After days of stress trying to find a answer i came across this forum. Will a mk3 golf 2.0l engine fit my mk4 golf? Can't find a answer anywhere :embarrassed:
-
don't see why not as I am pretty sure the early mk4 turbo engine had the same mounting points on the block as the mk3 engine. might have to mix n match a bit though. what engine is in mk4 at the mo?
-
Cant help but think its a backwards step.

just a 1.4 petrol at the minute

Plenty of complete cars out there with better performance for the cost of getting an older engine to fit and work
-
Not really answered my question has it?!

Sorry for trying to save you some cash in the long run
Don't forget its the electronic side of things that you need to sort too. By the time you are done you will have spent more than the car is worth and then devalued it at the same time
Try selling a MK4 with a MK3 engine in it
However to answer your question anything can be made to fit as long as you have deep pockets

What im getting at is, i have a full mk3 golf gti but currently driving the mk4, so i have everything i need. All i want to know is are the engine mounts the same etc or will they have to moved or extras put on?

Not worth doing, even as a project. Your mk4 will become unsaleable, plus it will cost you more than what it's worth to get it in, even DIY.
The mk4 is so heavy that even with a mk3 2.0 gti engine it won't be near as fast as a mk3 gti.... maybe a 1.6 100hp at best.

If you want a faster mk4 then flog yours and buy a 1.8t gti, you can get good ones for 1-1.5 k now :) Either that or get the mk3 on the road instead :)

if you are going to retain the original 1.4 gearbox then you only have one engine mount to deal with. mk3 engine mount fixes to subframe and mk4 mounts to chassis leg/inner wing. not sure how mk3 exhaust downpipe would get on with mk4 subframe though.
