Title: Service person lied.
Post by: cyclopops on 10 June 2017, 18:52
My car went in for its 30k service and on the check sheet it says "Spare - tread depth ok, pressure = checked, new space saver"
Sounds ok right? Until I tell you that it's a full size wheel, tyre that I purchased and it's got 6mm of tread left.
So clearly didn't check it.

Now my question is, do I report it to the service dept?

I would bother, although what else did they 'not check'?

I got a video from the dealer the other day and they checked the tyres and said that the fronts had 3mm thread left, they actually have 4mm left, now that is something to get mad about when you're talking about Bridgestone's

My OH's Lupo went in for a service with VW a few years back and they phoned to say it was due an aircon service. She should have said yes to see what they would've done as the nearest it has to aircon is opening windows

every year my vw retailer would say you need new front wipers, i'd say again they'd say yes. i did this for two or more years the next year they said the same so i pointed out that they replaced them every year for two or more years, she then said oh ok we'll do them for free. yet they still don't clean the window properly.  now did the lie or just forget i'm not sure, but i'd think this sort of thing might happen more than we'd like to think it does :)

It does kind of point to one of those situations where the servicing 'techie' was being a bit lazy knowing that 90% of owners never look at their spare so they didn't bother either. And I expect the servicing 'technicians' are on a bonus for their turnover too.
If you report it they'll just claim that the 'technician' just made a typo or something was lost in translation from his notes to the invoice and it's "just one of those things, an easy mistake to make".
However you pay top dollar for dealer labour rates, you assume they have the latest and best training and know that they have all the latest VW gear on hand yet this is one of the basics of servicing and more importantly a safety critical situation.
The fact the car has 30k on it shows that it works for a living and is not just a little UP! that grandma takes down the shops twice a week so something safety critical is not something you'd want to overlook (and obviously being as the car is your livelihood and you knew it wasn't a space saver in there and did check up on it).

I think we all know that if it's a bigger dealership and you complained then they'd send an email out to all the techies to double check they're doing all they're supposed to do and if it was a smaller dealership the workshop manager might have a quiet word with the techie and then all would be forgotten again.

It's a good word of warning to all that you can't rely on service personnel necessarily and that's not trying to taint those that are professional about their work; even the best of us can overlook the odd thing - but they're doing basic work off a check sheet.

It's a very good idea to run a full sized spare though.

I wouldn't have thought the Tech lied, its more likley he selected the wrong option when he created the service sheet.

Servicing is just at expensive car wash and yes they always say tyres have less depth ( I wonder why ) I measure mine with a vernier gauge and have had several disputes with the notes 'new tyres due soon'. Truth is most folk fall for it like the brake fluid change con.

I took mine in for a service ("free"via service pack) and on the video the VW dealers send you the tech says everything is great, one thing to bear in mind, the tyres are on 7mm so you might want to have a think about those. All 4 were 1 week old Michelin PS4's.

So if it was an elderly lady and she went for it and said yes, please fit me 4 new tyres, would they rip her off do you think?
