Hi,
I have recently purchased myself a Golf GT TDI 170 DPF.. After a few days of driving, I had the dreaded DPF light and engine management light.. After plugging the car in, it is saying that the fault is with the DPF itself.. its running "below efficiency" apparently, which basically means its clogged up / on its last legs.
So... Looks like I have two options..
A) Take the car to a local garage, ask them to either clean (if possible?) or replace the DPF - which I understand could cost a lot of money.. and that problem could come back!
B) Buy the Milltek "DPF deletion pipe" and get it custom mapped, would cost the same as 'option A' plus I get more power and I'll probably feel more at ease knowing the DPF has gone. BUT.. the guy on the phone at a Milltek Dealer said that the PD (Pump Diesel) engine that I have, isn't as strong as the newer common rail version... so he may not recommend it?

Let me know your thoughts if possible. I have a 30 mile daily commute and often go long distance on weekends. I hate this DPF!! Worlds worst idea!!

Option 2 or you can have the innards removed from your current DPF and put it back on the car
My 170 has done over 45,000 miles without the DPF and apart from the inlet manifold leaking (common problem) and having the injectors replaced under official recall, it hasn't missed a beat
The car has covered over 90,000 miles in total and 60,000 of those have been mapped miles
-
Option B being illegal though, just saying.

In a visual sense yes hence why people now gut their existing DPF's. Diesels are still not tested on emissions and even then mine is within what would be acceptable
-
Thanks for the responses.
MOT'ers will only fail if they look for it and don't find it (cover is in the way anyway) plus if the emissions are too high *source: forum threads*... But like you say Rhyso, yours is fine and it seems like most others are too
Rhyso - did you get the Milltek? What is the performance / economy like?
-
No, no over priced tat in my car
Mine was custom made; car is running 205bhp / 320lbs ft torque
Economy varies but on a run I can see 500+ miles to a tank; the biggest dent to economy is my right foot
As with any car; regular maintenance will ensure many miles of happy motoring
-
Sounds good!
I'm afraid Milltek have my pants down, I have no other option..
After being quoted £800/£1000 quid for a DPF replacement by a normal garage, I have managed to get a quote of around £1000 for the Milltek DPF removal, ECU mapping blah blah, oil service, BMC filter and collection (trailer job) from a specialist.
3-4 lead time on the Milltek though
-
How much!!!????
How much is the Milltek??? I'd look for a local specialist exhaust place who can knock up a delete pipe and then someone to map it
Why does your car need to be trailered?? Is it not running properly??
-
That's what I first thought... But after speaking to around 4 specialist garages and 2 local ones, it seems that it would cost near the same to replace the DPF as it would to have the DPF removal done..
Milltek is around £400, then the ECU mapping, service, BMC filter and collection equals to about £1000 (inc vat).
The car has gone into limp, which apparently what happens if it can't regenerate or you don't try and regenerate in time... Plugged it in and its saying DPF so its definitely that.

There a specialist companies that can clean your DPF - for much less than 1000£.
This will remove around 90% of ash - so you should get an another 100k miles from it or so.

I would go with this option, way cheaper. Plus you'll be kind to the environment and humanity

And delaying the inevitable if the actual root cause is not found. Equally it doesn't always work.........
Sensor failure is a common problem so a full diagnostics session would flag up the exact problem

Hi,
A little update.. The car has finally been remapped and had the Milltek bypass pipe fitted, but hasn't been on a rolling road.. The car is quicker yes, but I am experiencing some coughing / juddering / loss of power for a millisecond when accelerating..
As far as I'm aware my injectors have been replaced under the recall..
Any idea of what could be causing this? Would a dyno and a few tweeks help to iron these spikes out?
Sorry I am a technical rookie...
Thanks, Harry

Hey
My GT 170 does the little stutter when it wants to start a DPF regen. Then I get a better throttle response & more power?!?
Have you had the ECU altered? I'm 99.9% you need the ECU altering, as it will still think it has a DPF. The change stops the regen cycle
p.s what is the remap like? I found my GT abit much & had the VW update map to reduce some BHP now at 164bhp, as a firm press on the load pedal just spun the wheels past 2500prm!!
-
That 'update' is a myth
There's nothing in the file to suggest they detune it when they replace the injectors. Besides your peak power is developed at just over 4000rpm
What tyres did you have fitted??
To answer the stuttering question; it could be a sticky EGR valve or perhaps the map hasn't been done properly. Who did the remap??
-
Hey Rhyso, think you my have mixed my reply with GTI Oxford.
I have had my injector recall in Jan 2012, but when my car was in for a service Aug / Sept 2014 I was told an update was out for my engine did I want it, so I had it done. It has made the re-gen cycle less aggressive it that the right word.
As for the tyres I had on Pirelli P1000 Sure they are Pirelli. I now get around 55mpg on the M6 (keeping up with traffic  )
Good call on the EGR valve, I will check it. Funny if after all this time I thought it was the DPF regen

First part was directed at you: second part was directed at GTIoxford
Pirelli are sh!te
EGR is worth cleaning out as it gets clogged over time and can affect the throttle response
-
Hi all,
I'm 99.9% sure its not the tyres, I haven't had the car long enough to put some premium ones on yet, these ones are Avons with good tread.
The map seems good, obviously I'd say it was bad if the map was at fault for the juddering.. The power comes thick and fast but seems to suit me. It was done by Viezu Berkshire, they're a Milltek registered dealer so I thought they'd be a good shout.
I have bought an uprated EGR gasket (the one with the smaller whole) as there is a lot of noise about the improvements on the PD170 it makes re: juddering post DPF removal.. Fitting tomorrow so I will update. Advice welcome :)
Thanks for your replies!
-
New gasket has made the car run a little smoother - definitely worth it, £3 it cost me.
Still juddering slightly.. Although (see new post) my fuel filter NEEDS changing. It hasn't been changed in 50k!!
Thanks
-
Ok.. So my car is still hesitating / juddering when I put my foot down or just go a little heavy on the metal..
I have so far:
1. Changed the EGR gasket to the one with the smaller whole
2. Replaced the fuel filter
3. Used injector cleaner
4. Confirmed with VW that the injectors were replaced under the recall
Possible problems?
1. Fuel pump?
2. Map?
3. An air leak somewhere
Any advice would be great :)

@OP
What are the actual fault codes?
Would be interesting to see what they are.
Can do for you when I'm in Oxford next time, unless you fancy a trip to Worcestershire....

There may not be any
You need to do a few 3rd gear runs and log a few things like boost, fuel injection, maf values etc
Equally I would take it back to the company and ask them to look at it; maybe even put it back to standard (DPF still mapped out obviously) and see if the issue still exists
-
Thanks both.
After I posted I took it back to the place where I had the map etc. done. They plugged in the VAG com and there were no fault codes. He then read and wrote a new map with some tweeks but it still does it.
I will probably look to see if I can get it back to its original state with the DPF mapped out as you suggested Rhyso :)
Also, itavaltalainen - thanks for the offer :)
It seems like its going to be one of those annoying problems, that could be something so small and annoying but could cost a few ££ to find and fix! 95% of the people would say its fine, but I'm one of those people that won't rest until its fixed!
-
Does it do it at any speed / gear?? Part throttle? Full throttle?
-
More so in 3rd gear (mainly) and all the gears above.. its when I put my foot to the floor it will sort of cough / judder two times and then power through..
Part throttle its okay as far as I know.
