Hi guys,
Looking at getting a new R soon. Have been looking at the options list. Is the Pro nav worth the extra money?
-
I'd say no but it depends on your budget at the end of the day
-
I don't want to waste money unless it brings something extra other than a larger screen?
-
It's more responsive to touch than the old system
-
mmmmm not sure that's worth the extra 1200 pounds then.
-
Don't think any options are really worth it but I've had two mk7's and ticked the nav pro both times. It just looks nicer and finishes the dash off perfectly and you get voice control as standard and the hard drive too.
-
I would have said NO WAY but I sat into a new 7.5 R recently and it had the Pro and I was very impressed. Looked brilliant. Like a big shiny iPad in the dash. Nice and smooth with no physical buttons. Screen seemed really slick and responsive too.
But:
The standard radio screen is similar in size to the old screen so it does fill the dash much better now.
I've heard google earth/street view is not in the Pro anymore
The presence of a HDD or not is moot. Who goes to the bother of filling a hard drive with music anymore? Spotify all the way.
Voice control is useless in my experience.
So the only reason I'd spec it is for the slightly better appearance tbh. The step up from standard to Pro is definitely not as large as it was before.

I'd spend that £1200 on a new iPhone and still pocket about £400.
-
In the past, I've always upgraded the nav/tech pack. But this time round the Pro vs NonPro gap just wasn't big enough (imho) to justify the price difference.
If it was £500 or less, I might have considered it, but not at £1200
-
I'm really impressed with the standard discover unit in my 7.5 GTI, can't see how the pro could be £1200 better. The screen size is big enough to make the dash look great. The touch screen is a joy to use and the system/software is so responsive.
I'd stick with the standard unit and spend the cash on other spec if I were you.
-
With pro you can also disable gesture control...
Being serious, the voice controls actually work a lot better than the old Pro did. Whilst Android auto also features voice control, the built-in one does it without a data connection and can control things beyond phone and navigation.
-
Dont know if this is true, but I heard the Pro is the only one that enables you to use the Navigation map mode in the new electronic digital dash display at the same time as having it on the Pro head unit. I think the non pro can do only one or the other (probably due to system memory or processor speed).
Not sure if that's important to you ?

Stick with the standard Discover Nav and spec Dynaudio and save yourself £775.
What the Nav Pro does extra imo just isn't worth all that extra cash whereas if you like your music £550 on the Dynaudio is a no brainer !! First tick on the options list on my last four VW's and the first tick if I have another one too 👍

Exactly what I've done.

I've only got the standard unit it my 7.5 GTI and it's probably the best standard head unit I've ever come across.
The touch screen is really good. The touch and scroll responsiveness is more like an iPad than a clunky car radio. I haven't seen a pro in the flesh to compare but I'm happy with my choice.
Also remember the standard has 2 physical dials for volume and scrolling which are much easier to grab when you're trying to concentrate on the road too.
-
But there are buttons on the steering wheel that do volume and scroll
-
Does anyone know the pixel size for the mk7.5 discovery (non pro) screen?
-
ok thanks for the in-put.
The spec I'm looking at is:
Estate
Oryx White
Up rated sound
Rear cam
Black mirrors and bars
Heated front screen
Think I'll save some cash and leave the standard head unit

800 by 480
Pro has moved from that, to 1280 by 640

Have normal white, its only white. In fact have purple, its free.
Dynaudio, well, it already makes a sound and unless you've heard them side by side, you won't notice the difference.
Rear cam? It comes with mirrors
Black mirrors? They still do the same thing.
Heated from screen? It comes with a heater.
What I'm saying is that all of the "extras" are questionable.... your car does them all already.
-
it's called personalization Fred - making the car your own. Yes, we all know you don't get the money back on options, but if you are planning on keeping the car longer than 3 or so years, why not have a spec you really want and not one that you are constantly wishing you had added something to ?
If the OP can afford it, then why not ?

bet your a blast on shopping trips 😂😂😂

One of the first things I tick is the rear camera. For how much it costs it's an excellent option and well worth the money.
-
I love the rear camera and for the money it costs, you'd be mad not to spec it
-
Ya the rear cam is a must imo! Wouldn't be without. Video quality / clarity is brilliant on the new FL screens too.

One more good thing with the reversing camera is that it's hidden inside the VW badge. Not just from a visual point of view but a practical one. On my last two cars the cameras were permanently exposed so once winter came I was always having to clean them. Clever little design feature if you ask me.

What I meant was if NavPro doesn't add much, neither does pretty much any extra. You pay for it because you want it, not because its really any genuine use... go on, maybe a towbar because tying your caravan to the bumper with string definitely isn't police approved.

i got a tow bar, pull the handle and it swings out and just click it in place, most people ask what the little green light is for in the boot, shame I haven't got a trailer 😂😂😂, would be nice to try out the trailer assist tho
-
The standard unit is so slick. It seems it's possible to have two phones connected via Bluetooth at the same time too, which I don't believe is possible on the earlier MQB platform cars (like my previous Octavia vRS) without taking up the top media option.

I get what you're saying but the ones I want bring something for me.
I've had an Ibis white Audi and currently have a Pure White VW so Oryx is something a little different.
Read a fair few threads on other forums that the Dynaudio is fantastic. I feel for the price its a must have if I'm going to keep the car for a good few years.
Heated screen..... Well again, some thing I haven't had and would come in handy during winter months
Rear cam... just a handy thing to have with an estate type car
Black mirrors and bars.... goes with white better than the standard off chrome imho
Then you stuff like the Pro nav..... This would be the most expensive option and after reading peoples input I don't think just having a bigger fancy screen does add that much for me. The 7.5 can have the nav in the clocks so do you really need a bigger nav screen? No doubt it looks great but the standard at 8" will do.
Thank you guys for your input

hi ladies/gents.. i would imagine this has been asked before hence me asking here instead of a new post..
plus a search for sd cards goes back to 2013 :(
what sd card is best for the new nav pro? would this be ok? sry but i'm a bit tech stupid.. hehe :)

many thanks :)

Class 10 is the key. Size wise its up to you but 64gb will work just fine.
That one is a Micro SD though - you need a normal sized SD card or an adapter to take the micro SD - it might come with one.
I use micro SD with an adapter in mine.
