I had a call from my local dealer advising me that after a 9 week wait my warranty parts are in. (Spoiler and turbo rod actuator clip) and im booked in to get those fixed whilst they investigate my poor idle and crap first gear, that git me thinking. I dont think I would buy this car again given the chance
Just wondered if you would buy the same car again given the same choice.
-
At the time of wanting to order my GTD, there was no viable alternative for me. My Scirocco had been very practical for a 3 door coupe, as much as I liked the TT, only having one car in the household, it needed to be reasonably practical, and I knew the MK2 TT was on its way out anyway. GFV was important for me too, it would be hard for me to shell out for a car with massive depreciation no matter how good it drives. I also think that the best drives are behind us now - electronically adjusted everything in very up to date cars dulls the drivability somewhat and there is very little in the way of thrills to be had doing legal speeds - sturdy new cars are so sterile these days.
As a semi-fuel miser (I can put up with poor/average diesel economy to put my foot down and have some fun, rather than drive like a nun to glean an extra 5mpg), it was always going to be diesel.
When I got my GTD I was impressed with every aspect of the car but the performance, it seemed no faster than my Scirocco 170TDI, and those sh!tty Bridgestones - what a crime. VW created an athlete and then shot him in the knee when they shod my car with those abysmal tyres.
Performance disappointments have been overcome with the DTUK box. If I hadn't taken the plunge with that, my car would probably still be a mild disappointment on a daily basis on that score (although initial grip with my tyres is an issue i'll live with because i'm too tight to spend £240 on a set of fronts to replace unworn Bridgestones).
My next car will probably be an S3, or maybe a MK3 TTS. I think there is no middle ground for me and mpg, either i'll get 50mpg and have decent performance or i'll say "to hell with mpg" and be looking for significantly more than a GTI can give for just a little more thirst than the GTI.
-
I wouldn't buy mine again purely based on the amount of warranty problems I have had and slight disappointment with the performance on a daily basis. Generally a decent practical car and mpg isn't bad, but if I could choose again I would buy a M3. I'm hoping once my warranty work is done and I get my APR tune I may change my mind.
-
I would buy our GTI again......it does everything very well and doesn't make a song and dance about it. We have had zero problems and not been back to the dealer since delivery.
I'm a serial modder and the Eibach springs with the DTUK module has made it almost perfect for our needs.

Very good question. Overall the GTI is a very accomplished car and with all the features you get as standard, it's fantastic value for money especially given the fairly generous discounts to be had. I've said quite often though that I'm disappointed with the performance and still maintain that the car should have been offering 250-260 bhp considering that's its hot hatch rivals are all at this level.
Similar to MH, the new GTI just happened to come along when I was looking to trade in my TT and the options were somewhat limited considering the budget I had set myself. In hindsight I wish I had waited those extra 6 months for the R. Apart from the subdued looks, the R just seems to tick all the right boxes.
I would love to get into the new TTS but your looking at a starting price of £40k so I don't see that happening. So I'm probably looking at an R, S3 or M235i as my next purchase in 2 years.
-
Definitely yes!
It's a car that does everything well. When I was looking at changing my last car (tuned Mk1 Astra VXR) , there were only really 2 cars that I considered that were within budget and I actually liked the look of. These were the Mk2 Astra VXR and the Golf GTI. I think I definitely chose the better of the 2 (especially as I specced the PP making up some of the performance advantage the Astra had).
If I was choosing now, I'd still have these 2 choices but would also have considered the Leon Cupra 280 and the Golf R, but still think overall I'd have chosen the GTI as the blend of performance/style/cost/practicality/features seems to suit me best.

The GTD is a good car all round, but the road noise at motorway speeds on longer journeys is my biggest gripe....
My previous car (BMW) had 255/40/18s and was considerably quieter. Even people at the other end of the phone keep asking me if i have the window open. I would say at 65 the golf generates the same road noise as the bmw does at 85.
I would only buy again if this is sorted, or the car is fitted with active noise control to cancel out the cabin noise.

