Hi all, i'm looking to buy a new GTI PP and definitely want a DSG as i do a lot of miles in traffic, is it really that much worst on MPG over the Manual?
I had a M235i on extended test drive and only my commute a 65 mile round trip mostly motorway will stop start traffic either end managed 31MPG, based on this and the cost £34k with discount i'm thinking a GTI would be more suitable £27K and and better fuel economy.... however most of the references about the decent economy on the GTI seem to be on the manual, i've seen people saying 40+ on a run... i don't think the 235 would of ever got to 40.
anyone had both manual and DSG that can comment of the real world differences?
i've been trying to get an extended test drive and both Leicester & Derby don't offer them, i don't understand who'd spend £30k+ on a car with just a 20 minutes trip round the block with a sales guy sat next to you!
-
Its typically about 5mpg better for manual, which doesn't sound like a lot, but as a percentage its a fair bit and when you apply that to your annual fuel bill, its quite a lot. I don't think you'll see anything like 40mpg in the conditions you describe though.
On the other hand, if you do drive a lot in urban traffic at rush hour, the DSG will be a definite plus.
Hopefully soon the new DSG boxes will deliver equivalent MPG.
-
I am averaging very low 30's in my PP DSG. It is possible to get 40mpg on a run but you need to be very smooth to get it.
The mpg is increasing the more miles that I'm doing, it's gone up about 5mpg since it was new and I'm on 10k now.
-
I picked my non PP manual gti up on fri did about 270 mile round trip to the coast mainly motorways but a & b roads average was 37.5 at 70mph with a few bursts right foot planted n grin factor  I'm happy with those figures guessing will get even more wi chilled drivin lol
-
After 30,000 miles my long term average mpg is 37-38. Bare in mind mine is a non-PP GTI with DSG.
The vast bulk of my milage is on motorways and in heavy traffic.
Hope that helps.
-
I found is strange that the Golf GTI Manual mpg is worser than the DSG version yet it's the other way around for the Golf R, DSG gives better mpg on the R.
-
I've owned my GTI PP DSG for 6 months now and average fuel economy is around 30-31mpg. I always refill to the top and generally the refill light comes on around 300 miles. My regular commute is 12 miles each way in stop/start traffic with average mph around 30. Even when I've done longer trips the mpg only rises a little bit - got 350 miles out of one tank.
-
Pp dsg and getting 34/36 mpg mostly. Commute mix of country roads and main A roads .Done 7000 miles in seven months and noticing mpg getting better .On a long run ,main A road or motorway ,get nearer 40mpg .Must admit giving it the beans really drops the average...but you have got to expect that. Love the car and happy with the mpg .

I can't comment on the differences to manual, but my DSG PP short city commute is below.

The decent MPGs were on west coast road trips.
With regards to test drives, I saw a white PP in the showroom while looking at another car and bought one without a test drive 😂
-
thanks all, sounds like i really need to get that test drive sorted! has anyone else got experience in getting extended test drives? is this a VW thing? BMW and Porsche i've bought from before have both been more that willing to let you have a car all day or indeed overnight.
if i'm getting 35+ on my commute that would work mentally, i'm not fussed about it dropping on a hoon, i just don't want to spend all my regular driving concerned about MPG. really don't want to have another diesel if i can help it!
interesting about the comments on the improvements over time, my wife tiguan has improved massively over the years, its now on 22K and easily gets into the hugh 30's low 40s when driven normaly - its the 180 4 motion TDI, when we first got it i was abit worried as it was much more high 20's to low 30s in the same conditions

A wee bit off topic mate but what was the 235 like aside from the mpg?

A wee bit off topic mate but what was the 235 like aside from the mpg?
it was pretty good, i'm currently in a 120d m sport so ergonomically it wasn't much different, but performance wise it was epic, its a very fast and capable car, handling was really good, my 120d is a bit tail happy in the wet and really crashy (m sport suspension) the 235 was like a different car in this respect, it was a wet day when i had it but grip was so much better i put this down to the non runflats on the 235 and possibly the influence of the auto box. If you could have only one car it'd be hard to beat to be honest, my only real criticism(other than MPG) was that it was really quiet(sound symposer aside - which i don't like), however the MP exhaust sorts this out i'm led to believe and only costs about £700.
if i had the money then i would get one without question, however i can't justify the cost with my other toy (F430).

Thanks very much for the feedback. Much appreciated. I am tempted by the 235 but will hold off to see the 240 when it appears.
F430 wow . Would love to see a few pics of that
-
yeah u can get some great discounts on the 235 at the moment, theres a guy on the babybmw forum undercutting all the online brokers and seems to be a really good guy to deal with too! shame theres no-one in the VW world doing the same, ordered my Tiguan from DTD as no-one seemed interested in getting near that price a my local VW, they need to wise up - BMW have put this guy on full time dealing with online enquiries from enthusiasts forums, as the internet opens up more of this kind of seller to the mases these kind of guys who site behind their desks ripping of grannies are going to struggle to hit their sales targets in the the new world. the guy from my local VW couldn't even be bothered to call me a back with the PCP quotes!

heres a few pics of the 430, i bought it just before my missus got made redundant, shes now setting up her own business so cash flow is an issue, i'm desperately trying to hang onto it hence why i'm concerned about costs on my daily(i'm not rich by any stretch of the the imagination!) before anyone states the obvious ;)

A what, £90k impractical car, and you're "not rich" lol
I've often wondered just how much money people have to have before they call themselves rich... I guess I've just notched it up a few ;-)
-
That is one gorgeous F430, love the reg plate. I think I know the chap you are referring to on the BMW who seems to do a great job with his discounts. There are a few dealers on here but no dedicated online sales unfortunately.

