Title: Is it me or does the GTD & GTI look nicer than the R?!
Post by: Duroo72 on 14 August 2014, 18:45
All in the title really, planning my GTD replacement and the R isn't winning me over yes it's faster but I'm just not feeling it! I'm not worried about the MPG my heart is ruling my head on this one.

I agree that the R is subtler at the front end. What about an S3? Bored of the GTD already? Will be considering my next car (probably an S3) maybe at 2 years old, if I'm comfortably in a new job (redundancy calls next June, 2.5 years wages lumper).

No it's not just you...

Although appearences are subjective.

This is all subjective

I personally had a look at the R and Audi S3 and thought the GTI was nicer looking and better for my needs. It was also lighter and not 4WD so all in all it worked for me/us. I think the R32 and Mk7R have a "thing" about them that i can't put my finger on but its not to my liking, but not sure what it is, perhaps its the 4 exhaust or the deeper sides skirts.  I don't dislike them at all, but if i had to pick a car in a line up, it would still be the GTi. imo

S3 is exactly whatbim looking at for come a year in november. Red s3 round corner from me looks "nice" but saw a silver s3 with red callipers and tinted windows...looked unreal. Id like an r vut I will never in a million years go from ine golf to another, let alone any other model. Done it before and my god you get bored quickly. Quite keen to see the new a5 when it gets a facelift

I think the GTI/Gtd look better than the R, but in comparison to the S3 saloon... Mmmm

Yes I'm bored unfortunately I've had it since January and been everywhere in it - Scotland, Wales , Isle of Man amongst others. I've notched up just over 20k so far and I think I want togo faster now!

I'm glad it's not just me on the R looks then, the one I saw this week parked at Grosvenor Square looked especially unattractive with a parking ticking stuck to its screen!

Nice looking car,  out of interest what would you guys be paying monthly on an S3 mine would be a company car and tax wise including petrol would probably £350 month but that's everything, is that excessive compared you guys buying or leasing? Remember I would have no capital in the car at the end of the term it's all tax!

Most wouldn't have capital after 2 or 3 years ownership of an S3, or a GTD/GTI or R. These cars are generally bought on finance (some will buy outright to save the interest, but they'll still probably sell on after 3 years) or leased new and run on their depreciation then given back or part exed. Class leading residuals are what keeps ownership on cars of this price and calibre surprisingly low (and your interest payments if you're buying on finance surprisingly high).

I will be able to go out and buy an S3 easily with my redundancy next year, but if I can lease one for less than £280 a month (+ initial payment) then i'd probably be better off leaving the money in the bank (on the assumption I buy at 10% discount and it's worth £19-20k after 3 years - speaking to Audi dealers, that seems like a fair assumption).

So perhaps £350 incl fuel p/mth is not too bad......

I like the R for the same reason as my GTi - it is desecrete. The R is the ultimate Q car, with externally little hint of what it can do...

I love the discrete look of the r, but I do think vw have ruined the r brand by giving polo's, passat, etc the r line name, if you asked most people which was the flagship car they would say the gti.

I'll come out in favour of the R looks-wise.

I like that it's understated from the front and shows it's intent at the rear (even if quad exhaust are overkill)   Those 'in the know' will know what it is, even though some may mistake it for a normal golf.  I do think elements of the front end of the GTI  look sportier, but I cannot bring myself to like the red stripe running through the headlights, although it looks better on some colours than others.   The GTI front with the R rear would have been the perfect marriage.

Biased? Maybe?

But think on just plain looks the GTD is best looking of the GTD/GTI/R and mainly because of the wheels and way the chrome stripe blends so well opposed to the red.

Think the front of the R is quite bland and lets it down, but backwards from that to the 4 pipes it looks great

Think MK7 looks at its best in 4 door regardless of model.

300 BHP 4WD and the Lapiz Blue would have me overlook that one bland feature and seriously considering an R next time around

Yeah I've got to agree with that. I appear to have brought my kids up (they are now all over 18) shouting R32, R, GTI any time we see one  Anyway my boy came home from work the other day and was quite excited he had seen an R Polo. Turns out it was the R Line.

So yeah I can see where you are coming from.