That's funny, mine is remarkably quiet - but I have Pirelli tyres on the 19s and adaptive chassis. I've done 300 mile journeys in mine with not a single complaint, but then I had a TVR Cerbera and have a stripped out 306 Rallye lol. Neither are anything like quiet.
I would buy my GTD again. I waited and bought exactly the spec I wanted, it is my first ever new car. It does everything I want it to do, it's great to drive, and i've had no issues other than a dealer than managed to scratch it inside and out.
-
I got a great deal on mines from the dealer down side it was a stock car with no option other than DBP paint if I had to choose would add keyless the 19s and maybe the PP.
-
I'm really pleased with my PP GTI. The only thing I am hung up on is whether I would have preferred an R (which wasn't out, or even previewed I thinke, when I ordered).
In the R's favour, its fairly easy to lose traction in the GTI under harsh acceleration and 4wd should fix that. More power would be fun, too.
In the GTI's favour, the fuel consumption is better less bad than the R, and I'm not sure if I could cope with an even smaller boot and the loss of the dynaudio. I also don't like the looks as much.
I'm currently thinking about getting a box from DTUK, and the bridgestones won't last forever - maybe other tyres will help with the traction. Overall I'm very pleased that I chose the GTI.
-
The only mistake I made was to quick to opt for the GTD when I really wished id gone for the GTI. The car looks great and is by far the best looking in its class in comparison to the new A3, BM etc. However, its a great car; drives well, sturdy, quick for what you need and is still a hell of a head turner. So yes, I would order the GTD again.
Only thing that still p*sses me off to this day is how the A3 s line comes with the leather seats as standard. I believe Audi drivers have to pay £500 odd quid for the keyless option which is ridiculous
-
I opted for yes, but to change some optional extras. I love the car I've specced, but I would try to find the extra cash to go for the Performance Pack next time round. 80% of the time I don't miss it, but it is that occasional B-Road blast when the front struggles to get the power down out of bends that I wish I had it.
Only other thing I would go for is the PRO nav (I only have standard Discover Nav) as I would like the big screen.
Other than that, I'd have this car again in a heartbeat.

I would love to get into the new TTS but your looking at a starting price of £40k so I don't see that happening. So I'm probably looking at an R, S3 or M235i as my next purchase in 2 years.
I've heard nothing but rumour about the TTS price. The VAG group generally hold to an exchange rate of 1.20-1.25 Euros to the pound to compare Germany prices to UK prices. You can configure the 2.0TFSI (230ps) and the 2.0TDI (184ps) model on the Audi.de website now. There are no indications as to TTS price right now. The 2.0TFSI (230ps) TT starts at 35k Euros, which should be around £28-29.1k, only £700 - 1800 more than the GTI PP with the same output. I would be very surprised to see the TTS at more than £35k unless it is packed to the gills with equipment that is optional on the base models. With the comparison of GTI PP to GTI PP, the German model appears significantly cheaper, but the equipment level is sparse compared to the UK. By the time you get the German spec up to UK levels of equipment, you are talking over 33k Euros, or an equivalent exchange rate of 1.20 Euros to the pound.
If it were £32k, it would make the TTS over an S3 a probability for me, if it were £35k but packed with around £3k's worth of desirable equipment that doesn't come with the S3 and better residuals than the S3, it'd just about be still in contention. I really can't see the TTS being £9k more than the S3 with an extra 10ps, i'll believe it when I see it for 48k Euros on the German site (or 44k Euros with a very sparse equipment list, lower than UK equipment expectations).

The 2.0l TT S-line quattro DSG has a base price of £35k so im fully expecting the TTS to be £40k minimum. Audi have definitely pushed the TT brand up a notch so it's almost in direct competition with porsche. The TTRS will be hitting £50k i suspect.
The UK configurator is up and running

Wow - it's the Quattro being completely tied in to S-tronic now that's really bumping even the base models up. Don't want S-tronic, would probably have Quattro if I could get it on its own. Makes quite a difference to the 0-62 time - 5.3s with Quattro and S-tronic, 6.0 without. S-line would probably do me, with parking sensors, but the price of those is taking the piss a bit. If Audi's prices put it in line with a Cayman in the upper (TTS/TTRS) specs,i'd rather have the Cayman every time. If the Residuals are stronger than the S3, it might be worth it. Audi's GFV figures are extremely cautious. I was looking at the S3 the other day and was given a quote with 55% GFV (although the dealer seemed to be tweaking it, like it had some discretionary tolerance), amounting to £17600 with £1200 of extras, although he indicated that a tidy 30k miles/3 year old variant would probably be giving a p/x allowance of £3k over and above that GFV.

I clicked 'Yes' as I love my car. The grip is brilliant, it's a joy to drive, and I have fun in it every day. It's the best GTI yet IMO.
But....I sort of wish I'd waited for the R as I get sh!tty mpg (31 average after 15k miles) so I might of well had the extra power and give even less of a toss about petrol consumption that I clearly all ready do!

If I had the foresight to see Rs could be leased for as low as £240 a month over 2 years + initial payment, i'd have waited and got behind the wheel of an R.

Yup, my thinking exactly.
Also, I just specced the new TT, 2.0 quattro S-tronic with some extras - came to £38,500 - well you can get an DSG R £6k cheaper than that (list price) with the same extras and it's a lot quicker. I know Audi are going for a more exclusive price, but really? I'd expect to pay £40k for a TTS but not for a billy basic 2.0 litre

I answered no but my answer has probably been influenced by the fact that I also own a 3.0 ltr v6 r line touareg which I purchased a few months ago and is a much nicer and more comfortable place to be . The MK7 does not look anywhere near as nice as the MK6 did( imo) and is quite bland, dont get me wrong the MK7 is a good car but not a great car and despite the hype does not do anything the MK6 couldn't .
-
If I were to buy a car again, I would definitely go for the new Renaultsport Megane. That was my option when I bought the GTI as well, but the price put me off as the GTI was cheaper and I also got a big discount through carwow. Also the GTI comes almost fully speced as standard while on the Megane RS I had to add a lot of optionals to get it to the GTI level.

A French car puts me off full stop

Have to say I wouldn't get another GTD. Much as I like the car the thing that really hacked me off is how terrible the fuel consumption is. The only reason I got a GTD was the fuel economy being better than my mk6 which it isn't by a long shot. It's not like I even trusted VW's phenomenal mpg claims I got the car in the knowledge I should easily be able to get 50mpg without having to drive like a paranoid nun. I'm averaging 42.8mpg and no matter what I say to VW they can't find anything wrong with the car to cause poor fuel efficiency. Even though I drive fairly sensibly I just can't get the average mpg to go up much. Next car definitely won't be a GTD.

How are you getting on with the Touareg? Obviously quite a different beast to the Golf? With an expanding family and dogs to accommodate I've been eye'ing these up to replace the GTD in a couple of years.
Back on topic... still love my GTD 1 year and 16k miles on. Great everyday car. Now more fun and comfortable with the DTUK box and a recent set of Goodyear EfficientGrips all round. If I could get away with a car this size again I'd probably give DSG and the S&S pack a go.
-
I voted No and although I have this company lease car for another 2 years, I wouldn't choose the GTD again afterwards although I do love the look of it outside and in, the performance is a little disappointing TBH.
Thanks to this site though and fantastic insight into problems experienced, peoples knowledge and other things my next choice will be a bit smarter
-
Yes. Exactly the same spec, still love it to bits after 12 months and 14k.
It does everything I want it to and with style.
Just got back from a mega trip to Berlin(2k) , complete with roof box, 3 passengers and full of luggage. Everyone was quite happy with the car and it was very happy too, I think it liked the 102 octane petrol on offer out there.
The comments I got from the the Germans were quite unreal, they would sometimes just point, stare and discuss but a few times actually made a point to talk to me about it. In Germany diesel is cheaper than petrol so there are few GTIs around. Not forgetting the 2 guys with people carriers on the eurotunnel who simply had to come over and ask many questions and just letch. Matching gloss black box with VW bars.
No issues to date part from the wipers which have been replaced with Bosch aeros, perfect.
Major test next week. A long trip with the mother in law and family....

