Hi all, I've lurked here for the last 18 months. Collected a red GTD in November 2014. Really enjoyed it and thought it was great.
Sadly I was burgled on Friday morning for the car - we heard them tearing away but by then it was too late. I'm just outside Glasgow - police have been great - pretty honest about how common this is unfortunately.
I'm not sure what will replace it. Police man was very clear, he very bluntly said not to get an R having lost the GTD the way I did. He said they'd by back - and for an R they are prepared to use more force as they are paid more for them. Terrifying isn't it. 😞
-
Sorry to hear that - hopefully you and your family are unhurt
-
Sorry to hear that and hope no one was hurt. Was you out or was it during the night. This is something that has been playing on my mind since I brought the car taking the enjoyment out of it for me.
-
My wife and 3 kids were upstairs. It was 5 am and we think something spooked them - the noise they made driving away was daft. It was very icy so there was a lot of skidding.
My keys were in the kitchen - they usually aren't. Police reckon they've probably checked before, and it was sheer chance the one time I leave them in sight of the window was the time they came back for another look!
Chatting to the specialist police team who came round the next day was very enlightening - there's a thriving black market where our cars are superficially cloned by changing the plate to one matching a similar car and sold to other criminals to kick about in - for buttons because it's in the full knowledge the cars are knocked - and therefore disposable.
He told of one they recovered and it had just been valeted before being sold to the new 'buyer'!
-
Horrible bastards! I always take my keys up with me I know a lot of people leave them downstairs I suppose the only thing in that case is they don't have to challenge you for them. Baseball bat at the ready by my bed although I like to think I have secured my house as best as possible hopefully never have to find out.

The swapping the plates has been going on for years have even seen cars coming back with better wheels on them and Bluetooth systems fitted  probably find it not far away from you if it's not been stripped to repair a crashed 1.4

Terrible news mate gutted for you
Pretty sure I've seen it posted up on a few Facebook groups? Reg ending in rhg?
I'll keep my eyes peeled. Good thing now with Facebook is a couple of pics posted and thousands of folk know to look out for it. Seen a few times people getting them back because of this so hopefully the same for you.
-
Not sure I'd want it back wouldn't feel the same
-
Gutted for you mate. Hope you get it back.
-
Not sure I'd want it back wouldn't feel the same
If they are washing them they can take mine  might get it back clean
-
Did you manage to purchase gap insurance on the Gtd hopefully this won't leave you out of pocket too. Making my blood boil just thinking about it

That's the one. I'm really touched how many different groups of people have shared / seen my post.
I appreciate everyone good wishes here to 👍
Re getting it back - if it was in that window where it was parked up to test for a tracker, then yes, I would want it back.
After a couple of weeks of people kicking about in it, eating, farting, smoking etc - no thanks. It was immaculate inside - still smelled like new 😂
Private plate, winter tyres and a roof rack and bike rack should help it stand out a bit from other red ones. They can take the roof rack off - but the bent rubber seals above the doors will give the game away for weeks to come...
We shall see. Got to wait 6 weeks before the insurance will write it off and I can get on with sorting another car - and start trying to get my plate back. If the car isn't recovered it's a 12 month wait till I can apply for it back - doesn't mean I will apparently.
It's all such a PITA just so some one can earn a few quid stealing it 😢

It's a company car - so no worries on that front thankfully. 👍
-
I haven't even got my car yet and this is stressing me out, thinking how I can protect mine.
People are scum.
Sorry for your loss.
-
Sorry to hear about this mate. I also saw it on facebook. The biggest thing is that you and your family are okay, cars can always be replaced.
-
Anyone had a tracker fitted and if so, which one and how good is it?
-
Sorry to hear that your GTD was stolen. Total scumbags. I had my gti stolen in June last year. I went for a scorpion track in the end. Couple of hours to fit and about £300 I think plus subscription. Don't quote me though!!
-
I know exactly how you feel,we had our golf r stolen a few months back by masked raiders smashing down the door in the middle of the night, luckily the car was found only a few hour latter with minimal damage.
When I got the car back I did think about getting a professionally installed tracker,,but instead decided to leave a old iPhone in the car hooked up to a big juice pack, the find my iPhone app works brilliantly.
-
Sorry to here about this.
I wouldn't want it back, it would be like your wife leaving you then coming home after knowing about 5 men have been through her. It just wouldn't feel right.

until they use a gps blocker it works great and cheaper than tracker
-
Ive installed extra locks on all my doors, house alarm, cctv all that I can think of just to try as much as possible to prevent someone getting in and if that fails I have a 32inch baseball bat and a .22 air pistol next to my bed.

Anyone had a tracker fitted and if so, which one and how good is it?
I've got one fitted to my R, the CobraTrak Plus. It was £250 fitted, and the subscription is £138 a year. I guess you only find out how good they are if your car gets stolen, and I'm hoping that won't happen, but a friend had his BMW M235i taken and it was found hours later parked up on an industrial estate in Manchester.

Which company did you use to fit this?
-
I'm looking at using the same method that's used to wire the extra supply for the dash cams but instead you can purchase a 12v to 5v usb output and hardwire that into behind the glove box and leave an old iPhone plugged in out of sight and then use find my iPhone. Just as long as it doesn't overheat

Thanks I'll take a look. No issues with anything on the car afterwards? And was you pleased with there level of competence and service.
-
Yeah, absolutely fine. I was quite specific about when I needed it fitting, and they were very accommodating. The guy turned up in a brand new Toffee Brown VW Transporter and appeared to have a very professional attitude. As you would expect, there is zero visibility that anything has been done to the car. Activating the subscription with Vodafone Automotive was also very easy.
-
The only problem with the tracker is the scumbags seem to know where to look for them, this is my car after I got it back.