Sorry but I don't quite get it, your commute is 65 miles a day and I'm guessing five days. Let's say the difference between a DSG and manual is no more than 5mpg(DSG-30mpg/manual-35mpg) that makes a difference of under £8 a week but you yet you have 430 and are buying a GTI PP
-
You don't get rich by throwing your money away. If you are careful about where your money goes you can chose to spend more on other things that otherwise wouldn't be affordable.
I have run more expensive cars than my golf in the past. It took me everything I had to get them and everything I could get to keep them.
It's all about your priorities and money management.

With an aim to get an R with DSG next have been playing with the 'economy' mode this last month under the conditions of being on an A road or a Motorway doing reasonable distance.
These journeys do not really need the power, just get to pace that want and sometimes with the ACC just cruise the journey.
This is on a GTD with DSG but you can see the MPG increasing markedly as each mile passes and yesterday the 70 miles estimate left to refueling went to 80 miles after travelling a fair distance.
Not sure how this translates to the GTi or the R so be interesting to see others who use economy on long distance runs?
No intention of compromising the sport experience when get the R, intend to enjoy that, but when conditions turn the car into a cruiser be nice to save a little bit.
Only really works for the cruise though as its quite slow in picking up if in any traffic.

Actually its a £125k car ;) - luckily i paid way less that that before the market went nuts!

its more of a mental thing, if its struggles to do 30MPG i'll start driving round like a grandma (this was what happened in my 981), it it pretty easily gets close to 40MPG i'll probably not worry about it - yes i am a bit mental! i'm trying very hard to justify coming out of my diesel company car into something more fun, its gonna cost me more to buy and run (opt out is poor), if the GTI only does 30MPG then sod it i'll buy the 235i as its loads quicker and a better deal as the discounts and delivery times are better.

this :D
i've wanted a Ferrari since i was 5 years old, when i was diagnosed with Cancer in 2007 i promised myself i'd get one if i didn't die, turns out i didn't die but it took me 8 years to be in a position to be able to borrow enough money to buy my dream car.
-
I get in trouble if I come home with a new Xbox game :(
Mind you, if I said "look dear I bought you a new Ferrari" she might at least pause for 5 secs before battering me with the frying pan and telling me how I should have spent the money on a new kitchen or a holiday and that how she wont be able to drive a 430 or that its not really for her, its for me.
LOL!

This is a weeks driving from Stafford to Fort William and around the highlands. Motorway was 70mph or slightly more all the way up and back, it got to 45mpg on the way up. It is always 35+mpg of any run over 10miles when the engine has warmed up the economy rises significantly. Getting over 400miles to a tank and can't grumble at that.

This was in my DSG R......... Over 40 in my GTI albeit manual was a piece of cake 🎂 (http://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag237/lee_palmer4/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsljo71grn.jpg) (http://s1369.photobucket.com/user/lee_palmer4/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsljo71grn.jpg.html)

Notice you have the setting as 'Eco' is that how this MPG was achieved, steady 50-70 MPH Cruise?
I can get mid 50s in my GTD under similar conditions so thats not too shabby at all and would be very happy if the R can achieve that on these medium distance runs.

that seems very impressive for an R, i thought the R was a heap worst than a GTI hence why i'd not even considered it.

PP DSG.

Over 30 miles is easy in eco, would be impressid if done over 100+ miles.
-
Don't get me wrong, that was me trying to get good MPG. Not something that's a normal occurrence in a remapped R . I did a 300 mile run to Nottingham and back ck on Tuesday and averaged a reasonable 37mpg. Cruising between 50-70mph with moderate traffic. In town 26mpg average. So a GTi should do 40 no problem.
-
I cant get 30 mpg out of my DSG Gti,always seems to be 29.odd mpg?

I don't do much motorway driving, hence the low average MPH

I've just driven to the entire length of the A14 this morning, boring road! 144 miles, average of 62mph with an average of 41mpg. This is the best I've seen in my PP DSG but I'm about to hit 10k so it's still loosening up.

That's a good return for the a1 as it's not all flat and with the DSG impressive as iv sed in another post did 270 round trip Sunday ave 70mph n got 37.5 not in eco mode concidering the car was 2 days old to I was more than impressed

Had a great result mpg-wise today in my PP manual. Coming home from work, 20 miles range remaining and today's route was 18 miles! Thought I might need to stop for fuel(!) so took it easy, cruising at 55-60 on the motorway. As I came off down the sliproad and stopped at the lights the economy was on 50.3! It was a short trip round the corner to the petrol station but I finished on 49.8 mpg over 17 miles. It was still climbing as I came off the motorway albeit slowly, so pretty sure a longer journey would have bettered that but to be honest, it was pretty boring and I have no plans to try it again anytime soon!
