I am a wee bit nervous of the old handbrake situation on the car..........never had a car with no pull up handbrake my drive is on a hill and i have a fear of it rolling back into our other car
Any advice i know this is really silly but i feel tonight on collection this will not be explained well by Arnold Shark

In case of emergency, use the big middle foot pedal!

I meant more for when i am not in the car i know there is a wee lever in the centre console area is that what you click when you are parking and exiting the car
-
Just think of it as a mini handbrake lever - you pull it up to engage and the red brake light comes on in the dash.

Understood thanks guys

Leave the car in gear
-
I would say just leave Auto Hold enabled and forget completely about using a handbrake. I have had a GTI PP and Golf R MK7. Not once have I had to manually use the handbrake. Auto Hold is that good. I was a bit dubious about using it prior to getting my first performance MK7 Golf and I did have a few days of reaching for a handbrake which was not there. But once you get used to it you never pine for having a hand brake lever ever again.
Another thing to note, is if the handbrake fails the brake will lock on to avoid your car rolling off in to a wall or something similar.
After using Auto Hold, maybe I should say whats a handbrake?

Pull up hand brakes have problems too, in the fact if you get the rear brakes nice and hot then park up it's been known the car can roll when the brakes cool and contract, letting them roll, exactly the same with the new ones, if worried just learn to leave it in gear (as someone else has posted)
-
You don't ever need to actually put the handbrake on. When you stop the car will auto hold and when you turn the car off the handbrake will come on automatically. When you start the car and drive away the car will automatically release the handbrake.

I always leave in gear anyway so belt and braces it is :)

I'm with Brenbo in the Autohold camp. Autohold on always, except for times when you might need to make miniscule parking manoeuvres but even then I leave it on. I haven't touched the handbrake in my R since the first week of getting it. I daily have to park at the top of a hill at work and I've never come out to find my car at the bottom of the car park - it's always where I left it. If you use Autohold feature - on the lower DIS it will show green handbrake symbol to show AH is engaged for instance at traffic lights etc, and then when you park up it will show red handbrake symbol. So a quick visual check is all that's needed. I was a massive electronic handbrake sceptic prior to getting a mk7 - that lasted less than a day.
-
Was going to say that if you have auto hold on and press the start stop the handbrake goes on automatically
-
I was also an autohold/auto handbrake sceptic but it has been excellent! Once set up properly it really is a forget it system and it sorts everything out for you perfectly. The green handbrake symbol below the dials is autohold and when red the handbrake is fully on (usually only when you switch the engine off). The manual does also say to leave in gear too.

Ah! Yet another reason for DSG

Autohold is fine - even on steep ramps in multistory car parks.
I know its a bit of a leap to trust it, but do.
Basically you don't need to touch anything at all ever.... you'll notice it most when you jump in another car without it... I almost burnt the wife's handbrake out in her Fiesta after popping down the garage with it.... hmmm whats that burning smell... hmmm I did think it was a bit sluggish even for a 1.1 fiesta...

You and I both, but I couldn't imagine buying a car without it now! DSG/auto OTOH...
-
Funny really - my current and last Mk.7 were DSG but I have never used Autohold!

You can take your foot off the brake pedal when stoped if you use auto hold with DSG
-
If you don't use Autohold you are missing out on one of the best bits of tech on the mk7 imo. I'm afraid can't say the same about Stop Start.

Well yeah obviously but the point I was making was that VE changed it a few years ago. Before if you took your foot off the brake the the car would start moving, now it doesn't start until you touch the throttle.

PANIC.............pulled into the car park at work nose first on a hill reversing into the space into reverse bite point and up on its hunkers it went ??? handbrake engaged  so takes out of gear tried again back into reverse bite point and no budge so i end up hitting the AUTO LOCK button to switch the whole thing off reversed and parked fine engaged (pulled up the teensy lever) the handbrake switched her off and left her in reverse as i am not petrified i go and find her embedded in the side of the balloon shop
Am i being a total knob here and missing something ? i hadnt touched the handbrake at all i drove into the car park nose first on the hill tried to reverse and didnt budge :embarrassed:

Did you have your Seatbelt on? Germans love a bit of safety :D
-
You shouldn't have to touch anything so something that shouldn't be is either on or off. Check your handbook and set up again from scratch. Once sorted as I've said, you won't need to touch it again in normal driving.
-
As Watts says, you should not have to touch anything when Auto Hold is on. Even when reversing on a slope it should do all the hand brake stuff automatically. I have a really steep slope on my Driveway. Not once have I experienced anything like you describe. Auto Hold on my Golf works effortlessly on my driveway. I have even forgotten how much of a chore using a manual handbrake lever could be when pulling away on a slope.
So as Watts says you may not have setup your Auto Hold/eBrake correctly? I would check out the manual.

aaaahhhhhhhhhhhh possibly not i cant remember i am in the habit of taking off when reversing

I havent set it up as its a second hand car - is there a way to 'reset' things ?

Not as such, you just need to ensure the autohold is switched on and the handbrake button is in the correct position. Best way is just a minute or two with the manual and set them correctly then job done!

Can't ever remember it doing that to me in the Tiguan or Skoda superb with dsg. All it did when you took your foot of the pedal was start the car.

Yeah I was typing in a rush, I meant that the car would start, I mistakenly put moving. The way they have it now is you can take your foot off the brake pedal and the car won't start.
-
Turn the wheels and leave in gear even if the handbrake failed the car wouldn't move very far.
Relax and be confident when reversing back up a hill i told my dad to leave his new tiguan on the road untill he got used to the handbrake i got a phone call on the very day he took it home he had ignored me and the car was mm from the garage door
I calmly got in the car and reversed the car off the drive for him. :nerd:
