Title: Running In new GTI
Post by: caprigreen on 17 August 2014, 08:47
Good Morning everyone.
I have ordered my GTI PP and will be collecting from a dealer in Gillingham in November. he only problem is I live in Cornwall so have over a 300 mile trip home. I have read various post about how to run in an car with the main focus on not reving too high and avoid constant revs. This is my problem as there is a lot of motorway back to Cornwall. I can break up the journey as I will stay with family overnight in Berkshire which is 80 miles from the dealer then 250 miles home to Cornwall the next day. Any advice on how I should drive the car home ?

Steve

Morning Steve

I had the same journey back to St Austell last November when I collected mine from JCB Medway, M25/M3 to Basingstoke will probably be busy so plenty of stop/start and varying the revs, then take the A303/A30 all the way back to Cornwall. Its quit a nice drive back, and by then the A30 won't be full of caravans so you can have a bit of fun, I'm sure I drove all 300 miles with a massive grin on my face

Hi,

That's the same dealer I am buying through (drive the deal 12% discount) I am in Mevagissey so the same trip. Sounds like you just drove normally and the traffic gave you the varied revs. I suppose I can just avoid long periods at the same revs and use 4th 5th and 6th on the motorway to keep the revs varied a little.

Don't worry about it, that's what warranties are for. Just enjoy the car.

Good point, first time I have brought a new car and will probably keep it a few years so wanted to do it right.

The 600 mile round trip to collect it was worth it for the discount, Carrs @ Indian queens would only give me 1k off.
Just make sure you tell dealer not to clean it, they covered mine in swirl, didn't notice it on collection day, only next day when the sun was on it did could I see what a mess they made of it.
I'm only up the road from Meva so if you fancy to test drive then PM me

As Ginge says 'don't worry about it' just enjoy the first drive, I know I did. I bought mine from probably the same dealer in Gillingham and drove it back to Cheshire in one go. Loved it. Biggest smile ever getting the know the car.

Your overnight stop over in Berkshire will suit things perfect. Give the engine chance to cool right down and then start agin the next day.

Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy best feeling I the world (after the birth of my son obvs)!

I bought mine from JCB as well and drove it back to Glasgow.
Asked them just to take the protective sheets off and jet wash it. It doesn't make for an exciting handover but at least the paintwork will be okay

When I asked on here about my drive home, I was advised going the motorway was probably the worst thing for a brand new engine as I should really be varying the revs. So with that in mind I would slow right down in 3rd and accelerate up through the gears.  Other drivers near me must have thought I was crazy

I think as long as the oil is up to temp and you and revving the nuts off it, it will be fine.

I never noticed a paint defect until I was all the way home so inspect the car very carefully!!

Once warmed up, I thrashed mine hard up and down an A road for 20 miles. Time will tell.

I was a very disappointed with Carrs, they were not rude but when I mentioned the 12% discount they told me to take . Did not even ask me to sit down drove over from meva and was in there 45 seconds ! If the had offered 10% they might have got a deal. That's over 50k between us they have lost who knows how many more.

Anyway looks like I will just enjoy the drive and try my best to vary my speed and revs.

Thats interesting about the paint heard a few say that don't let them prep the paint. Might take it to my paint man man when I get home

The dealer never inflicted the paint damage. It came like that from the factory. Almost looks like rust is bubbling underneath it!!!

I will look out for that but often you don't notice theses things until you wash the car. I will be 330 miles from home with no transport so have to be bad for me to refuse but cant get any defect recorded.

I also had an odd experience with Carrs at Indian Queens in Cornwall.  I am suprised they are still operating.  March last year when the first order books for the GTI were opened. I went in to Carrs and had already been to other places before them.  I asked them if we could do a deal on the price and they said VW policy do not do any deals, the price is the price and that's it.  I said i had seen others who had knocked a few quid off on first orders, but Carrs still told me 100% price or not interested and to go elsewhere.  It was as if I was bothering them by trying to give them my money, very odd franchise.  I ended up getting my car from Mann Egerton in Exeter and the service for me has been first class.  The customer service from the franchise is part of the experience of buying a new car.

Yes I find it odd that I went into the showroom with 25K to spend and they did not even ask me to sit down. I have found the service side pretty good but the sales have that bit of arrogance. I did get to about 6% discount offered last year when the GTI first came out. When I mentioned 12% from drive the deal this year they smiled through gritted teeth and told me to take the deal and goodbye. A bit of a shame as like to keep my money in Cornwall. The Exeter dealer through Carwow offered around 10% and was great to deal with but I took the extra £700 discount and will travel to collect my car and enjoy the 330 mile trip home

You must good at striking a deal to get 6% offered.  I tired the same tricks in the book and they would not budge from 100% price.  Enjoy the GTI.  I have a GTI PP in Oryx White.  It is an awesome car to drive.  It is still the only GTI I have seen in North Cornwall so far?  However there are lots of GTD's.

Might have been a bit less and was on a GTD at the time to be fair. Mind you the chap I dealt with is not there anymore ! I have ordered PP pure white but unsure as red looks stunning. Love Oryx white and will be rare due to the cost.

Can let you have a look if in the local area.  It looks stunning in Oryx White with the red accent around the front and red brake calipers.  To be honest Pure White is the same paint as Oryx White just that Oryx has an extra lacquer on top to add the pearl effect. In certain light you would be hard pressed to noticed the difference between pure white and oryx.  It's only noticable when you get a bit of direct light hitting the paint allowing the speculaity of the pearl effect to do it's thing. To back up my statement, I bought Oryx White spray can the other day and it comes in a set of three cans, one is Pure White, the others are laquer and pearl effect coating.

So pure white is not far off having Oryx anyway. Enjoy the car, you will not regret choosing the white either, trust me

I like colour contrast and like you say the white will set off the red badges, callipers and black grill. Just a little concerned that the white will not shine that well. Anyway the best part is driving !

I had a completely white Civic Type-R Championship White prior to my Golf GTI, even the wheels were white.  Believe me when I say it will shine very well when in daylight.  The white on my Civic when the car was clean, was literally blinding, and it was a standard paint which was a creamier off white than the Golf.  If you are in doubt of it not shining as much as you would like take a look at the threads regarding cleaning your car the right way and give it a polish.  Some of the cars on these threads look like the paint is coated in glass they are that shiny.  However if you want a mirror like finish so you can see your reflection and wish to polish it regularly dark colours will provide a more mirror like reflection.  But personally I have owned black, red and white cars,  White wins out every time for me.
