Title: Clubsport S on new series of Top Gear THIS SUNDAY, WOO HOO!!
Post by: volkswizard on 01 March 2017, 11:13
Top 12 preview of next Top Gear series which starts soon shows Sabine and Rory in a Clubsport S at the 'ring at number 10.

It's the grey (yes grey!) German press car that did the rounds here in the summer confusing everyone as they only come in red/white/black.

Some may have seen the vague You Tube footage of this car in the paddock at the 'ring in October.  The support cars were UK reg but it wasn't specified who was making the film, now we know.

Should be good!

The trailers look rather good for this series and I am looking forward to it as it looks a bit more car focused now that GT was

Sabine at the helm of the CSS should be good fun to watch

Sabine in a CS-S at the Ring ... I wonder if she's going to have a crack at Benny's Lap Record - she would probably break it given the right conditions - let's just hope the reviews are positive in comparison with her own mule, the 997 GT3 RS !!!

private sale prices  for CSS  on pistonheads making dealers prices a  absolute joke at the moment the model is not an appreciating asset at anything over the 40k....    It was when they first came out in december  now its not, prices will recover  may take some time for the ones sold for 45k and above and there where a few.

Watching the show now. The sound is terrible!

Edit: So the CSS is a 2 seat track car. Was it really able to keep up with those other cars? Hmmmm.....???

... why don't they have Sabine as one of the Top Gear presenters? I like Joey (Matt Leblanc)... Chris Harris ... I get that. Who is the other guy? They are trying to form another trio. Does that last guy have the personality?

Er... I didn't watch the last series. She was a presenter.

The other guy did a review in 2014 of the GTI PP which both my wife and I thought, after watching countless others, excellent. I believe he had his own youtube channel but I can be corrected on that. I reckon after last season they have a decent set of presenters. Jesus even the Mrs enjoyed it.

Here it is - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylROYGM-eQE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylROYGM-eQE)

Good enough review, but Top Gear is as much about the presenter personalities as it is about the cars. This guy doesn't have the screen presence for a show like Top Gear. He would be better on the Gadget Show. Though I suppose the same could be argued for James May. :undecided:

Ok so i also saw the Club Sport last night , but there is NO WAY, i dont believe it!!! that the Golf CS is better an faster then the GTR, I'm a golf fan, i have a GTi myself, an they are great cars,  i dont have the CS,
but i am a massive fan of the GTR an i just dont believe its faster.

Even i think Joe said it at the end, the reason why the golf done so good was cause it had Sebine at the wheel, she lives at that place , think she knows that track better then anyone in the world. an Fair play to her, she drove like a animal, great driving.

but anyone else, no way, no way faster then a GTR.
When i saw it over take a GTR i just started laughing

anyway hope you all have a nice day

The CS is a cracking car, I'm sure the CS-S takes it one step further.

Here's the real reason for the giant-killing

Agree, I've been on a good few track events and I've seen plenty of people 400+ bhp cars but they only have the talent for less than half that power. As for top gear last night, it was staged I think. Although that E36 3 series could have been a 316 but even if it was an M3 the CCS should be able to slater it.

The CS&CSS are stunning cars and I would love one.

I didn't think the review was up to much to be honest. It was entertaining watching Sabine go round the ring but half the cars she passed looked like they were just cruising round rather than on a hot lap. When it cut back to the studio afterwards it was just plain awkward as none them seemed to know what to say.

I actually turned the tv right down when they were going around the track because of the annoying screaming.

I have to agree iv just watched it and it looks like most of the cars she past were braking and moving over as already said must av been staged not very good for the other manufacturers tho having to slow up to show a golf beating them

They said at the start that it was a normal "pay as you go" day, so most of the other cars will have been on their first or second laps, maybe a few more. None of the drivers will have been round the thousands of times Sabine has and they all, at least tried, to observe the rules about faster cars approaching from behind.

The thing to take from the "test" is that she thought the CSS was easy to drive, like a go kart - and she was quick! The £1.2m worth of supercar thing was just poking fun. It was Sabine that did that, and she could do it all day long.

+1 Just to add, Sabrine was driving a VW press car. I suspect that all the other drivers were driving their own vehicles and perhaps taking a little bit more care of their machinery. Also I suspect there could have been some meeting before the 'race', that the BBC were filming and they would be most appreciative that other drivers would move out of the way? Just a thought

They said at the start that it was a normal "pay as you go" day

I haven't watched it all again just to check this but when they cut to the 'ring Paddock, Rory says "this is a typical German track day" which is not "pay as you go" touristenfahrten (tourist driving).

The marshall in the barrier is just waving people through which doesn't happen on a tourist day as drivers have to put tickets into the slot.

Plus if you've been to a tourist day you will notice that there are far too few crap or even average cars in the paddock shots, many (but not all) people with good sense and good cars  only drive the 'ring when it's a closed track day and the standard of driving is higher.

I agree I think it was a bit false and someone like Chris Harris will be hating all that seeing as he is a hardened factual car journalist primarily but as entertainment for the masses goes it was perfect as everyone keeps on telling me.  I even told my 85 year old mum to watch it!

