I know there was a thread a while ago regarding the lettering coming away on the start/stop button, but just wondered how they are standing up ?
Mine has two areas coming away from the two letter "N"'s. It went in for a 20K service today, so I pointed it out, but was told it isn't a "warranty issue" and that it can be replaced for around £140.
Anyone else had this problem ? Weird they can take a door card apart to repair a rattle under warranty, but not replace the button on car that is less than 2 years old.
-
They replaced mine under warranty and have done for others too.
If it wasn't a problem they wouldn't have redesigned it.
-
had mine replaced under warranty a few weeks ago for the new design one
-
Thanks Guys,,
I feel a trip back to the dealer is in order....

Hello Guys, I have read about this issue before on here, did not give it another thought (I'm alright Jack syndrome) got in the car tonight to put it in the garage, pressed the button, and ouch, the peeling plastic or whatever it is went into the end of my finger and blood came out! King's Lynn VW, here I come!

Of course it's much better to get the SS switch replaced under warranty, but if you want to just replace the switch cap (assuming that you can buy the switch cap alone), then it's not difficult to do
To get access to the switch module on the centre console see the video below
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UX6UuEYKkM&feature=youtu.be
Once you have the switch module out of the car, CAREFULLY pull-off the switch cap and replace it with the new unit.
It is not necessary to disassemble the switch to replace the cap, but if you want (need) to do this, lever back the tabs as shown below:

Then disassemble the switch module into its constituent parts as shown below (ignore my instructions on the picture - it was used for another purpose):

Re-insert the switch module in the car

Insist on it getting done under warranty? its a defective part. If there are any exceptions to warranty (VW used to only entertain a year for defective seat coverings) this wont be one of them. If the dealership is insistent then take your warranty/servicing business elsewhere.

It's a different part than you think. It's the metal topped button for stopping and starting the engine, not the one that disables the stop/start feature in the bank of buttons next to the gearstick.

I have emailed the service advisor I spoke to yesterday and pointed them to the forums where it quite clearly states that Buttons have been replaced under warranty.
Not a good day all round really, as they also told me my Service book was not in the glove box. Really weird, because I would never have removed it from the last time it was serviced... I have wondered if it has somehow fallen behind the glovebox - Anyone know if it easily removed ?

I agree about insisting on getting it done under warranty.
It would seem as though you have a bad dealer. I wonder if you were to pay for the part would they claim it as a warranty part and get paid twice.
As for the service book, was it not in the folder? If it was then I can't see it being lost down the back of the glovebox. Are you sure you had the service book? It is the first thing I look for when I pick up a new car and when I'm getting a car serviced I always bring the book into the dealers with me when I'm dropping the car off and make sure that it is noted in the paperwork that I have handed it to the person I'm dealing with. That way the book can't go disappearing or if it does we know it is the dealers fault.
I also have them do a full inspection of my car including miles and petrol/diesel to make sure they don't mess about with the car. Two reasons for that, one was back when I had my Mk4 R32 and I left it at the dealers for warranty repairs. Later the next day I was driving rather briskly when I had another car come up behind me and determined not to let him pass(I was a lot younger) put my foot down only to get smoked a few miles down the road by my own car.
The second thing was when I collected another car I noticed the fuel was really down in the car but the miles were the same, but when I checked the trip one duration it was at just under 6 hours so it would seem that they obviously liked the music on my iPod and used my car as their stereo for the day and rather than having to keep turning the system back on they just left the car running.
I personally find it very hard to trust a dealer nowadays.
What dealer are you using?
-
I won't mention the dealer as I will give them a chance to do the right thing first. Is really strange though, because every other aspect of the visit was absolutely top class, couldn't fault them at all. I had assumed it was a post-"emissions scandal" customer satisfaction drive.
With regards to the service book, I am really at a loss. This is the 2nd service, there was no mention on the first service that it was missing and I honestly can't remember seeing or not seeing it prior to that. I do usually leave it on the passenger seat for them, but wasn't feeling well when I dropped the car off yesterday and just wanted to get back home.