Sounds good may look into getting one. I just have worries about anything happening to the car and vw wont cover it under warranty as the car has been messed with. I seem to have bad luck in these situations you see lol

Blimey that's terrible is there anywhere they didn't rip open

I thought this would act as a guide as where not to have your tracker installed.

On a side note what did you think of the spare wheel sound thingy?

Part of the reason I bought the CobraTrak one is that it is approved by VW.
At th end of the day, it's a fairly minimal outlay when you consider the cost of the car. It's in no way a deterrent, because you don't advertise the fact you have a tracker fitted, but I'd like to think that if my car was stolen it might help the Police apprehend the people behind these thefts. In my area the Police have recently charged seven people with the theft of 14 vehicles, so these people aren't invincible, they get caught up with eventually.

Yeah that's true thanks for the link. The only deterrent I have is a disklok fitted. I have a few Gti and Rs by me and none have seem to have gone missing yet so I'm hoping that's the case with mine.

It's well worth the money, after having the mk7 gti with the Standard System (which to my ears never sounded great) the dynaudio was one of the first thing I option on the R.

What Facebook page was this on? I am just along the road in Larbert, not many red GTD's around here so I will keep an eye out.

Horrible fatherless sons! I always take my keys up with me I know a lot of people leave them downstairs I suppose the only thing in that case is they don't have to challenge you for them. Baseball bat at the ready by my bed although I like to think I have secured my house as best as possible hopefully never have to find out.
Stuff that. If someone is stupid enough to break into my house to steal my Golf, then he can happily help himself to the keys and leave me and the wife out of it. That's why I pay for Comp and gap insurance!
Can replace a car, can't replace the wife so easily..
To the OP, sorry for your loss but at least your family are unharmed. :)
-
It would be a terrible situation to find yourself in, 2 or more strangers gathered round your bed at 3 in the morning.
I have trained in martial arts for 25 years, including 13 yrs practising Kali, a weapons based fighting system ( hence my screen name ), and I would be reluctant to engage anybody in the above situation.
You are barely awake, have your wife next to you and 3 kids down the hall and no contact lenses in in my case.
Give 'em the keys and ask them to leave.
Unless you hear them breaking in that is. That's another scenario all together

I'm the same, our keys are left hanging in our hallway on a rack and just in case they are a little stupid we even have keys in nice big letters above the rack. As you said, that is what insurance and gap is for.

All my keys sleep on my bedside table...about 6" above the head of my Rhodesian Ridgeback who sleeps beside the bed.

I know what you mean mate, but the only bloke ever to mess with my dog still eats his steak and chips through a straw!!!!

No, she provides the distraction while I wake up and get the gun from under the mattress...!

Hai like it can safely say I think anyone who breaks into your place will be doing a sharpe u turn.... I have two boxer dogs but knowing them they would think it's some sort of game and start playing about.
-
My Ridgie will play games all day with someone she knows...God help those who she doesn't!! She was trained, by me to be a "face dog" and that's what she aims at....a 50 kg dog attached to your face isn't something to smile about (pun intended). It's also legal for a citizen to own a gun (pistol, rifle, shotgun) for the purpose of defending his property (must be licenced, of course) and if anyone gets shot, inside your boundary....tough sh!t!! Might explain why home invasions and robberies numbered about 10, for the whole country last year!! I own a Browning Hi Power, 9mm pistol which I'm very experienced and proficient with, but I've not had to use it in anger over here...my dog is the best deterrent!!

my boxer would be the same unless they tried to take his ball

Thank you so much for checking! Really really appreciate it.
Mine had Pirelli SottoZero 3 winters on the standard Nogaros. 👍
I don't have loads of FB friends / followers, it was shared on a Scottish car forum and seems to have gone round a few community boards too - great to hear people down south have heard too - shows it's worth always sharing these stolen car posts wherever we are!
-
What Facebook page was this on? I am just along the road in Larbert, not many red GTD's around here so I will keep an eye out.
I made my own post public and Tartan Tarmac kindly shared it for me.
That's been a week now and no news - so who knows...
It had a roof rack and single Thule Pro Ride attached and was on SottoZero winter tyres - so as red GTDs goes it was a bit different.
Insurance company won't give money for the roof rack and bike rack - they want me to order new ones and claim it back. Erm, I don't have a car to know what roof rack to order 😂
Really miss it - but don't want to start thinking about a replacement - as I've a 6 week wait till the insurance write it off.
Have really beefed up the house security with more to do - but my wife is still really freaked out. The kids are okay thankfully- keep asking "what have the robbers done with your car Daddy" - but haven't connected that they were in the house to get the keys - which I'm happy about - don't want them being afraid in their own house too...
-
What a depressing sign of the of the times we are living in.
I'm looking at installing new security lighting and even considering a CCTV system, but I fear even that won't deter these a#seholes.

No problem, it was just a matter of stopping and a quick check on the cars.

Can anyone recommend a good quality CCTV camera that sends images to your phone?
Had a look at a few Samsung models online but someone with first hand experience of one would be good.
-
I had my house burgled in September as my family slept at 4am he left my GTI keys but took my new van keys.
They used my van in a armed robbery the following week all my expensive Festool power tools stolen adding to around 6k. Was totally gutted but have upped my security and found out who the thieving b*****d is he also stole another nice car on Monday morning as it was being defrosted. Karma is coming soon.

No problem. Really easy to install. 2 cam has 500g hard drive 30 days recording
4 cam has 1tb 60 days recording. I'm sure if you shop about you may get it even cheaper.

The resolution on the camera is poor you min req 720p. The camera itself is just an additional camera to add to a Samsung DVR.
