Over the last 2 months I've been loosing a bit coolant on and off, enough to turn on the warning light.
Anyway the car went into the garage to find out what was wrong and they put it down to a bad egr cooler. The car went in a week later and this was replaced under warranty. All good and well!
During this I assumed the car would have to be taken on a test drive. Maybe a couple of miles down the dual carriage way? Not in this case. I have a dashcam in the car and just wanted to have a look to see what happens when a car goes in to a garage to be worked on. The technician working on the car took the car home while hitting speeds of up to 51mph through the town, squeezing down narrow streets and speaking on the phone.
I would be interested to hear peoples opinions on this!

A quiet word with the workshop manager is needed methinks and ask him of this sort of driving is acceptable
And what are they going to do to compensate you for ragging your car.....
Equally I believe you are more than within your rights to report the technician to the Police
-
Copy of footage to dealer principle to start with.
-
Report it to the chief exec of the garage where it was repaired and also the police as well that's not on .
What garage was this in please .?
-
What about a look at the video, even without naming the garage.
-
Why did he drive it home??
-
Why did he drive it home??
To have some fun
Seriously I have heard of this happening before when a car might need an extended test and rather than take time out of the workshop they bring the car home. Personally they would need a very good reason to bring my car home and I would also want to know where it was going and being parked overnight.
-
That's not acceptable. I would certainly be taking it up with the Service manager with the dealer principal copied in.
I also wouldn't be making the dealer known on a public forum until you had things sorted out.
I have a dashcam and found it interesting that a couple of stone chips that appeared on my car between dropping it off and picking it up "must have happened on the test drive" Strange that considering it never left the dealers!

The only reason I posted this was to hear peoples opinions on this. I won't be naming the garage and I'm not going to post the footage online. I really don't want to put someone out of a job, in the end no harm was done!
-
Just remember that the mechanic had no regard for your property and also there might be a speeding ticket land through your letter box!

Why bother asking then? No garage should be taking a customer's car home and certainly not driving it without taking care. It shouldn't be done end of and what if this is common practice at this garage and someone gets hurt the next time the mechanic takes another customers car home?

If you don't care then why post it up in the first place?
You say no harm done? As has been said, speeding ticket could be just around the corner? What if someone had pulled out on him when he was speeding? Was the car left overnight at the mechanics address? Is it insured parked at the mechanics house - I wouldn't want it's theft to have to be claimed off my insurance!
My most important problem with it is the breach of trust that you are paying them to do to you!!

It's no big deal a technician taking the car home, it happens all the time & it's not just a perk of the job for them, it only happens with cars which have a problem which might have an intermittent problem and may need a longer drive to come up with the symptoms the owner has described and if the tech can get the problem to appear on a drive home then it saves the dealer losing the use of a tech during the day. A couple of times I know a tech has taken my car home in the past but I've always been asked my permission before hand, both times that was with BMW.

Correct, my GTI was taken by the master technician but again was asked prior to them taking it.
I think the original poster should have a quiet word with the branch manager and just get something free as compensation.

Being asked for permission for the tech to drive it home is very different to him taking it without you knowing and ragging it down the local high street whilst on the phone.......
I'd be p**sed to say the least!

Point taken but I'd hardly call 51mph "ragging it"

I think its a fuss about nothing, no harm came to you or the car.
The OP didn't say the car was thrashed or ragged just driven over the speed limit. I wonder if any of us drive over the speed limit?
To the OP if you are concerned just call the dealer and speak to someone like the service manager, I'm sure you will get an honest apology and the member of staff will be spoken to. I have to do it to staff and I expect they will do the same, then you can move on.
Hope the warranty work went ok...

This - my brother is a service manager (not for VW!) and they take cars home when it helps with diagnosis or for an extended run to test something has solved an issue. Its insured - on their policy. If you get a NIP you can put down you werent driving and who was in charge of it at the time. My brother certainly doesnt abuse other people's cars (except maybe mine!) and he wouldnt expect his mechanics to so a quiet word in his ear would help make sure it didnt happen again.
If its a serial offender then he may lose his job and rightly so - if you are told not to do something and carry on, are you the sort of person who should be working on someone's pride and joy?
-
IMO the issue is the fact that they did not ask permission. Had they have done you would have had a choice, but the fact they just decided to use your property without permission does not suggest they have customer service high up on their agenda.

Agree this is the biggest issue.
