She's had the car from new in 2000, but since being involved in an accident in their Octavia just before Christmas, it's really knocked her confidence and she doesn't feel safe in the Mazda anymore. She is looking to change it for something a bit more practicalish. Anything from a Mini to a Peugeot RCZ at the moment.
Anyway, the point of all this is what to do with the Mazda? 23,000 miles, UK car, 1.8, leather, hardtop, service history etc etc. A good days detailing genuinely would see this car looking like brand new. Nothing is worn out, as it's never been used. I would imagine she'll struggle to get more than £500 as a px, so it would be a shame for it to go into the trade.
I considered buying it for bit of fun, but we've got two kids and that will just cause arguments. I'm also mindful that I'm 45 year old and will look like a tit driving it. Besides, I never drive my Mk2, so having another car that I don't have room for would be stupid. Also, If I was to buy it and use it for a bit, it wouldn't be a 'one lady owner' anymore.
I'm not really sure what the point of this thread is as it's not an advert, or a what's it worth post, even tho' it's a really difficult one to put a price on. It's more of discussion thread, that will hopefully give me a steer as to what to do.
-
Either track car it, if you are that way inclined, or sell it private, it will fetch more than 500 and will be an easy sale IMO
-
a will give you 500 for it
-
Don't buy it yourself for all the reasons you gave. There's a plethora of MX5s where I work and not one belonging to a bloke, all middle aged women
Give it the full detailing works then find a private buyer.
-
Have to agree with booth good detail and flog.
-
The car is too good to track in my opinion. I'm so tempted to buy it, not to drive, but just to have it as it's a nice thing to own. People spend more money on watches that this car might be worth. I don't own a watch, so can kind of justify it as an indulgence.
One day I hope to have a house with enough garaging to house a small collection of 'ordinary' cars.
-
It's not really about justifying whether you should buy it, it's your money after all so your choice. If you do get it, apart from owning another nice car, what are you going to do with it? Will it sit untouched in a garage, or will you get any use from it. I can understand it if you're going to take it out for weekend spins or as suggested, use it as a fun track car, but if not, it seems a little pointless to me.
-
it seems a little pointless to me.
Which is why I used the watch analogy. Don't think of it as a car and there is no need to justify a use for it.
-
I get the watch analogy, I just don't agree. I also acknowledge people's desire to collect and keep cars as beautiful objects, as I might collect art or ceramics (if I could afford it) but a car isn't only a pretty object, it's (hopefully) a marriage of design and engineering and imo it's a waste to own a fun sports car such as an MX5, lock it away and never drive it.
Anyway it sounds like you made up your mind, so buy it and enjoy looking at it.
-
Haha wow. This thread has broken me. Normally I can pick a side and argue my point until the other person dies of old age. But here I can't decide which option is better/worse.
I get the watch thing. It's just a pretty thing to own, and hell, we fill out lives with pretty sh!t that we don't use (diamond ring, u wot m8?!) all the time. But I equally think it's just not quite special enough to have that claim (but I guess that comes down the preference).
If it was me (and I had the space) I would get over the girly stereotype and just enjoy it as a Sunday car. I've driven one, and they are fun. So why not?
-
Dubber maybe you should buy a watch instead. After years of not wearing one, I finally got sick of fishing around for my iPhone to tell the time, and bought a new watch last month. You know what, I'd forgotten just how bloody excellent they are for telling the time, and conveniently always to hand (or rather wrist) if you actually wear them. Cars I've heard are good for driving
-
My watch needed a new battery just before going away for weeks around 6-7 years ago, so I thought I'd sort it when I got back. I suppose I got used to not wearing it that I forgot all about the battery when we got back. In fact it was several weeks until I gave it another thought.
If you look around, there is probably always a clock of some description in sight. Sat at my desk, I can see one on the wall, the one on my monitor and my phone is less than a foot away. When I'm driving, there are 3 in my car, so I'm never short of a means of telling the time.
-
Watches are great I love em brought myself an omega 5 years ago when I was 40 same watch today nearly double the price mx5 sat outside collecting green mould moss rusty brakes not sure it's a wise purchase however if your going to drive it enjoy it and feel liberated well that's a different story
-
It wouldn't be sat outside Charlie. I do have access to somewhere warm and dry to store it, just not at home.
-
..to store it..
There's the key point. Store it till or for what?
Buy it, but drive it.
-
Got to agree with booth on this buy and use or clean and get rid
-
Store it, forget about it and your kids can sell it in years to come. Shame it isn't a MK1.
-
You sound like you are on my wavelength.
-
will still give you 500 for it

