Title: My Golf GTI MK7 - VWR R600 Intake Install
Post by: Mr Savage on 21 December 2014, 18:52
So as you are all aware I went down the Revo Stage 1 route with my GTI and it was great but it seemed that the standard airbox and most definitely the intercooler were incredibly restrictive now that the car was producing near the 300 BHP mark.

Here is the graph with just Revo Stage 1 installed;

(http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n158/Ranen_2006/photo-7_zps47f8ca77.jpg)

As you can see the best run measured 295.5BHP and 312LB FT of torque (on a different run). The dyno at Midland VW has proven time and time again that it is very realistic and if anything understates figures slightly unlike many!

Heat soak was a real issue on back to back dyno runs and this made me decide that the car would certainly benefit from a new intercooler and a new intake. So I decided to upgrade the intake first, a couple of clicks online and a few days later a big parcel arrives for me in the post...

The Volkswagen Racing R600 Intake! :)

I booked the car in with Chris at Midland VW and headed down last Saturday and as soon as I arrived he got straight to work.  :grin:

The first thing we did was get the car secured down on the rolling road and did a run with the standard airbox and the bonnet closed to simulate real world driving conditions the best we could. The results were 286BHP and 300LB FT of Torque.

So then it was time to install the R600 intake and see what difference this actually makes!

(http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n158/Ranen_2006/photo1-6_zps3be2004d.jpg)

With this being one of the first R600 Intakes in the country it came with no instructions but it was relatively straight forward keeping most of the fittings that are already on the standard airbox, before long it was starting to take shape;

(http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n158/Ranen_2006/photo2-5_zps79cead63.jpg)

A few screws later and all was finished;

(http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n158/Ranen_2006/photo3_zpsea364142.jpg)

The installation was actually so fast that the car still hadn't fully cooled down from the earlier stock runs! So we waited around 20 minutes before getting back in and giving it another 3 back to back runs on the dyno, the results were....impressive to say the least, the dark blue line shows the stock intake run, the pink line is the car with the VWR Intake installed and the bonnet closed and the light blue line is with the bonnet open and the VWR intake installed.

(http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n158/Ranen_2006/photo-10_zps6bd5829e.jpg)

Now the car is consistently hitting over 300BHP. One run measured 314.7 which isn't on this graph sadly and even more impressive was the increase of 22 pound foot of torque!

Compare the results with the best stock run we ever had with the bonnet open on Stage 1 and we can see that we have gained 20BHP and 10-11LB FT of torque just from an intake and most importantly a 10 degrees C drop in temperature with the VWR intake! To say I was pleased is an understatement! :laugh:

Video of the sound from outside;

It was a windy day so i'm afraid the video isn't the best of quality but you get the idea.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANeZ_o8Ek8E

Inside you can barely hear the sound, but under hard throttle with the radio off you can hear a very quiet rush of air. I'll try and capture it and put the video up once I do but i've had no luck with that yet! Sounds nice though, even though it's quiet.

Very impressed with this intake and can certainly recommend it to anyone. It's rated up to 600BHP so will continue to give bigger gains as you move through Stage 2 and beyond. Fantastic service from Chris and the guys at Midland VW as usual :)

Very impressive,what does it feel like out on the road compared to stock.

The car feels a lot more responsive under throttle and much more torquey from 3000RPM onwards and holds it strong. It feeds the power very well and doesn't seem to have had any detrimental affect on traction at all. You can definitely feel the gains high up in the rev band too.

Looks great I have revo stage 1 too thinking about getting the VWR R600 Intake. Can you tell us where you got it please.

Looks really good under the bonnet too! It could do with a colour decal on it or something to highlight the R logo.

I can't praise it enough. The power is incredible to say it's only Stage 1 with an Intake. I'll be very interested to see what happens once a new intercooler is fitted before a new downpipes and stage 2 software :laugh:

I found this website, I know it's not strictly accurate but gives a rough idea which I found interesting...

Based on BHP per ton of course. :evil:

1276kg is somewhat optimistic, you're looking at a minimum of 1350kg unladen, so close to 1475kg with driver and a full tank of petrol. See here: http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/new/golf-gti-vii/which-model/engines/overview (http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/new/golf-gti-vii/which-model/engines/overview)

That puts a dent in the 0-100 of 1 second... still impressive though...

Pleased i found this. i was speaking to chris about this on friday when i was having my V10 map. It would be very interesting to see what figures you get with the V10 map and the intake as I'm sure you will see even better figures! how is the intake now you've had some use of it?

Would certainly be interesting to see the results of the intake with the V0010 software, although with the impending arrival of the R I'm not sure Mr. S is going to update the software, which means you'll need to convince the missus she needs an intake Dan :laugh:

What exactly does V10 of the software change? Haha, well I'm often near you Chris so might be worth me popping by one day if it's any good! But yes with the arrival of the R due in September it does make it seem a little pointless!

The intake is brilliant still. Nice sound that's not too intrusive/loud and the car breaths much better and it's some nice, linear power gains all the way through the revs. :)

Chris will be transplanting the R600 intake into the R when the Stage 1 gets applied, he just don't know it yet :D

Didn't want to start a new thread for this question.

Ordered a R600 with the turbo inlet, was wondering if anyone know what lubricant should be used on the O-Rings on the turbo inlet elbow? Would rather make sure than use the wrong kind and let them disintegrate. Assuming just multi-purpose synthetic grease like below?

Ideally you want a silicone based lubricant which won't swell the rubber like a petroleum based one would.👍

I just used a bit of the oil that was in the old elbow.
