Good morning ladies and gents. The last few days I have been keeping tabs on how many performance golfs I see on my travels around the east and north Norfolk area, but from reading threads on here it seems to vary massively depending on where in the country you live.
So this week I have seen 16 GTDs 1 GTI and 0 R (excluding mine)
Now I know for a lot of people the R is a common sight. Which I find amazing, because in the 3 months I have owned it I have probably seen one 3-4 times in total. Which is the same frequency I see GTIs. GTDs on the other other hand are everywhere!
Also I have only seen 1 GTE since its release
-
In and around Leeds city centre the R is a pretty common site in the past few days I must of seen at least 20 and one of which was on fire! Gtd's and Gti's are lot less common site around here.
-
Not such a common sight where I live.
GTD's are the most common but even then only seen about half dozen different ones. Maybe 4 GTI's and only 3 R's (though soon to be 4!). Coincidentally, over in vwroc, an R owner in Canterbury has just made contact, so will be looking out for him when I'm out and about.

Have you got your R yet? Seems like you have been waiting forever! Got to love those lead times

Not yet, but it's coming. Being built wc 7/9 so should be arrive early Oct, all being well. It's been a hell of a long wait!
-
I sometimes see a white R around Wroxham way- it's always driving dead slow!
-
I've only seen one GTI, a smattering of GTDs and a couple of Rs but they could well have been the same car. Having said that I have only been interested enough to take notice recently but even so, very few about. I shall be upping the tally by 1 from Saturday though!
-
Within half a mile of my house i have seen around 5 GTD's 3 GTI's & 4 R's
One of the GTI's is about 3 doors away same colour as my car but the guy's nephew prefers my GTD
-
See loads of GTDs, a couple of GTIs and a few Rs. Probably see more Rs than GTIs to be honest.
GTDs are obviously the most common because they're the best ;-)
-
3 other GTD's in my area - no GTI's or R's
-
In the work car park there's a 15-plate R, 15-plate GTI and my 15-plate GTD
In my flat car park there is mine along with a 15-plate Match
Spot the theme!

Around North Tyneside I regularly see a few white Rs, a Tornado red R and a Lapiz R (I caught the owner of the Lapiz one having a close inspection of my Prets when we were both parked up at the Odeon at Silverlink. He said he wished he'd ordered the Prets.
Lots and lots of GTDs, there are 4 that live in the few neighbouring streets to me, i'd say around a third of all VWs under 2 years old on the roads around me are GTDs. A GTI is a rare sight around my area though.
-
GTD's and .:R's are common as muck around here
-
If I turn left at the end of my road and head about a mile into the next village there are two if not three white R's just in that village.
Around my area I see so many GTD's I barely even notice them unless they have something about them that stands out. Many or most are just company cars and probably half of them are just visiting firms in the area as part of their working day so probably live on the motorway. If I had a company car there's little doubt that I'd be running a GTD too.
I see quite a few R's about locally. Some on private plates that look like they live in the area and others again are company cars passing through the area. Most of the R's I see are white or blue.
GTI's? There aren't many about. I regularly see two red ones, one of which lives around the corner from me and another in the next village. The ones around the Exeter area I see are nearly all white 5 doors but there aren't that many.
I see one GTE regularly in grey. I quite often see it so it must get a fair bit of use!
I spent a bit of time recently in the North West around Manchester and there were a lot more GTI's about than 'down south'. Lots and lots of GTD's too. A good few R's to boot and they were all being driven pretty hard!
Then I had to go to Middlesex for a flying visit and it was all GTD's.
Followed by a day in Cornwall which I saw two R's just heading down there (neither of which acknowledged me with so much as moving their eyeballs in my direction) and a few holiday maker R's parked up in various places, no GTI's and a smattering of GTD's.
-
I occasionally see a GTD but thats it. I haven't seen a GTI or R for ages.

You've been paying attention just a bit then Mr Ex.
You certainly seem to like your white goods in your far flung corner of the country   (sorry! payback for denigrating the wonder that is DSG )
PS: what happens if you turn right at the end of your road?

