A sensitive subject in these parts I know... :D
Anyway, my dealer took in a brand new R for stock today. Built week 26. Fitted with continental Contisport5 tyres! Perhaps an anolomy but every R I've seen up to now had the bridgestones.
I've posted the pics I took here - http://www.vwroc.com/forums/topic/9939-post-bw22-car-on-contis/
-
Ooh, promising and so rare it warranted a pic! Maybe it's that legendary "luck of the Irish". Fingers crossed your R is shod likewise. When are you getting it? Must be soon now? Bet the rest of us still get the unmentionable rubber
I vaguely remember someone else on vwroc got their's on Conti 5s but that was a while back I think.
The tyres in your picture look like the non rim protection version.

Who knows, maybe VW are finally fitting these tyres instead. We'll need to see a few more post Wk22 cars to be sure!
My car went into production yesterday. I'd hope to see it land on these shores within 3 weeks. A lot of irish bound cars seem to land in even quicker than that but we have a bank holiday coming up and I reckon that could delay it a bit on this end.

Nice! I'm in the luxurious position that my company is owned by Continental AG...so its policy to replace any other tyres fitted with a Conti Brand!
(I wont be fitting UniRoyal's that for certain)

What a fortunate perk of the job!
It was suggested on vwroc that the 19" wheel delay may have actually been a 19" tyre delay - perhaps VW were sorting out supply with Continental and that's what took the time but others saying it was definately a delay with Pretorias, who knows? Very interested to find out what shoes the next crop of R's will come through with. I was kind of looking forward to trying out Michelin PSS for a change, as I've had Conti 5ps for last 3 years, but if my R comes with Contis then I will be very happy as they are an excellent tyre IMO.

Extremely unlikely. There's been no delays with cars here on the standard 19" Cadiz wheels.

Ha, yeah just read your post over there and amended my other post whist you were replying! Must have been the Pretorias then. It was wishful thinking, in the hope that we will get Contis. Can but hope.
-
ha ha, we'll cling onto whatever hope that's out there
To give you an idea of typical wait times over here, that particular car was only ordered in mid May - only 10-11 weeks ago! I ordered mine at the end of March.

So they are coming through much quicker now in Ireland? 10-11 weeks is super fast. You've had a very long wait. Mine was ordered end of Jan, currently still unconfirmed week 35, so maybe see it end Sept, begining Oct at the earliest. I got a bit upset with it all last week when dealer casually said it had slipped again, but what can you do? Not a lot! It's either wait or jump ship. It is madness for a Golf.

No, what I'm saying is that 10-12 weeks is the typical norm for Irish cars. My wait has totally been the exception! If I'd not spec'd the prets my car would probably have been here in late May but then I'd probably have missed the bw22 updates too.

Ah, sorry, I misunderstood.
There's an upside to your lengthy wait at least. And let's hope those Prets are also worth the wait for both of us, even better if they are encased in Conti 5s on arrival.

There are various Conti 5P tyres.
Some are B/F rated:

Some are A/F rated:

Some are A/C rated:

http://www.tyres-pneus-online.co.uk/car-tyres/continental/conti-sportcontact-5p/235-35-r19-91-y-xl-fr-r01.html
All rated at 72dB. So nearly just as noisy as the Bridgestones which are rated at 73 dB.
I wonder which ones will be fitted to the Prets?

The ones on the Cadiz I saw yesterday were stamped "A0". Presumably the 3rd one you've listed above.

That is a good sign.

I've got the R02 version on my current car and they have been faultless. Anything better would be a bonus. dB rating is fine, familiar with the noise, which is acceptable..
Of course VW may yet dash hopes :undecided:

Just had the fronts of my GTI changed to ContiSportContact 5's two days ago and all I can say is WOW!
The Crapstones were bald after 18,500 miles! Delighted they're gone, traction was appalling for what's supposed to be a 'performance car'!
On hardISH cornering now with a slight lift off I can really feel the rear wanting to come around as if the Bridgestones are on their limit - the Contis are superb and give a lot more confidence to chuck it in on empty roundabouts! :P
-
Was at my VW Dealer today. Brand new GTIs with 18" wheels are still coming with Bridgestones! Then I popped into Honda. The Type R comes with ContiSportContact 6P tyres in 235/35 ZR 19Y size.

Oh, if only the R would come with these!!! We really do do badly on the tyre front with VW! Maybe the Mk8 R will get them by which time Conti will be issuing the CSC 7P. Always one step behind
-
Asker, the Honda doesn't have 4wd so would fall out of your buying criteria and that alone.
I was just chatting to a guy with an R32 yesterday, he had just put on some Bridgestones I'd sourced him off a forum that had been removed from a new R. We were discussing the fact that all the UK cars seem to come with that brand and were trying to guess why.
I wonder if it has anything to do with VW's own testing and the fact that UK buyers don't tend to have winter and summer tyres so maybe the Bridgestones meet some criteria as an all year round tyre? Clutching at straws here.

Exonian - they are an all-seasons tyre in that they're slippery and useless in the Summer and Winter!

As luck would have it, just around the corner from my house was a 3 door white R DSG with 19" Prets and Conti 5P tyres.

Asker was it a brand new R? Is there still some hope?

Yes Rebecca, it was a brand new R with the 6" CMS (no shark fin aerial) and very shiny blackened tyres. Your hope levels should be sky high.

I am more hopeful than ever now! Thanks Asker, my sweet.
I still have little clue as to when I might get the car, (possibly shod with the much desired Contis 5). It's supposed to be (unconfirmed) build week 35, which if that became reality would mean I should get notification this week (I think), but so far zilch! Maybe tommorow?? Fingers crossed. My dealer salesman is on hols so no update from him.
Fingers crossed!

After seeing the Honda Type Rs and seeing a brand new GTI (in fabulous Carbon Grey) and the white R, the difference in build quality was really surprising. The VWs seem to be thrown together in comparison. Mine, thankfully, is now pretty damned good after much fettling, though there are still two more minor things to attend to.
Many of the posters on this forum would be up in arms at this assessment of mine. But what I saw, I saw. Even the guys at VW were pretty mesmerised with the Type R's superb build quality and finish. So was I. A British built car trumping those arrogant Germans with a vengeance. Good on you Honda in Swindon. Good on you UK!
So if Honda can do it, so can VW. Or can they? I for one am not too sure anymore.
Well, it's taking a very long time for VW to throw my bloody R together. The time it's taking I expect it to have been hand crafted by Archangels.
I don't disbelieve you about the quality of the Type R, but I think many would want to see it for themselves to believe it. I hope it is as well built as you say. The Germans have become very complacent, resting on their laurels and past reputation. They need something to shake them up. Maybe this is it?
I moved my post to the Type R thread.
But yes, VW really need to up their game. Like it or not, the Golfs are badly built cars in my view.
Comparing the R and GTI today to the 4 Type Rs was an eye opener. The Hondas had consistent built quality of the highest order. The VWs did not. Great pity.

lol, I moved my reply (obviously as you were typing). Best discussed in the Honda thread?