You know what you can do

Another car that's going to waste by the sounds of it, if what you said last week about losing all interest and stopping going to car shows is the case. So why do you want to add another one to the growing list of redundant cars?
-
Putting it like that, I really don't know. I'll put it down to a mental disorder.
-
Your mental disorder or mine
-
Sell it on for profit.
Buy stuff with money.

Like a watch
-
Quick question dubber. As the car belongs to your mum in law, what does she want? Does she want max money from a sale to put towards another car or something else or isn't she bothered? Would she like it to 'stay in the family'?
Btw I hope she wasn't hurt in the accident in the Octavia.

End of the day if I had the space and money to buy a few cars and let them sit, a MK1 MX5 and a MK2 Golf would be on the list to be sat there well looked after in the heated garage for years and I'd let me kids sell em.
Why the hell not?

Mine.

Btw I hope she wasn't hurt in the accident in the Octavia.
She can't bear the thought of a salesman rubbing his hands having got his hands on a peach of a car for very little px value. She has a attachment to this car and would like to see it go to someone else that would appreciate it, but obviously want's a decent price for it. Her husband is a Yorkshireman, so he'll influence the decision too  They are not looking at brand new cars, so the purchase of another one isn't dependent on the sale of the Mazda.
Neither of them were hurt in the Skoda accident thank you, but it has had an effect or her, triggering issues that came about following a different type of accident 15 years ago.

Are you prepared to give her a decent price then or will it be 'mate's rates'? Then again maybe not if there's a thrifty Yorkshireman involved. Yorkshirewomen on the other hand are known for their warmth and generosity
-
There's not likely to be any 'mates rates'. Nor would I expect there to be in this instance.

Nah, can't go short changing the in laws.
What colour is the car? So, is it going to be red golf; green golf and...MX5?
-
It's silver, so will match my Passat. It will be an opportunity to put our daughters number plate on it to save paying the retention fee each year. The deal's not done yet tho'.
I bought number plates for both kids when they were born, as I didn't think that there would be many single digit prefix plates with their initials on by the time they got to driving age. William's is on the red Golf and Ellie's on retention...at the moment.

The number plates for your kids is a really nice idea. Though I'm not personally into private plates, maybe I should have done something similar for my 8 year old daughter Katie, epecially as she seems interested in cars :undecided:
Yesterday as I was driving her to school, she asked me for some facts about the fastest road cars, names, bhp etc. When I enquired as to why she wanted this info, she said it's because her and a boy in her class (who's into cars), like to have car 'conversations' together! Should I be worried??
Anyway, you'll have a nice pair of silver cars then.

This mx5 thing is going on and on and on and on sorry to much Ben and holly  get it brought dubber get it cleaned and post a pic

I have a Swatch watch I got in Switzerland, free bee mind as it has a company logo on it

Why not try to sell it on an MX-5 OC?
Mention the reason for sale and that you'd want it bought by someone who will look after it rather than be a parts car or breaker. I'm sure if its as good as you suggest, someone into them will take a punt and lavish some attention on it? :undecided:
-
Put some Jap scene stickers on it to make it cool and put the price up by £500
Seriously though never miss a chance to roll on a "free" car for profit, even if you have some fun in it first

Problem solved... possibly. I have been talking about this on an MX5 forum and have someone coming a long way to view it at the weekend.
Things are moving quickly as she's found it's replacement. A Peugeot RCZ . Still better than Charlie's suggestion of a lumbering old Vauxhall saloon.
-
Isnt the RCZ quite a bit quicker than the MX5?
What makes her more confident in the RCZ than the MX5?