That's because it takes an eon to make one! Still bitter and twisted about the 9 month wait

Hmmm, turn right eh? I've never thought about turning right. Must try it sometime.
They all drive goats and donkeys out that way so best avoided!
Only joking! It's towards the city that way so just the usual mish mash of everything and it tends to be who's wearing the shortest skirt that tends to be more noticeable than what's parked up at the traffic lights (my hazard awareness training obviously coming through there).
PS. The only wonder about DSG is the wonder that people actually spend £1400 just so they can pick their nose and perform Michael Flately impressions with their redundant leg simultaneously!!!
Possibly.
You're quite right though, we do seem to like our white goods.
Must be to do with our monochrome vision (side effect of too much inbreeding)!!!

Mostly GTD here, a few R but almost no GTI PP. Guess people that can afford the fuel go straight for the R.
-
Mostly GTD and R ,with a few GTI - most appear to be well specced too - I guess that's Aberdeen for you, with lots of higher spec models or expensive cars going around.
I see at least 5-6 on my 60 mile round trip daily...but can see that many Aston or Porsche as well :D

And you've got proper driving roads up there. Makes these cars even more of a joy to own.
-
Definitely see more GTD's than GTI's about in general probably at about a ratio of 10 to 1 or 2 when I am out and about at work. Closer to home there is another R (LSG) I see and a white GTD too but no GTI's at all that I have seen :undecided:
-
I see more R's than anything else round my way.
-
I see lots of GTD's, hardly any GTI's and a couple of R's. All the R drivers refuse to look over and give me a nod, bar one - he was in a Lapiz Blue so maybe its a colour thing?!
-
I live in Cheshire but work in Greater Manchester. I'm not joking but R's are literally ten a penny. It's nuts! I put it down to 'lease-gate'! GTD's are most numerous followed by R's and lastly GTI's. So, that makes GTI's the most exclusive.. how ironic
-
I still remain baffled as to why VW allowed the R to be leased so ludicrously cheaply. It's devalued the R brand and clearly there was no need as the plaudits it's received from the motoring press would have seen it being a success anyway. If I had one I would be annoyed seeing so many on the road as you want it to feel a bit special and rare which it should be.
Instead because of leasegate you now have guys who were formely driving clapped out Clio's and Corsa's etc sitting in a car they would never have been able to afford. These guys are going to have a major problem when their lease ends and i would be intrigued to see what they end up in.
p.s. to answer the question I see hundreds of GTD's, at least one R per day and very few GTI's. Doesn't seem like it should be right but thanks to VW they've made the GTI rarer than the R

They'll just pull the dust covers off their SORN'd Clios and hit the roads again!
The canny ones will just pick up another cheap lease from whatever manufacturer is doing cheap sporty car lease deals at the time, the others will chalk it down to experience and just move on. Not all of them will have fallen in love with their R's. I think the plaudits from the press will keep the values pretty decent by mass produced throw away society car standards. VW tend to be pretty good for retaining value and hot Golfs even better (up to a point).
-
Always see a lot of GTDs in the Greater Belfast area but then quick diesels have always been popular in Norn Iron - which is what I'm hoping when it comes to selling the FR
Although I do play the 'spot the R' game when I'm with my youngster in the car - rarely make a journey without seeing one  - nice red one just moved in round the corner from me.
And I suppose the GTI seems to be rare these days as a lot of potential GTI drivers are driving the Golf R

Ok maybe not the best word to use. I don't mean financially but I'm instead referring to them becoming accustomed to the power and quality of the car. I can't see many other cars with the performance of the R being offered so cheaply in the future.
-
In my neck of the woods in cornwall, I have seen several GTD's and lately a couple R's. However apart from one time several months ago on the dual carriageway (A30) going in the opposite direction, I have not seen any other GTI's. I guess like others on this thread my GTI PP has become rarer and more exclusive in my local area than the R, which is mad when you think about?
-
My GTD is not only rare in my area but also rare in the whole of Ireland, as is the GTI and R.
In fact, high spec cars in Ireland are rare full stop..! 😄
-
Guy over the road got a GTD after me but has since traded it in. Guy around the corner now has one in the exact same colour. There is also an R around the other corner. My work / office is about 11 miles away and I regularly see a couple if GTDs en route. Around the office area I regularly see a couple of R's. If I ever drive through to Glasgow I always spot at least a couple of gti/gtd/R's. Before you ask, no I don't live in a VW garage or work for VW but it sure feels like it sometimes...
-
Thinking about this some more, I definitely see a lot more Rs than GTIs. GTD is only marginally more common than the R around here I would say, and GTI definitely the rarest.
Probably the same with the 1-series if you think about it. M135i very popular (partly due to cheap lease deals), 125d quite common but 125i rare.

