Hi all,
Im looking at purchasing a MK 6 Golf GTI, Ive been looking for about a month now but they seem quite rare for the spec I want. Looking to spend around 11-13k and Im pretty sure I want it in white, maybe I would consider red too. Defiantly has to have 18" Monzas, and leather seats, preferably heated. Would really like the nav system too, but I suppose I could always upgrade to that? No more than 50k miles, less preferably. Struggle to find cars that match this within 100 miles of the Manchester area. Ive been stung on car purchases before so playing this one very careful.
Do you think I am making a wise decision?
Is it possible to upgrade to the nav system should the car not come with one quite easily?
What common issues should I look out for? Ive seen something about the timing chain tensioner failure, and the costs involved which has got me quite worried.
Appreciate any help and feedback,
Ben

If you get an early car it may still have the dodgy chain tensioner, if there is no proof of its replacement with either the later type tensioner or a new engine (after its failed) then you must assume it hasn't been sorted. I'm not sure what the cost to replace it is, i think around 500 but mine had already got a new engine in it. Remember to get a good car (thats the hard bit) 18" monza wheels can be fitted afterwards.
Mine was 6 years old when I got it, i paid 12000 and it had 74000 miles. But it doesn't have the cam chain issue and was full vw history with 18" monza wheels.

Thanks for the feedback,
Do you know which year the issue is with? Is it just the 09/59? If so I will avoid these. Hoping for 10 plate + anyhow.

Check out the 'sticky' in this (the mk6) section of the forum relating to tensioner failures. There have been a number of revisions to the design of the tensioner up to (I think) 2012, so 2010 cars will be affected.

Hopefully something will come up with that spec, I think mine might be going up for sale soon but not too soon, but it's currently sitting on 80,000 and has tartan (miles better than leather in my opinion!)
As for the tensioner personally I would't touch an 09/10 if it has not had this done or isn't on a new engine. If of course it fits your spec then I would have the new tensioner fitted ASAP. I think it is about £500, info will be in that thread that's been linked so just include this in your budget!
DONT RISK it if it goes then you will be slapped with £5,000 bill and I doubt VW will care with it being out of warranty. This could be mitigated however if you buy from VW then you will get the 12 month and if so I would get them to acknowledge that this will be fitted for FREE if it happens.
Nav system can be retro fitted no issues there!
No other problems really some people say there was an issue with the inlet manifold in early 09 cars but I'm personally yet to see this issue in mine so perhaps Iv'e been lucky. I mean the only issue I had was the tensioner which resulted in a new engine but in the last 5 years of ownership NOTHING else has gone wrong. Car runs perfect so can't argue with that really! It's worth noting however mine is stock so some issue can come to light when running higher BHP!
Look out for white worm on the Monzas also, it's likely the car will already have it on, mine does now on all 4, to refurb them your looking at £80-£120 per wheel!

Thanks for all the feedback guys,
Ive actually just purchased one today
It was advertised at a little more than what I wanted to pay but it hit all the specs I wanted baring the heated seats, which I can live with and I received more than I was hoping for on the trade in so it was a no brainer. It is actually from Leeds too. The garage has hundreds of good reviews and all looks good. 46k on the clock its a 61 plate so should avoid the tensioner issue? I also opted for the 3 year extended warranty, it covers mostly anything up to 2k for 3 years and you can claim as many times as you like, obviously apart from the wear and tear. It was pricey for the warranty but having been stung before it gives me massive piece of mind, do any of you guys have warranties?
Few minor issues I had, there were a few chip stones on the front but being white it doesn't show up much, there was one that had had a bad job of being touched up done to it but I could get that sorted out for not too much, there was a few hairline scratches also which I could sort out if I wanted too.
Another issue which stood out was on the test drive, the car had very little fuel in, in fact it had 0 miles and the guy put a bit in with the funnel for the test drive and after giving it a bit of beans we came to some lights, when stopped the car started to lose revs then gain revs and make a funny noise. I looked at him and he said its likely just the lack of fuel, the fact its been stood for a while etc and just needs some proper fuel in and a good drive. It does sound legit and I suppose if there is any issues I am covered by warranty. Has anyone come across this?
Its getting a service, aircon service, Brake pads changed and valet before I pick it up. Cant wait to get the plate on it and get it out.

Get some pics up when you can!!
It might be the case that it was running a little rough if petrol was so low. Happened a few times in my old golf when petrol was low (maybe gunk in the petrol) so now I never let petrol get too low
Might just be mind over matter though
Good that you got a warranty tbh as you never know with cars these days and im quite risk averse so prefer paying for a warranty just for piece of mind
Heated seats are nice to have but tbh I don't use mine that's much.

Enjoy  The warranty is sensible for a high performance car.

Cheers Guys,
Pics will go up as soon as I get hold of her
I take it its not possible to add heated seats? Thats the only downside really, would have been nice at 5am on the way to work in the winter!

Congratulations on your new car. You've said that it hit all the specs you wanted (barring heated seats) and leather was one of your requirements. If you've got leather trim, you should have heated seats as they are standard with leather.
You'll be able to tell from the rotary controls on either side of the heating / ventilation control panel; the 2 rotary controls will have a heated seat symbol in the middle of them.

If the car was specced with leather seats from the factory it should have heated seats as standard as the above poster has said. My CSG MK6 GTi has leather and has the heated seats.
I remember buying a new mk4 GTi Turbo for the wife back in 1999 and heated seats was part of the leather upgrade option. I believe that's always been the case with Golfs, you spec leather and you get heated seats thrown in as part of the package. I'm almost 100% certain that if you spec leather from new i.e. a factory order the heated seats come with that option.
If the car you're buying hasn't got heated seats it may be that the leather interior is a retro fit.

Well thats even better then! I forgot to look for myself, then as I was leaving I just mentioned oh btw do you know if it has heated seats, he said he wasn't sure but didn't think so. I imagine he didn't know so didn't want to give any false promises. Pretty sure its factory fitted so should have the option
I will find out for sure when I pick her up on Sunday