Came from back to back A3 Quattro 3 Door but the inconvenience of 3 door finally beat me and just do not like the A3 in Sport Back guise.
The VW Golf MK7 looked great in 5 door at time and that swayed me and 10 months on still gives me satisfaction when glance towards it.
The DCC and DSG in combination with really nice cabin has made this a great car to drive and honestly love it with the performance/mileage balance.
Considering we all had nothing to compare to as early MK7 owners there has been no hindsight to feeling like should have made another choice.
However am already thinking at next car.
Plan to keep the GTD so that covers the family car with good fuel economy so that gives me licence to just have my car that has less need to be sensible and that leaves me between the S3 and the Golf R and its 55-45 in favour of the Lapiz Blue R with the DSG and DCC now so used to and the reason being is that the A3 comes up as bare specification in manual against many of the standard R features.
Think the S3 looks better in 3 door and everyone recognises the S3 badge as meaning a little more with them 4 exhausts.
The R means little to the uninitiated and only the 4 exhausts make it stand apart from GTD and GTI and there is good argument both look better overall.
However that's not overly important to me as its the initiated that you tend to think to more and the most important feeling is your own. I would be very happy with 300 BHP and 4WD (one thing do miss in the wet)
To be honest S3 in any form or Golf R is hardly lose no matter which way go so not something going to worry about and just going to keep enjoying the GTD which is a great drive and still gets many looks. :)

Love the Touareg so much so that my mrs now uses the golf 90% of the time, the 3.0 ltr v6 is as fast as a gtd and i am averging 35 miles to the gallon, insurance is no more than the golf is, the only down side is the road tax price £450 for the first year and over £200 there after.I would fully recommend the Touareg and you can get some pretty good deals at the moment
-
18,000 miles and it still puts a smile on my face everytime I get in and drive. Maybe I'm just easily pleased but I could see myself going for a GTD again without a second thought. Sure something could he improved eg actual mileage vs published but I seem to average over 50mpg easily in these summer months which isn't too bad.
-
I really don't know part of me says yes as the GTD has disappointed me on mpg very much like Johanr as I wasn't expecting the quoted figures but I was expecti better figures then my mates mk6. On the other hand it's my first 'new' car and I have enjoyed it the other part would really consider switching after 2.5 years to a gti pp and let my heart rule my head. We shall see. A part of me wants an r but the front is very understated we shall see for now I'm going to enjoy the gTd
-
Really enjoying the car and finding it a fantastic drive. Loved the Scirocco, but prefer this. Would be interested in a R in a couple of years time. Not that impressed with the dealer, who seemed quite keen to sell me trackers and such like but strangely ignored my email regarding a buzzing noise from the dashboard. Something that will be sorted out on its first service I feel. In fact had no contact from the dealer since the first week.
-
I thought I would bring this one back to life, I know there are a lot of guys who have swapped out to R's and a lot of new guys on the forum so interested to hear your thoughts.
I was never a big fan of my GTI, but I absolutely love my R. I would happily buy it again
-