The real less exciting point of the film should have been a far less sensational message that an average driver will be able to drive the 'ring quicker in a CSS than a Lambo or 911 or probably even an M3 because it's a narrow bumpy circuit more suited to a powerful hot hatch for anyone other than expert drivers.

Imagine the complexities of trying to turn this into a film and you can see why it morphed into such a factually dubious but enjoyable nonetheless bit of TV.

However as a GTI owner for the last 21 years it heartens me to see the GTI getting such praise on a TV programme with such a massive global audience which can only mean good things for the future of the GTI in what is a very uncertain motor industry and that can only be good for anyone who is a member of this forum.

If you remember the bad old GTI days from 1992-2004 seeing the GTI back at the top of the tree is even more poignant, WELL DONE VW!

^^^I think you are right.

It's good news for VW in a wider sense too, after all the negative press, for something as big as Top Gear only talking positives (albeit about a car that was limited production and sold out long before they talked about it!). On the other hand, who actually needs to be told that Golf is the best hot hatch? Not just us here, but every group test will tell you the same. Any haters are probably driving something else :D

BTW, I rather like the new TG. Its got much more "car stuff" and whilst still is funny, I think they've lowered the stupid content to just select pieces (eg pressure washers or muck spreaders). I even like Star in a Reasonably Fast Car, whereas before I used to fast forward through the old one.

Harris is definitely why I am enjoying it more, he brings some serious gravitas to the show.

It works for me, long may it continue.

That's two out of two last posts I agree with you on. Personally I would of rathered Chris Harris have tested the CCS on his own and on road here in the U.K. and maybe a track like Cadwell

OK, happy to be corrected by experience. No, I haven't been, but a friend of mine went round on his bike. less said about that, the better, but suffice to say that he went off at one corner and ended up back on the track further round! He loved it, but it could have been disaster!

Despite what you say, the other cars circulating are not being seriously driven - maybe they were tourists who got a free lap for behaving while the BBC were filming.

Agree that the CSS is important for the brand. It proves that, while VW are not in the game of chasing power, or hard core handling, at the expense of everyday practicality or comfort for their mainstream cars, they could beat all comers, if they so wished, and with a more accomplished car.

The point being that in the right hands ... e.g. Sabine - the CSS is as good a performance car as anything. This sentiment resonated at ECOTY where the Clubsport S was quoted to be on a twisty road as fast as any car on the test including Lambo's / R8's / McLaren ... hence its runner up placing to the best sports car in the world the 911R ... this unanimous opinion that the CS-S is an incredible Point to point B road and track day car is exactly the publicity VW were looking for when building and designing the Clubsport S as a 40th birthday present, which all bodes well for the lucky owners 👍

Except no one in the world is as good around the N'ring as Sabine - no one.  So the "test" was massively skewed and a load of old tosh to be honest.  Plus the cars she "passed" were clearly slowing down and not trying in any way.

But, as someone pointed out earlier, good press for a Golf means hopefully VW will continue making fast Golfs to the same quality in the future - which benefits us all.

Not arguing but I seen her racing in the WTCC a few years ago around the old ring and she must have been having a bad day because from memory she wasn't that good. Not saying she isn't a fantastic driver but she's not the best.

She was probably having a bad day, she was born and raised at the ring and has done more laps than anyone on the planet (I'd imagine).  The point being however is that the whole test was nonsense (other than to show that the Golf is a decent track car), even if you don't know who she is and her skill level, you could see the other cars slowing down and not using anywhere near the power available to them.  I think there was one shot of her catching up one of the Porsche's on a straight - utter b0llocks, even if she got a better exit out of the previous corner there is no way she would be able to catch it in a straight line!

1) She's too old - she's 47 FFS, older than me!
2) She's too heavy (Benny Leuchter who set the record(s) is a streak of piss and is 28 years old)
3) She's too expensive - give a new driver a chance to make his name or give an established the name the chance to earn a fortune? Easy choice.
4) She's already in bed with BMW as she drove the official BMW 'ring taxi, you do not get anyone who isn't 100% on brand message to do something this important.  Seat used one of their TCR drivers, Renault used a Renaultsport test driver, Porsche used Marc Lieb a works WEC driver.

I find it quite fascinating how "normal" drivers critique a racing driver with Sabine's pedigree - most of us would be crying for our mummy's if Sabine took us round the ring or indeed any racetrack in her GT3 RS yet when one of the best drivers in the World of media and racing goes round the Nord"ffe in a car that we love and was specifically designed for that track that is as fast as an old GT3 we say it's all rubbish. Top Gear has been stretching the truth for at least 10 years ... we take it with a pinch of salt! But still the truth remains that she would easily Best any of these cars with the likes of you and me driving, sure if Sabine was driving the RS she would probably Best anyone in the World on that track but she was driving the legendary Clubsport S ... a humble golf that can mix it with the big boys at 4 times the price, hence the idea behind the whole VT ... just like ECOTY the CS-S has been praised as one of the best sports cars in its price bracket of the last decade and in many ways any price bracket. Would I swap my GT4 for my Clubsport S ... of course not, as it was actually an ECOTY Champion but in many ways the CS-S carries similar DNA and is a true "go kart" as Sabine says. For anyone looking for cheap GT Porsche like ownership the CS-S has that same feeling of ownership at a third of the price, which is and was exactly the design brief 🎯👍

