Title: Best Golf R colour
Post by: JamesR27 on 12 April 2016, 17:34
Just found this on carwow and thought it was interesting, but most interesting was the colour percentages

https://www.carwow.co.uk/blog/best-golf-R-options

Not much liking for Reflex Silver or Oryx White, but surprised the Red is as popular as it is compared to white.

I was going to go for a Clubsport in silver before the price came out but not sure if I am brave enough on the golf R.

Has to be black, especially if you look after you cars or lease them and don't give a sh!t
Lapiz is the colour you see most so probably the reason I dislike it so much.
Only other option for me would be Tornado Red.

The reason Oryx White is not as popular is due to the price.  It is double the price of all metallic colours let alone Pure White which if I am correct is free of charge base colour.  Oryx White for most people will not warrant the extra cash for the subtle difference it appears compared to Pure White unless seen in certain light conditions.  However when seen in certain light conditions it is in a different league of it's own.

Oryx White is infact plain old Pure White with a pearlescent coat, and laquer on top.  This is why it costs more due to the extra coats.  However it is still very expensive and probably could be more affordable.

If I am correct in thinking, Oryx White originated as a signature colour for the Golf R on the MK6 or earlier then it was made available for other Golfs on the MK7.

As a side note I have just ordered a Golf R in Oryx White and currently own a Golf GTI PP in Oryx White as well, so you could say I am in the minority of people who would have a Golf R in Oryx White.  For the Clubsport I would spec Oryx White as well especially as it is the signature colour for this model and it looks great with the red accents of the GTI

std white, or "undercoat" if you prefer, is a paid for colour too! VW never miss a trick from even the plain white colour now its popular.

It is probably a reflection on the number of leased cars about as well given the premium for metallic over the term

I've gone for white on the R Estate for this reason and will just call it Bosch

So you even pay for base colours now as well.  You have got to hand it to VW, if they can make money on something then they will.

These are just configurations so therefore red will be the most popular for people just running a "no options" click through to find out the headline discount, possibly for people comparing costs with leasing?
It's a shame it's not on actual orders.

Being as common folklore suggests 90% of all Golf R orders were made in 2014 and they were nearly all in red and just happened to be 50p a month leases that will all hit the market in one go any time soon, thus crashing Golf R used prices for ever and ever I'm guessing red will actually be the most common colour.

From ones I've personally seen on the roads I'd say blue and white seem to be the most common.

Best colour for the R Estate.

Colours I see most are Lapiz, TR and White.  My favourite colours for the R are Reflex Silver and LSG.  And I'm not normally a fan of silvers on Golfs but these two just seem to work on the R in particular.  Oh, and DBP's not bad either.

Oryx white was a £1145 option when I got my CC and I was told that there was less than a handful of CC's in the colour. On dull days it looks white but on sunny days or under lights at night I don't think there is a better colour on the CC at least.

I would have ordered silver had things have turned out differently.
I've only seen one R in silver in the flesh and really liked it, under the street lights it really picked out the lines and accents to the extent you could just picture the designers knocking up the shape in CAD mock ups.

Best colour for the R Estate.

I found the estate a bit more colour sensitive, most colours are on the used car bit of the VW website and i liked the white, just needs some roof bars and blue bar pads

Would have ordered Oryx white for the GTD as love it but wanted the DCC more and so paint is was an easy trade off, and unless completely passionate about a colour then would stick with the standard white to give myself enough pounds for a preferred option.

Black is an amazing colour when pristine, which Kalimon comments, Rebecca R photos and then myself with 2 x pearl black quattro support but its high maintenance and mine never looked ever near their best in time had them as simply did not care for them as often as needed.

CSG would be my colour of choice on the R and typical its not an option!

Might pay for a colour this time though and its the black (have to fool myself that would clean it more), lapiz or standard white again (Oryx is too costly even if love)

I've gone for a pure white Golf R as its been a fantastic paint on my GTI in terms of durability and the way it's not picked up many stone chips.
Going to hopefully get mine Gtechniq detailed once it arrives.

Even though I have a white GTI I'd order my R in either DBP (black) or Lapiz Blue. Both look stunning.

Black ones look pure evil  and I don't see hardly any on the road.

Lapiz looks very very  but is the most common colour (because its exclusive).

I do love a clean Lapiz Blue but if I was ordering a R tomorrow I would have Reflex Silver with Pretoria's in a heartbeat !!