I've had my Megane 265 CUP for nearly 3 years and 120,000 miles and is still as fresh as the day I got her....a SUBLIME car to drive and very little matches it, yes build and refinement might not be up to VW standards but I'll never have a bad word said against them, I'll be really really sad to see her go for the new Golf GTI PP
-
I can't believe I missed this thread last year.
Must've either been when I was with Mickey Mouse or mid-house move soap opera. And what a soap opera that was.
Anyway, to rewind to when the thread went live - yes I'd have bought my PP GTI again. Loved it. Great car.
Possibly changed the spec a bit but not much.
I'd have been just as happy with a GTD though, in more or less the same spec.
(White, Nav, park assist, RVC) obviously no PP on a GTD so sport and sound pack would've been ticked.
If anything I'd have binned the Nav maybe?
Fast Forward 12 months - my R - love that too. Amazingly capable car all packaged up in a Golf bodyshell.
Mine wasn't a factory order, or indeed a planned purchase so it was a case of take it as it comes.
If ordering from the factory I'd have maybe added RVC and possibly 19's but unsure on the latter.
My MK6 rode fine on 19's but the MK7 less so.
All in all I'm pretty happy with my choices.
-
yup..it has been faultless
I fully intend to get another when my 3 years is up for this one
change of colour and some rear doors
The R does keep calling to me...but in reality the Gti PP is all the performance I require and its dirt cheap for me to insure..so in practical terms its a no brainer for me....wifes work just signed a deal with LEX so will see what they can do as its a fully managed lease, maintenance and insurance all in..discounted as they are all part of Lloyds now...but I suspect its for more mundane cars
-
Yes, unless something amazing comes out or my work dick me around with the lease scheme, I'll have another for sure.
I'll be changing my spec slightly, now that I actually understand what the various bits do (learnt from both using what I have and reading this forum!).
That actually narks me a bit - the lack of genuine information about the (expensive) options prior to order :-/
Probably will change from LSG to something else though, just so it feels like a new car next time. Maybe silver next time or perhaps something else - but I don't like dark colours.
With 18 months left on my lease and the stupid VW lead times, I'd better place my order now!
-
Yes. Great car made even better with pedal box and DTUK tuning box
-
Yes I would buy my 5-door GTI PP again.
For me it offers a perfect balance between performance, practicality and price. Also really like the heritage and character of the GTI.
There's also only one other GTI in my local neighbourhood, but at least a dozen Rs making the GTI just a touch more exclusive. Which I like.
-
My GTI has been a fantastic all rounder.... Would I buy it again? No..... I fell out with it as soon as I test drove the R.
It's now for sale and I collect my new S3 in a few weeks. VW were pathetic when it came to doing a deal on an R and wanted huge deposit and stupid monthlys. Was about to order a lease R then I managed to get a fully loaded 18 month old S3 for same as I'm paying on the GTI with £1500 in cash. Can't wait.
The Mrs has got a new GTD so will still get to drive around in a Golf
-
I love mine but wish I'd waited a couple of weeks before ordering so that I could have got a BW22 car. The money I spent on Discover Navigation could have instead gone towards Lane Assist and Car-Net App Connect. Would also swap Park Assist for the full Parking Pack.
Still at least its 5dr DSG Nav which were my essentials, having had 3 in a row that spec!
Having said all that, I might go for a Scirocco next if the new model is out, or a TT if they re-introduce the TDI S-Tronic.
-
Park assist isn't an option it's standard isn't it?
-
No its an option. You can also get it as a Park Pack which is park assist and rear view camera.
-
No because then I would have paid for it twice. It was expensive the first time, but if I had to buy it again it would be prohibitive.
However, I would buy another one.
-
Yes I would buy the GTD again despite my current Nav issue :rolleyes:as it gives me everything I need the only extra option would be the upgraded audio.
-

The same in my area. Not seen a GTI for ages. Rs are in double figures. A local manufacturer that I visited last week had 5 from a workforce of just 18 staff. Affordable leasing for a very desirable car. Can't say I wasn't tempted but don't need all that performance, all of the time. GTI PP does the job.
-
Mk7 GTI PP, i think i would buy it again, think, its a great car, but the plethora of rattles I have would make me think twice. My wife has a new 1.6 TDI and her's is exactly the same, maybe even worse.
-
Had my GTD for 2 years now and its time for a change. I have loved the GTD, totally faultless in every department but now they're common as muck around here, as are GTI's and even more so it seems R's. Everybody from Grannies to drug dealers have them so I need to move on. Expecting my replacement in about 3 weeks and very happy the GTD has held its value well so changing is relatively easy.

Complete change this time, gone for Land Rover Discovery Sport

That is a complete change! Very nice car though!!
-
90% of me says yes as far better car than either of my previous Audi A3 but 10% says maybe should have gone for the GTI - So 100% on the MK7
The R was not even an option when chose last time and if was would have still likely gone for GTD but having driven GTD for near 2 years the R is my very likely progression given looked at whats out there and not much compels me away from the MK7
