It's great, I'm glad I held out for the mib2. Spotify is good but I use Siri quite a bit for finding numbers and address'.

It's a shame the maps isn't pinch to zoom or that vw doesnt support wireless connection but I can live with it how it is.

Does anybody know if app connect can be retro fitted yet? I have a new MY2016 car so it has the car net function but App connect says can be activated by an authentication code from dealer. My dealer thought retro fit this wasn't yet available but wasn't 100% sure when it would be if at all. Surely it's a software update only? Would have been specced by me if car hadn't been a dealer pre order and already past the options cut off date.

It's a real shame VW don't let us have a message reader on the standard system. My wife's 2012 Fiat 500 has it and works really well, just the same as the CarPlay one.

That's one of the features I most like about CarPlay, really useful to be able to listen to text/iMessages.

Bungleaio iOS 9 brings in wireless support apparently. No need for the cable... The music integration will be great with an apple music subscription...

I ordered the TechPack on my new R and it has CarPlay and Mirrorlink as part of the package but CarPlay no great use to me as I do not have a mobile with a Data Contract, I was very disappointed to be told that most apps require a data connection to work properly, just explored Mirrorlink and my phone does not support it.

Post by: mk7gti on 07 December 2015, 17:40
Data is relatively cheap these days time for a contract upgrade

A mobile phone contract without an data allowance? How is that even possible in the 21st century?!

Probably a Nokia 5210 still on it's original battery charge...

A little off topic but:--

Being blissfully retired I have no need to be tied to a mobile computer and controlled by my job, no commute means no need to waste time playing silly games or replying to company Emails so who needs a data connection, or come to that a ‘contract’.

Have 2 towers, 2 laptops and 2 tablets at home, and worked in IT all my life so no technophobe but when I see people in cars and in the street glued to their precious giant ‘phone’ I feel sorry for them.

When you retire you will understand there are many other things in life to enjoy.

So you were disappointed to find that the mobile data service stuff in MIB2 needed mobile data service and that the smart phone mirroring feature needed a smart phone?

Which bit of IT did you work in? Was it management by any chance? :-P

I take my hat off to you for managing to go without data, that's some feet in this day and age. I don't play games, don't have work emails to reply to and I'm certainly not tied to a contract but couldn't live without data.
£12 a month, no contract, voice and 2Gb does me.

My family all use WhatsApp to communicate while out. So that alone is enough for me. But you can't beat having that the internet in your pocket while out. You need to embrace the future

IT breeds dependency and it is a very bad master, before the internet we had ISDN and it kept me working 12 hours a day, live in the office and ISDN at home, my work mobile was always switched off when not in the office – a rebel.

I started in engineering then teaching other engineers in mechanical, electro-mechanical and electronic engineering, I did move into management and then project management/project director all of which supposedly demanded 24/7 commitment but was so singularly successful I out performed others while only working 4-6 hours a day due to health problems, which were mainly bought on by the pressure to succeed.

I was medically retired only then did my health improve though it took 3 years before I could live an even remotely ‘normal’ life.

I was retired the highest paid Project Director in the company, with a generous pay off and a not so generous pension.

IT does provides a new way of working/living but it is a dangerous master and sucks you in to believing that you can not live without it. Witness kids who cannot think for themselves and rely on Google and Wikipedia to answer all their questions.

There is a place for technology but over reliance appears to be breeding regression of the human gene pool.

We all lived perfectly fulfilled lives before the advent of 24 hour connectivity and that enabled the development of 24 hour connectivity and as far as I can see the benefits do not out way the drawbacks, as the human brain has not developed as quickly as the technology it is current feeding off.

Viva independent thought.  Beware the Terminator

There will be no more post from me in this thread which has m0ved some way from the OP

For how little use the Sat Nav then will definitely not order next time around and use the Car Play option and as will be using the Apple Music for my streaming when my Deezer runs down it integrates even more seamlessly.

Out of contract at moment so will just choose data heavy one when decide to commit to another 24 months with anyone.

Well Said x 2

Certainly something I have awareness of in needing to keep a balance and also became strong enough to resist the always connected work culture alluded to and remain as efficient if not more so than those who check everything 24/7 and that's simply by having proper time to refresh each and every day.

One of the things do regularly is just turn off Outlook for an hour or so through each working day and concentrate on tasks need to complete.

If anything was really urgent then expect someone to go back to the old days and phone me!

Its time proven now that nothings ever really that urgent that a few hours ever changes

Tend to use IT for the light and entertaining out of work and maybe to make life easier by using mobile banking and ordering the shopping

Do not be slave to the technology be its master and you then have a nice complement to modern life.

Wise words.

I handed my work smart phone back a year ago.  The longest I'm away from the office is 2 days at the weekends (if I'm not working any) and if it can't wait till my return then, tough!  And if I'm on holiday the last thing I want to see is any work emails.  As soon as you look at your work email on a phone that's it, you start working!!!

Work Outlook email is one of the most stressful things in my life.  It's a constant battle to keep it under control and to a workable level.  What doesn't help is getting a "your mailbox is nearly full" email message every several times a day. That hardly helps the situation.  I am fortunate that my time is split between on site and office based, but on the days I am office bound, I now make myself leave the office for a half hour, usually go for a drive, just to get some time away from the computer.

And just because your phone rings or pings, doesn't mean you have to stop whatever you are doing to respond.  Nobody has to be available 24hrs a day!

I too use most of my tech for leisure, buy virtually everything online and of course...forums.

Sorry, back to CarPlay topic.....

Tbh as cool as it is i have used it once ot twice. Having to plug cables in just kills the usefullness for me. Hopefully VW will support wireless carplay with a future software upgrade.

You assume correct. You just use your own. It's no longer a proprietary socket / cable like the old MDI interface was.

Meaning that on the current spec sheet it doesn't show it... that's as much of a "plan" as they have.

MY17 is a spec they haven't got a clue about but be sure that it won't be a retro fit to MY16 vehicles.

It could be and should be (like any other computer device, of which you have several) a free software upgrade for all users with compatible hardware, but car makers haven't quite joined the 21st century yet.

Apple has blocked German car maker Volkswagen from showcasing wireless CarPlay connectivity at CES in Las Vegas this year, according to a report from Car and Driver. Apple introduced the ability to connect an iPhone wirelessly to CarPlay in iOS 9, but there has yet to be a commercial release for an infotainment system that supports the function.

“We wanted to demonstrate wireless CarPlay and the owner of CarPlay technology didn’t allow us to,” Volkmar Tannerberger, head of electrical and electronic development at Volkswagen, told Car and Driver.
The current CarPlay setup requires users to connect an iPhone to a vehicle via USB port, and many have seen the wireless feature as a natural evolution of the in-car system. Although Tannerberger didn't divulge the specifics behind Apple's stonewalling, it is likely the Cupertino company wanted more control over all of the elements going into the public debut of the wireless feature.

In lieu of its inability to show off wireless CarPlay features, Volkswagen used its CES booth to demonstrate a new project that connects a smartphone to a car's infotainment system and mirrors its functions and controls. The car maker used an open-sourced standard called MirrorLink, unavailable on iPhones, to show off the technology, which would let users stream content from a smartphone and onto the in-car system. Volkswagen was said to "envision" the feature working in tandem with a wireless charging system to keep a phone topped off.

CarPlay news has been flowing out of CES this year, with companies like Kenwood, JVC, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and others announcing incoming support for Apple's in-car system. There are still a few opting out of the service, however, including Toyota, which decided to go with SmartDeviceLink over CarPlay and Android Auto earlier in the week.