Wow what are the chances of that? I've read about folk seeing their own car but never being raced by their own car
You were obviously a bit of a petrol head did you not even notice you had another R32 on your tail, never mind your own car? I can spot them a mile away.
What did they give you as way of an apology?
My work colleague dropped his car off at the dealers years ago and as he was passing mid morning he says he saw his car wheel spinning away from the lights!! According to him he says he demanded 4 new tyres and got them.

Five simple rules on leaving a car at the dealers:
1.Always do a walk around inspection with the reception person and have them record condition in writing.
2. Take a photo of the fuel gauge and mileage on the MFD with your phone and make it obvious to them.
3. Tell them not to wash the car and place signs in the windows on both sides to that effect (unless you are happy for them to swirl up the paintwork of course)
4. Wait with the car if you can.
5. Instruct them they DO NOT have your permission to drive the car off their premises. If they say they need to 'test drive' it say thats OK but you will need to be with them on the drive.

VW replaced my button under warranty in first year of ownership, they didn't raise an eyebrow. If a button can't survive a few hundred presses (let alone a few thousand), it's really not fit for purpose!
I too was stabbed by the sharp plastic flakes (cue violin). It redefines the exhilaration of starting your car anyway

Well,,,,, Their warranty advisor states that it is not covered under warranty as it is seen as "wear and tear", they reckon they would not be able to claim warranty for it if they replaced it.
I do give up with VW dealers...
I wonder what the chances are that I will be charged for it when I hand the car back at the end of the PCP period, by an over-zealous car checker. All of a sudden it will become damage and not wear and tear ...
-
Can someone describe the difference between the old and the redesigned Start button please?

There's "fair wear and tear" and then there's something that;s supposed to last as long as the car and hasn't. There's no way that's fair. The warranty manager is obviously massively risk adverse regarding getting reimbursement - time to go elsewhere.
I had whiteworm on my MK5 Golf GT's wheels and Benfield wouldn't do anything for fear of not getting reimbursed, so I went to Pulman - never been there before and the warranty manager sorted everything straight away and I waited a week for the new wheels to come in. I've bought 4 cars from Pulman and none from Benfield after that event - a costly mistake for them.

I'd be interested to know this also.

The old one used DNA recognition to start the engine (analysing the blood you shed onto the button from the sharp edge of the picked out "N").

Very funny but not very helpful

It was midwinter and darkish so I couldn't see the car especially because of the xenons on the R32 and I didn't know it was even an R32 until he put his indicator on and I seen the two bulbs.
I got a lovely set of BBS LM's from them. I followed my car back to the dealers and went mental at them. They asked what they could do to rectify the 'problem' and I had been looking to get some BBS wheels(CH's) so I said a set of 19" LM's with tyres of my choice. I don't think the knew how much they were going to be but I had them sign a letter of stating what they were going to get me. I went for a set of Goodyear F1's

This is a know issue and you are being fobbed off by the dealer in a very unimpressive way - go elsewhere and never return - this is an established warranty claim item.

That's a result well done. Its shocking how some places totally disregard other folks property.

The new version actually has very fine links across from the surrounding metal to the points of metal within the 'N'.
Stops the flaps of metal coming away from the button.

Finally, a sensible answer. Thanks for that Gnasher

Let me see what happens after I have had it replaced. I will then go back to dealer (A) and ask how they explain what has happened.
I will at least give them the chance to put things right.
-
Ha ha - let us know how you get on.
-
Karlak: I would ask them why they wouldn't accomodate and then tell them they've lost a customer over the issue. I wouldn't waste my time or money on them again (except for future car purchase if they're cheaper than anyone else).
-
All replaced and sorted today under warranty :)

VW Customer services are on the case as to why warranty wasn't an option with the first Dealer.

Thanks for posting those comparison pics. Glad you got it sorted :)