A lot of that has to do with the huge (on paper) power difference between the R and the GTI and the closeness of the list price at launch, plus taking into consideration the lease deals as a massive contributing fact too it's hardly surprising that the GTI is a rare-ish sight on UK roads. I reckon with the improved spec and better deals on the GTI the numbers may increase somewhat but the GTD still looks a more attractive package for many buyers.
I don't think the mk6 GTI sold in huge numbers either and you see far more mk6 GTD's about which probably kind of sums up the average buyer in the UK of that size of car - they rely on their company car benefits in the main and that spells Diesel cars whose on road performance isn't massively behind, especially if you spend most of your life cruising A roads and motorways.
The mk5 GTI was a big seller and I think the mk7 R has taken over its mantle as the more sought after model with petrol buying enthusiasts.
-
Agreed, the Mk7 R has become what the Mk5 GTI was.

There is a massive power difference on the road to because of the traction.

Ill bow to your knowledge on that Lee as I obviously don't drive mine anywhere near its capabilities and don't drag race.
I've never been the biggest fan of 4wd cars I'm afraid. A winter with an R might change my mind though(?)
When I did track days I remember as soon as the heavens opened it was the Golf Rallyes that were the ones spinning off in front of me. And yes, they were in front of me!
My R has a lot more top end than my GTI granted, but I could hustle the GTI along pretty well in all weathers...
-
I've regularly seen around 4 or 5 different GTD's and 2 or 3 R's around my part of Leeds. Never any GTI's!
It's only annoying for me because I don't have mine yet and it makes me impatient every time I see one...
-
Came across another R today on way home from work. Very nice looking LSG one. That makes 5 now. Becoming a bit common, might have to paint a red stripe across the front of mine and pretend it's a GTI.
-
Maybe its just me but I think once you buy a particular car you then start to notice loads of them about.
I stay in the outskirts of Glasgow and drive into Glasgow for my work. I'm lucky if I see 1 GTD a week on my run. Literally no GTI's and maybe 1 or 2 R's I know there are more out there but they are certainly still exclusive where I stay.
-

Exactly this. Had a Kia 'Rio' while on holiday (awful car on every single level you can think of) and now I have been seeing them all the time. Never 'saw' one before that. It's what you're looking out for.
Also, must be area dependant. I see maybe one or two R's a month, that's it. Even less GTI's!
-
About a 12-13 MK7 Golf R's within a mile radius of where we live. Half a dozen GTDs and one GTI.
VW have certainly done a sterling job at flooding the market with their R brand. My guess on why VW has offered those super cheap lease deals is;
- VW wanted to stifle competition with cheaply leased R's.
- Get their R brand out there to act as a halo across the other models.
- Up-sell customers so they don't think twice when it comes to leasing a new R or Audi RS3 in the future.
- Keep their factories busy building the higher value models which they know they can resell in 2 years.
-

Not sure where abouts in Herts you are but there are a fair few Rs around the Hemel area. 1 less GTi now though :(

I think a lot of the cheap lease stuff was totally unintended by VW.
The R was a poor seller in mk6 guise and VW were having second thoughts as to whether to even bring the mk7 R to the UK according to interviews from top VW people when the GTI was launched. Whether this was marketing BS or not nobody will ever know but I can well believe it.
The leasing companies get promo deals on slow selling models just as the Scirocco R has had cheap lease deals recently, but what VW weren't expecting was the fact that the cheap deals went viral on the internet meaning they ended up inundated with orders and pulled the plug on a lot of them that were 'sold' to private buyers on business terms.
The long wait lists now suggest VW are keeping production down rather than ramping it up on the R model allowing them control of the used prices that still remain buoyant for dealers meaning VWFS get a decent slice from them several times over.
It is all being stage managed by VW and the rave reviews in the motoring press plus public awareness of the R brand that was pretty much invisible prior to leasegate will just add to VW's long term profits on the model as they ride the crest of a wave. The R400 must be a bit of a dilemma for VW UK at the moment.

Opposite end to you, I'm in North Herts. I see two in my town (LB and DBP), and I see a DBP and TR on the A1. That's pretty much it! And whenever I drive around in the day I don't see any!