What is the best way to get coffee stains out of an apple leather case? That is the funniest answer I've seen on here ever, estate car of the year

Thank you Gulfstream11

Still a huge Sabine fan as she makes it look so casual with her banter

Very easy to get mugged at that place when you are still learning, you tend to over brake for corners and then are just a sitting duck till you get back up to speed but great TV

Also I do feel the pay versus play comes into force with your own car

I would like to drive one of these over the downs from Winchester to Goodwood which I always think is a decent run to challenge a car

Someone please f**king remove this guys ECOTY magazine from him before he does some permanent damage to his wrists.

Dude, there is no doubt that the CS-S is a really good track car - but as a daily it falls woefully short (no back seats, armrest etc etc) - and to call it legendary is pushing the boundaries of sanity a little too far.  No one in their right mind would have one over any Porsche if money was no object, there is no comparison, regardless of how quick it can go round the ring (because it's been basically stripped to save weight).  Come on, it's getting a little bit fanboy in here!  You are starting to sound like R400 on the R forum who thinks the R is the quickest car the world has ever seen

Looking down the list of fastest laps round the Ring, I get down to a BMW M5 before I find a car which is actually a car you'd be able to live with as a form of day to day transport.

The others are all track/race things or that won't make it over speedbumps and have the lack of comfort and convenience of a daily driver.

Quite impressive really that a big old barge like that is the fastest of "proper" roadgoing cars on a race track.

Fanboy ... I would disagree regarding the "daily" ... as many are "daily drivers" on this site! RFL at £180 and Ins at £230 and 35Mpg i would say thats a perfectly acceptable daily, but i do accept that if you want 4 doors its not a daily and/or back seats, so this point is purely subjective!

Regarding its "Legendary status" that context is based on Price ... I have a GT4 and a new GT3 allocation so am familiar with Cost Versus ownership enjoyment and as i said, would not swap my GT Porsche for a CS-S but the cheapest you will find a well specced GT4 is nearly 3 times the Clubsport Price, so as i said many times i think its a good car and a great substitute for a GT car but on a more stringent budget. What do you want me to say about the car ...? Its got no back seats and can't get the kids in so therefore its rubbish and therefore its not a feasible Golf ... this is crazy! Its a stripped out 40th Birthday present to Gti owners around the World and its a cracking little car ... as i am sure the R is or the normal Clubsport but i can't comment rightfully on these cars as i have never owned one ...!

I believe by the nature of the limited build this has naturally created a split decision amongst owners and enthusiasts ... I have not once criticised any Golf as they are a phenomenally successful little car and in any of its forms and functions does a great job as either a 4 door diesel chugger or a Gti sports car or a 4WD Winter daily or as a Track and B road blaster ...

So lets get back to the thread and comment on the little "Go-Kart" ....

I enjoyed the feature myself, even though it was tongue in cheek to say the least.  But the new series so far has been pants.  The presenters are terrible, in hindsight I'd rather have Chris Evans back!

He got perma-banned for something fairly trivial in the end. He was trolling and winding people up for 2 years and then suddenly got hit with the ban hammer.

I wouldn't waste the CSS on daily drudgery but it is a perfectly usable car for a daily, there are plenty of cars that only have 2 seats that people use daily and they rarely have such a big boot as the CSS (i.e. TT Roadster (diesel if you must), SLK (again diesel), Cayman, Boxster, BMW Z4 etc etc).  As for needing an armrest to be capable of being a daily that is a very subjective choice.

The only caveat is the Cup 2 tyres which are marginal in winter at best but then again in Germany by law you have to run winter tyres on each and every car and it's sensible here too.

I've had a Golf R and it's a great car but it's not even worth comparing it to a CSS as the philosophy behind them is so different.  As a weekend car to savour every moment driving the CSS is absolutely unbelievable, the Golf R is no doubt a more rounded proposition but I don't want that, I want a more visceral, exciting experience and I can't believe I am getting that from a car with a VW badge on the front of it

People may mock ECOTY but surely the fact that so few VWs and even Audis have made it to the shortlist says something about the CSS?  I don't think daily usability was high on there priorities though so if that is high on yours you might be better off with What Car?

Isn't it funny, someone being called a fanboy about a GTI on a GTI forum..

Not sure why people honk about the S not being an every day car because it only has 2 seats FFS

Unless you need it as a family car it's easily an everyday car....why not?

The CSS is a perfect daily for me. I only want two doors and I rarely carry anyone in the front passenger seat so zero requirement for rear seats. My suitcase fits in the spare wheel well and does not roll around. The car is almost invisible on the road so I can nip about without attracting any attention. It's almost free to run when you take depreciation into account, it is a delight to drive and puts a massive smile on my face.

How could it possibly be a better daily driver? (For me!)

My point it is - everyone has different requirements. I remember all the same arguments about the R26R. I enjoyed mine for 4 years and wish I never sold it even now. I will not be selling the CSS.
