.
I now just use the cheapest I can find that is underwritten by a reputable company.
And switch every year because the robbing pricks show their customers zero loyalty!

I'm with Direct Line. The first premium was very competitive, they don't grumble with simple modifications nor charge if you need to amend your cover (which was the deciding factor for me). Bit miffed on renewal as my premium jumped though in fairness because of a claim in January complicated by being with a foreign registered lorry which still hasn't been resolved due to issues with identifying the insurer. Second claim  seems to be going much more smoothly.

In 35 years of driving, I've never once had a competitive quote from Direct Line.
It's obviously due to where I live but it's still bizarre.
I can use Saga now it's sad to say  but I found they are crazy expensive after the first year.

I’m insured with Aviva. I found them to be competitive on premium and excess, and they were willing to reduce my premium at renewal when I phoned and explained I could get cover cheaper elsewhere, so good customer service too, to retain an existing customer.

My brother is also insured with Aviva and recently had a claim and he found their claims service to be excellent, as were the repairs to his car; the Aviva approved repairer was also approved by his car manufacturer (I checked, and they are VW approved too).

At the end of the day, insurance is a necessary evil that we all need to buy, but the cheapest insurer isn’t necessarily the best (nor is the most expensive). Aviva weren’t the cheapest for me, but they were competitive and were prepared to be flexible on price to keep my custom, and based on my brother’s experience, have a good claims service.

Try Direct Line - straightforward and good value if you meet their customer profile.

I was with direct line for years until they attempted to double my mk5 GTI cover so went to Aviva, who then also went north.  So 2 years ago I went with Esure and then just yesterday I had to take out a new policy for the Mk7 GTI, based on 9 years NCD, living in London (not a posh part, but not a sh!t part), late 30s, and it was £350, before any extras, once you add motor legal, hire car, key cover, all the stuff you hopefully never need, which they kindly package up for you, it ended up at £450. I don't wish to get into argument about that £100 worth of extras being unnecessary, but the older I have got the more cautious I have become.

What I have learned is that if insurer has had a lot of claims on one particular vehicle, their system will automatically push the premiums up for everyone else, thats exactly what happened at direct line from what I understand.  A few big claims and everyone suffers.

On another note, my mum has a Polo and is with VW insurance, and she had a claim and they were excellent, and the bodyshop they used was top notch, amazing job, you would never know the car had been painted and I'm fussy.

The one thing you could do, is push your voluntary excess up, but it's a risk like everything else.

Many thanks for the info.  I have now just managed to get my insurance with Aviva for £297.  This is almost -£300 less than VW Insurance quoted (or should I say daylight robbery).

I tried to get VW Insurance to budge at least £1 on their quote and they said there is nothing i can do to get the quote to change.  I think there would have been more reaction from a brick wall.

I would have liked to stay with VW Insurance but lossing £300 more than I have just paid for car insurance would have been madness.

I'm with Admiral. Last year they hiked the price up considerably so I got a competitive quote from Direct Line, called Admiral and they ended up dropping the quote by about half to less than DL's quote.. This year the quote went up a bit, but comparison quotes were in the same ballpark so I stayed with Admiral.

That’s interesting Brenbo. On many of these motor manufacturer insurance products, the supplying insurer sets the net prices and the motor manufacturer then apply their commission mark-up. If the VW insurance product works this way (and it probably does), then they could have reduced their commission on your premium to reduce the price you were quoted in an attempt to keep you as a customer. IMO it’s poor that they weren’t prepared to do this.

Thats exactly as I thought.  But it seems they are saying their hands are tied this year?  I have always haggled prices (my father used to be in procurement so I got the knack for doing so from him). But if someone is not willing to budge an inch then there is not a lot I could do apart from look elsewhere, which I did and got £300 left in my pocket to boot.  Not a bad saving made this morning, I think!

It will be interesting to see what VW Insurance offer me next year to get me back?

Just got a renewal quote from Aviva for £270 and a quote online from LV for £200. Last year it was the other way round ! So off to LV and,no doubt, back to Aviva next year . If Aviva had been within £20 of LV I would have stayed with them. Hey ho

I was refused a quote from LV because of the pedalbox on my car. No matter how cheap they might've been, I'm not taking it off

When I had my GTI PP I resisted going with LV as they stated I had to have a tracker fitted on my car to get insurance with them.  Now I have noticed they don't?  I am expecting my Aviva insurance to go up considerably next year and I may go with someone else if it does.

My wife has just done her insurance in the last month with LV.  Even though she was with them before she didn't go with the renewal as it was way too expensive and then tried to go with LV as a new customer even though she had insurance with them already.  Apparently this year she was able to do this and saved £70 +/-  However LV had auto renewal on and had charged her twice for the insurance (both new customer and renewal).  But this was easily sorted in under a minute on the phone and the new customer insurance still stands with no questions asked.

I was getting quotes at about £330 mark when I was comparing quotes , however someone mentioned to try Aviva with there multi product discounts and I was pleasantly surprised as it was coming in at £196 , or £146 as they are doing £50 cashback via Quidco.

So needless to day , I didn't renew with Direct Line as they wouldn't budge from the £380 renew price.

Insurance seems to have rocketed up on these cars this year.
In 2016 I paid less than £200 for fully comp insurance for my R with a stage 1 map on it, upgraded non standard 19" wheels and a pedalbox.
This year my GTD (with DTUK box and pedalbox) was around £230 and my standard (plus pedalbox) Ed40 was around £270.

Every year you really have to do your legwork too.
LV used to be mod friendly, then they weren't. Then they wanted trackers, now they've decided they don't...
Other insurers I approached that had been mod friendly are currently not. Spacers were refused cover full stop with a few companies so I left them off. Pedalboxes seem to vary with cover depending on which member of staff you get.

Insurance has gone up in general mainly due to Dick Turpin sorry the government increasing insurance premium tax by more than double in the last 18 months. It pays every year to go on all the comparison sites and check if you can get cheaper and never ever just accept your renewal from your current insurer.

I've just renewed with Aviva too.  Their quote was more than last year, but to be fair all of the other quotes I was getting were higher than last year's equivalents.  Odd given I'd turned 25 in the meantime, another year of no claims bonus and no points on my licence but it is what it is!

Aviva cover anything fitted from the factory or at the dealership as long as it's on the invoice.  Plenty of other insurers don't, and you have to specifically declare your factory fitted options for them to be covered.  About 20% of the cost of my car was options!

DL would've been the same this year for me on renewal if it hadn't been for that pesky Romanian lorry driver and his dodgy Bulgarian insurer.... Between them they have cost me an extra £120  Some work colleagues were still amazed at my premium though as they were paying more for some fairly humdrum small cars.

Tell me about it.  My wifes car is a Citroen C1 and she has paid only around £60 less than I have for my Golf R.

I moved to Aviva last year as LV refused to cover the car without a tracker. This year they aren’t bothered about one. Market forces , I presume

Which car are you using your no claims bonus on?