Good, I'll be able to sleep tonight now.
Watch this space for charlie's exciting new thread..."Me and my Omega...a true love story".
If only he had a nice golf gti to write about

The RCZ is about 160 horsepower, so not that quick, but even so, just because a car can go quickly doesn't mean it has to be driven quickly. I think it's more the feeling of having something a bit more solid around her.
-
Ahh okay, well yeah, at least she will be happy and behind a wheel again
-
Hope she feels safer in whatever she decides on. Good that she hasn't let it put her off driving completely.
-
Good to see you have got it sorted dubber. How many forums are you a member of  I've got a story about the RCZ do you want to hear it. Well here I go when they first came out I worked for psa and so every dealer had to have one as a demo. Well I had one for delivery to a dealer in East anglia I can't remember which one just that they are the laziest people I ever had the pleasure of delivering to. On this day I parked outside the dealer and normally you have to search for the salesmen because they have all ran away (work shy t??ts) anyway I got out of the truck and they were all stood there waiting staring at this nice shiny car. Know where is my omega

so you are selling it then why not just tell me my offer was not enough and you needed x amount for it rather than your snide comment

I can't understand why she'd chop it in for an RCZ, its a turd French car with plastic body panels.
Granted, I can see the appeal with regard to styling, but aside from the fact it has airbags, its still a small 2 seater and will ruin your day if in an impact.

I cannot see the appeal regards the styling. Isn't this the car unaffectionately known as the Aldi TT!
Agree it doesn't seem like it would afford much more protection than the MX5 if the worse should happen. Surely there's something better out there that will offer balance of solidity and styling. How about a used real TT?
-
It's not about how safe you ACTUALLY are, it's about how safe you FEEL. The RCZ in her opinion feels more sturdy, and as such safer. Fair game.
-

It's a false sense of security though. But I get your point, if she 'feels' safer (even if she isn't) then she'll most likely feel more confident. If it were me though, I'd still be aiming for something that would address both the ACTUAL safety and the FEELING safer.
-
I don't like the Peugeot either but she seems to for whatever reason.
There will always be French car slagging on a VAG forum, but having owned a 307 for 7 years. It actually wasn't a bad car. The only thing that failed was a the DMF under warranty and a blocked FAP (DPF) when it had done 70,000 miles. It's not as if those faults are unheard of in VAG circles. Plastic panels aside, I'm pretty sure it would still stand up in an accident as well as most other cars too.
This makes me sound like I like them, but I only bought the 307 because I couldn't afford an similar spec Golf at the time, and the reason I had it so long is that I'm too tight to suffer the depreciation, so made sure I got my monies worth out of it.
-
I drove lots of Peugeot and sh!treon cars through my job and we had a ds3 as a company car for over a year and to be fair they aren't that bad. I'm sure she will be safe in the RCZ
-
I had a peugeot 206 GTI for three years, and whilst not the most robust vehicle, it was fun to drive and very 'chuckable', especially round corners (perhaps a little too chuckable at times). When you really pushed on the striaght though there was an expectation it might just lift off at the rear
It was the peugeot customer service that put me right off having another  Then I crossed over to Golf gti's and the rest is history
Anyway, I hope she builds her confidence back up and enjoys her new car.
-
A new Polo GTI? Priced one up on Orange Wheels the other day (5 door, DSG, Sat Nav, Parking Sensors, Standard Interior) and the discount was £3.5k from memory. So the worked out to around 20k after discount.
-
She's got her heart set on the French thing now and for less than half that money. For a 'fun' car, I think she'd find the Polo a bit ordinary.
-
I had a 307 too. 1.6 Rapier, and it was genuinely the worst car I've ever owned, and I've owned a few bad cars! I had it at 5 years old, and the heater stopped working, then randomly just came on a month later, alternator failed, had to replace the lambda, and had another random electrical fault that would make it go into limp mode for about a minute, then clear itself. It wouldn't save DTCs either so despite 3 trips to the dealership, no faults were logged. Considering I had enough and chopped it in after 6 months, I think it tells you something that I had so many problems! Car only had 46k on the clock too and bodywork was in good condition, so I don't think it had a hard life previously. Incidentally, it was my mk5 Golf GT TDI I chopped it in for!
-
will post a picture of an rcz tomorrow after a 15mph crash she might change her mind