Although I see loads of R's in lapiz blue I think I'd be tempted to go for that colour as it is the unique colour for the car however LSG and reflex silver are very nice especially when combined with the panoramic roof.

One that was outside my apartment the other day.

The white is definitely a robust colour, there is not a mark on mine aside from some tar marks and nothing a real good clean would not have back to pristine

My black cars showed every mark and swirl and bird dropping and seemed to chip to the white primer far too easily really, so nothing major but the black to white contrast does have you picking them out. None of these issues are not resolved by a good clean and detail but you just have to be doing it pretty regularly to see the best of black as it does fade quickly where as the white keeps affect for quite a time without maintenance.

Looking at other colour just to have a change really where if was being sensible would stay with benefits of the white of zero additional cost and durability as well as being great colour for the MK 7 lines.

Just out of interest, in the long life of this board does anyone know why CSG is not an optional colour for the R?

Other colour are available across the range so why exclude that particular one? is it just manufacturing and they have to drop one colour to bring in Lapiz?
Title: Re: Best Golf R colour
Post by: p3asa on 13 April 2016, 11:50
I would have said exclusivity. The same as you only get Lapiz on the R.
I know the R is the top of the tree but its a bit like the alloys, the R doesn't have any right to have the GTD/I alloys.
Same as the paint.
That's how I see it.

Lapiz Blue.  Not only does it look amazing, but its the only exclusive R colour - and given the R's stealth like looks, it's the only colour that stands out at a glance

I was behind a Golf TDI GT today and it looked like it was carbon grey but obviously couldn't be, so I'm assuming it was non-metalic black or Urano grey.
The whole carbon grey 'R' debate is crazy, it simply should be available. Just because the letters GT aren't in it's title, doesn't mean it shouldn't have that colour option

I enquired before I bought my current car and any colour is available from over 50 colours that VW offer, the only drawback is the cost, in 2010 it was £2000 extra, but if you really want a colour!!!!!!

The R has "traditionally" had a signature blue colour as it was/is the Volkswagen Motorsport colour. Plus the blue clashes a bit with the GTI red in some people's eyes so therefore VW give the GTI/D a different signature colour which is dark grey. That possibly nods back towards Atlas Grey and the grey works superbly with the red accents.

Adding red accents is posssibly one of the few ways you could make Lapiz blue look any worse than it already does
I know it's a very popular colour with the 'R' crowd  and when it's a swirl free and gleaming, it's just about passable to be fair

I get this occasional feeling that you're not the biggest fan of Lapiz from time to time.
Just a hunch, call me perceptive and all that...

Whatever gave you that idea?
I need to lay of it to be fair. Colour choice  is a very personal thing and some people love blue cars.
I remember seeing a blue car that I liked once, I think it was a 911 in like a china blue. It was on a megafactories episode from a few years back

I think VW have got it right on this occasion - Lapiz signature for the R (though personally not my favourite as not big on blue cars); and Carbon Grey for the GTI/GTD.  As said, Lapiz and the red stripe and accents not a good combination and quite a way down the road to tackyville.  And with red footwells....  Carbon Grey and red made for each other but works equally (if not better) well with silver accents, which means it would also work well on the R, but I can understand the logic of not offering it for the R.

Now I've always loved Carbon Grey, but (DBP aside), if I was to choose another colour for an R, even if CG was available on the R, I would pick LSG or RS.

You'd get away with either colour because you keep them superbly. Not sure how appealing a dirty, dull LSG would be.
The one I saw in the dealers showroom when I collected mine was stunning to be fair.

We have just ordered a 3dr R in Reflex Silver

I had a 3dr MK5 GT Sport in RS and it always looked great and was very easy to look after so it has swayed the decision. White was never an option Due to the previous GTi.

Why thank you.  But I'm sure a dull and dirty LSG is no less appealing than a dull and dirty DBP.  But with LSG as with black, all is forgiven for the few hours it's clean.  LSG is stunning when well looked after.

Lol, I do, as do you.

RS is an inspired choice for the Mk7 R.  I think it suits the R most out of all the performance Golfs, works so well with the grill and black accents and the sharp lines serve to make a colour which can easily look ordinary, instead look very special indeed.  And in 3dr with 90% tint guise.....    Great choice Raffe.

12-13 weeks by the dealer so it should be with us early July, will be interesting to see when it does turn up.

We have gone light on the spec with only the 90% tints and Car Net App, not sure if that has any bearing on build time.
