What is it with GTD drivers driving around with their fog lights on? I see several on a daily basis, all driven around at all times of the day with just the front fog lights on. I didn't even realise it was possible to have the front ones on without the back one coming on.
Am I missing something here?
-
Not sure I've noticed any - are they using them as DRL's?
-
Weird really.
I leave my lights on auto, which means when its foggy you need to turn the switch to ON before two further clicks for front and rear fogs.
I hate people who drive around with fog lights on when there is no fog. There's no excuse - the status lights are big and bright and in your face, you just must be being a cnut.

I guess, but with the headlight DRLs on as well. Like there is any need!
-

All cars have separate controls if they are fitted with front and rear fog lights - well certainly all those I have driven. On the Golf you pull the control knob out one click for fronts and one more for fronts and rears.
Not much point in having the front fogs on in a GTD (Mk.7) as you already have bright U shaped DRL LED's in the headlight units.

Are you sure you can't have the front fog lights on with the parking/side lights?
-
Both front and rear fog lights can be selected with the lighting knob turned to 'Auto', sidelights or headlights.
-
This happens around here all the time too, DRLs and front fogs. Gives the car more presence but is annoying when you know they are fog lights
-
Always thought of the fogs on the GTI/D as more of a styling thing, they're not great as actual fog lights and don't really dazzle oncoming traffic lets be honest, i like seeing them as described above but never do it myself.
-
It's the one thing I do not miss on the R. Much prefer the deep intakes.
Though I did on occasion use my old GTI fog lights (in fog, not as DRL's), they are no great loss at all. Loads of drivers round my way have their DRL's and fogs blazing away all day, looks ridiculous and just no need.
-
I don't really get why you can turn them on independently of one another - surely if it's foggy, it's foggy and you should have both front and rear on...
-
My house is quite near a show home and I see people pull up quite often with their fog lights on when it's not foggy, then get out of the car to go into a (fairly dark compared to outside) show home; and what do they do as they get out of the car? They put their sunglasses on to go INSIDE!!! It's some kind of neurotic behaviour that many people have. In their own mind they're trying to be cool but failing miserably.
It's not like they're knuckle draggers either as they aren't exactly cheap houses or cheap cars and no doubt the sunglasses cost more than I earn in a month...
Anyway, I think the GTI and GTD have a far prettier face than the R and I do like the foglights tucked away on those models but as previously stated, they're white LED lights so not going to be very effective in fog plus the cars have xenon lights as standard in the UK which kind of negate foglights up to a point although I did find the fogs on my GTI useful in really bad visibility for lighting the verges so they're not completely redundant. If you have a standard Euro or US GTI/D with crappy halogens then the fog lights will have a lot more benefit (unless you live in Arizona I guess...)

...unless someone is following you. Then it would be considerate to turn the rear one off. Leaving it switched on when someone is close enough to clearly see your tail lights is akin to leaving your headlights on main beam when oncoming traffic approaches.

Good call and also (although more in the time before high level brake lights) it's very easy for fogs to mask the brake lights coming on, increasing the chances of someone rear ending you.
I will say though that having them on as additional lights to high beam is a massive improvement down country lanes at night as they light up the verges so much better than the standard xenons. I know some have done it as a VCDS mod and it's a bloody good idea!

I think it harks back to the days when only sporty cars had front fogs, so people used to put them on to show they had a sporty car. Then everyone got them. By the letter of the law, I only had reason to put my front fogs on once in 20 months with the GTD.

Never trust someone who wears sunglasses indoors, unless a medical reason to do so, and 'trying to be cool' is not a medical reason.
Never trust someone who has their fogs on in bright daylight, unless.........

Having fogs on in bright daylight with no fog is just a beg for attention.... for me nothing shouts chav more.
Having said that I coded mine to come on if I flash lights (in addition to xenon full beam), makes it a bit more visible if Xenons are on dipped already.
Otherwise I possibly have had them on 10 times in last year when it was actually foggy (scary how many people drive with no lights or sidelights only in fog, or other extreme have rear fog lights on when you can clearly see their normal tails from 50m or more and dazzle you).

Yes and just the same its not allowed under the Highway Code... but the number of twonks who don't know or don't care is shocking.

Both front and rear fog lights can be selected with the lighting knob turned to sidelights or headlights (but not 'Auto' or 'off').
You can't have fog lights without headlights on...
The Mk7 has a different set up to the Mk6.
On the Mk6 if you go to pull out the switch to put on the fog lights, the switch will physically move to the side as well.
On the Mk7 you can put the fog lights on in "auto" and the switch doesn't move to the side. It won't put the fogs on in the Off position but does put the fogs on with just the side lights on. I don't think you could do this in the Mk6.

As above, my fog lights work in auto as I use them to thank people when the headlights are on.
I don't ever drive with them unless it's foggy though, or i'm down a very dark lane!

you can code them via VCDS to come on when your full beam are on.
So when you flash someone they automatically come on.
Great feature for country roads.

Driving with fog lights on used to be a pet hate of mine until I watched Alpha Papa the movie and I realised I was turning into Alan Partridge - "your fog lights are on"
-
Sorry - I will correct my post - foglights can be selected in Auto (i don't think you could with the mk.6 though). Is the issue that people are leaving their setting on Auto all the time with the first click pulled out so fog lights are on all the time and the headlights come on and off with the light sensor?
-
Yes, I discovered you can pull it out when its set to auto engage the fog lights. I learnt something here :)
However, the bloody bright warning lights telling you that your fogs are on is a bit of a clue... basically the idiots don't care.
-
Not quite - if the light switch is in auto, and you pull it out to put the front fog lights on then the headlights come on as well, irrespective of how dark it is - the light sensor seems to be bypassed in this situation.

How do we explain the picture at the top of the page then?

How do we explain the picture at the top of the page then?
The switch is at the sidelight setting and pulled out to activate fog lights.

Couldnt see the little side light LED on in that picture - although there is a fair bit of reflection etc.....