Haha, you're not alone.  My 7 year old girl does the same thing on virtually every drive.  Think we're projecting our passions onto our kids just a bit

Worse still, she makes me drive down the road where all the dealerships are so she can decide what car she wants when she's old enough to drive, only 10 years to go

The thing about the Golf GTI is that it's a Golf GTI.

Its a motoring icon and so many different types of people love it. Me included.

The R is faster, the GTD is more economical but to me the GTI is just brilliant at everything.
My teenager kids even ask to be given lifts...

The R is definitely lacking a sporty front end (for rear view mirror presence), but that back shouts performance. The car should be one thing or the other - immediately obvious performance or a real wolf in sheeps clothing (Used to love the sleeper looks of my old boss's Ford Granada Scorpio Cosworth many years ago).

Can't wait to see if they bring out an RS3 with 8 exhausts.

Mate those are my sentiments too. Is it too understated at the front is there something I am missing god knows wouldn't mind a test drive in one.

I test drove an R yesterday in Lapiz Blue. I guarantee the last thing you'll give a toss about is what it looks like when you're in sport and race mode compared to a GTI or GTD. Didn't want to give it back!

Yes, the GTI looks much better from the front. But the speed and noise from the R.....

In the works car parks either side of were I work I can see out of my window a dark blue R on one side and a grey GTI on the other. I was never a fan of the Rs looks but seeing this one everyday it has really grown on me apart from the silver mirrors!
The GTI just hadn't.   My personal view is the GTI has gone too tarted up and is trying too hard. Were as the R is more descrete and classier which is what the GTI imo use to be.

That would look so much better on the dark blue. Not liking the silver at all.  I just smile when i see this R as so many people at work keep mistaking it for my mk6

Saw a Lapiz Blue R in flesh Sunday at Wayside St Albans and thats me pretty much sold even if still about 18 mths from ordering.

None of my overall thoughts have changed, the front looks the most bland of the GTD/GTI/R and my not being sure of 4 exhausts has been replaced by loving the rear

Did not realise the front scoops were so deep and think they missed a trick with maybe not having these in chrome to match the chrome on the wing mirrors as would give depth and definiition to them where there is now none.

Was not sure about which wheels from photis but think now prefer the Cadiz wheels over the upgrade Pretoria as think there is too much openess of the spokes and its just too much disc on show and when they get the day to day rust they will not look so pretty

It was a cloudy day so the Lapiz Blue did not sparkle but loved it even looking quite flat.

Not a test drive and did not see on day but as cherry on the cake love the twin DRL and to have 300BHP and 4WD to put that power down is the game breaker.

Quite boring really knowing spec of car 18 mths ahead and also in that time driving a very similar car for much of the time, but if happy why change for change sake?

As keeping the GTD a far less sensible spec  3 door Lapiz Blue DSG DCC Winter Pack

PS: They had a really nice white 3 door GTI MK6 with lovely wheels in showroom for £18k - Got so used to MK7 spotting that forget MK6 is car be more than happy with too

Perhaps in a couple of years time there will be a mid cycle facelift to the R which will make it a touch more aggressive. That's what I'm crossing my fingers for.

Think you likely summed it up, many have MK7 so the styling thing will create some opinion in comparison as make general comment but would soon evaporate as push that right foot down

The sleeper looks of just hinting at capability is very much car that prefer and pretty convinced on R and would need something special that not seen yet to change mind now

Though not a game breaker that would be good as cannot wait till MK8 R arrives (2017-18) so its this R or nothing as we stand (dismissed the S3 as would have to be a manual and no DCC and want both DSG & DCC)

S3 comes in manual and S-tronic, along with Audi magnetic ride (instead of DCC). The magnetic ride is part of the standard equipment on the saloon, which means it'll not lose you 80% of cost - as are 19" wheels (depends whether you like the S3 saloon, but apart from the colour (white - it would have to be Sepang blue for me) I loved the one at DTUK).

Admit to not realising that and my statement was from knowing have to spec nearly everything wanted when looking at A3 S line last time around - Still think the base price will likely be too rich for me and having seen a few A3 today am still as apathetic about them.

Will have a look at S3 at the time as going to see these cars is part of the fun but minds pretty set and as relaxed as ever been about car choice.
