Title: Possible move to the GTI club
Post by: Sniffer77 on 05 September 2017, 19:49
Hi all
I'm currently looking to purchase a GTI - my budget is £17k plus my 2008 civic type r , so around £21k ish Had my civic from new and previous car was ep3 type r , so all in about 15 year driving type r's.

What can I expect for my budget guys? I had hoped to get 66 plate 5 door in white , manual preferably with low mileage (pp would be a bonus) am I being too hopeful with my budget ?

Am I also right in thinking the GTI comes with enough toys as standard ?

Thanks for any advance

Jamie

Jamie you should consider leasing the GTi as there are occasionally some great deals on offer. This also means it's a little more unwise to purchase as more lease cars coming to market can devalue the used models hence you may suffer more depreciation.

As regards standard spec yes they are well equipped hence again why they suit leasing. I'm waiting for a GTi , all I added was metallic paint and 19" wheels both very essential in my eyes as standard colour and wheels are poor.

Standard and extras is neither here or there buying second hand. Have a look on VW's website at their used cars and Autotrader to see what's available. Or stretch your budget to new? £24.7k on drive the deal for a new 5 door white basic car including any deposit contribution....

Oh and welcome to the forum!

You should take a look at the VW Used Car section, they've got quite a lot of cars on there.

Not sure if you'd get a 66 plate, but here's one example:

Like others have said, try CarWow or Drive the Deal for quotes?

Leasing works best if you swap regularly, cover average mileage or less, and don't add lots of options. If all three of those criteria suit you then it could be worth a look, but if you plan on keeping the Golf as long as you've kept your last Civic then you may find leasing expensive.

The Golf GTi is a pretty well specced car as standard, no need to go overboard with extras. 18 inch wheels, led/xenon lights, heated seats, sat nav and climate control are all standard. Later pre-facelifted 5 door cars also get keyless entry as standard.

Hi all
Thanks for the replies . Not really up for leasing as I do tend to keep the cars a fair few years especially if I really enjoy them . That's why I have had my most recent type r 9 years . To be honest it's spotless and hasn't missed a beat but I fancy a change .plus the Mrs leases her motors and don't want 2 lease cars .
I had looked at the dtd and other brokers and have seen the prices which are sadly just out of reach , especially with getting married in 3 weeks .
Was really hoping to get a 66 plate as it's the agreement with the boss that car is no older than year old .

Will keep scouring the classifieds to see if a bargain comes up . Feels like this £17k is burning a whole in my pocket 😂

VW must have removed 5 door facelifted gti's getting keyless as standard, wonder why they did that

I bought a 3dr white GTI with PP in March this year with 6000 miles on the clock for just over £22k. Mine was an ex demo from a dealer so I see no reason why you can't get what you're after.

You're budget seems about right. New plate is just out so could be just the right time to buy. 17 plate was just coming out when I bought, that's why I got a good deal on mine.

Got a 1k dealer contribution plus 2 free services and a years road tax thrown in.

I advise get down to your local vw and see what they have in stock.

That's exactly what I'm hoping for . Sadly I live in north Wales and local dealer here tends to be more expensive than if I travel few hours .
Just need to see something in the righ ballpark for me to try get a deal done . Luckily I'm not desperate it's more a want  👍🏽

Test drive the DSG now as if you do after you have bought a manual then you may well regret it. The DSG is like it is made for this car and matches up to it very well.

I'd disagree with the dsg comment but I am biased with having a manual.
Manual shift is really good in this car, and the dimpled nob is a pleasure to hold

I, too, went from a FN2 Type R. I loved that car but now have a MK7 R. The only reason I chose the R over the GTI was purely because I got a great deal on a new one earlier this year. I did try a DSG and whilst it's a fantastic gearbox it just didn't feel as engaging as a Manual.

You won't regret getting the GTI though. I always thought my Type R was quick and nimble but was amazed - and still am - with the Golf.

Have fun with the search.

Nice to see a former fn2 owner still happy with the vw. Number of people on the fn2 forum saying for me to keep my type r.
The golf r is awesome to be fair , on my budget I'd have to gol older which I don't want to do . Love the sound of the golf r even just cruising past at low speeds

I'd owned my Type R for 6 years or so and would only change it if I found a car that was just as much fun. I've had a 1.6 and 1.9 205 GTI previously plus a few other hot hatches and so still like that feel of the hatch and that, thankfully, continues with the Golf. Yep, I do love the sound of the R - that alone puts a smile on my face.

Go and have a test drive of a few Golfs and I'm sure you'll love it.

I have had 4x Civic Type-R's and the first time I drove my GTI PP I knew it was the best thing I had ever done in regards to cars I have owned.  I absolutely loved my Type-R's but found the GTI even better.  I now own a Golf R and this is the best car I have ever driven.  Although I still have a soft spot for Type-R's I can promise you will not regret moving over to a performance golf.

Well tried to get test today and was basically fobbed off saying there sale day was for new cars so there a bit busy . Big dissapointing but never mind.
Out of interest would you guys say performance pack is essential ? And has anyone bought the solid black version ?
Reason I ask is I'm trying to figure out if I can sneak a new one from drive the deal etc , as 66 plates seem too expensive like 2k difference

I have never driven a PP car but I wouldn't say that it was essential. I would say that it is a great bargain for what you actually get and if you are going for DSG it's more attractive because of the 7 speed DSG that is added.

If you spend most of your time in straight lines on the motorway then IMO you'd be better off getting a vanilla GTI and spending the cash on a decent remap and a few nights away with the Mrs. But if your budget comfortably allows it then go for it as you will have the best factory order GTI you can buy right now.

Mine is a PP and I doubt I've ever had the benefit of it but these cars are more about want than need so I wouldn't worry about it just get the best deal you can for the spec you want. And enjoy

The solid black version (the 'free' / no extra cost paint colour) isn't actually black. Black Rubin is is a mauve/ purple colour and IMO is certainly a Marmite colour, and probably not a popular colour either. YouTube video of a Black Rubin Golf GTI below;

Avoid the Black Rubin aka purple, it's a dire colour only popular with lease cars who don't want to pay a bit extra to upgrade. Sell whatever you need to find the extra £500 for metallic or even less for the excellent Pure White.

PP not essential either. Nice for sure but not worth the extra for me as it's my wife's car.
