Title: From Daily Driver to Sunday toy.
Post by: Waspy on 06 May 2014, 18:04
The old gal isn't really fit for my daily usage anymore and will soon be replaced by a mk3 Scirocco.

Since the actual car is worth more to me than any potential buyer I will be loathed and gutted to have to get rid of it. However, I don't have a garage, so can't can't just SORN it and dry store it, working on it when I have time (which is what I would love to do). Which means the other option is to keep it on the street on an ultra-low milage insurance policy, but not if it is going to cost the earth.

So what do you guys think my options are?

Are classic, low mile, policies cheap enough? What about multicar? Are there any true "pay as you drive" polices out there, I'm thinking almost pay per mile (since it will be stationary most of the time)?

I appreciate I am probably putting of an inevitable sale, but I want to explore all the options before taking that jump.

Thanks guys

Hi mate my mk2 is my Sunday car and my insurance company have been really good and done it on a classic 3k miles a year policy at £250 fully comp, think it's only because I'm a good customer with my daily and my t5 insured with them also, try your existing insurance company they might do you a good deal, won't hurt asking the question!!

Not bad, but you aren't a "young, irresponsible driver who will crash into everything every time he drives".

Who is that with? Might see how much a 1k policy is.

Tax is another thing. Bloody annoying that we pay double modern cars which kill just as many polar bear, just because it's old.

Still feels worth it when you look at it after a fresh wash  and wax though *drool*

I'll see your 3k a year on a classic policy for your 1.8 GL - £140 FC and raise you 3k a year on a classic policy with agreed value for my 16V GTI - £95 FC.

£295 FC on a modified 16v with all mods declared on a 5k policy.

None of this will matter soon....

If I get quotes anywhere near what you guys are paying I will jump on it! However I doubt it, what with having no garage and being in Leeds...

EDIT: Just ran a quick quote through a comparison site which is supposed to include classic polices ( I know, I know, I'm lazy and should go direct, but it's 12am). Put my milage down as 1000, secondary car, social only, and fully comp. The best quote was MORE than my current - only car, 10k business miles, fully comp policy. Insurance is the most ridiculous and backward thing about motoring.

Council garages in some sh!t areas are like 7.50 a week. You could leave it in there chained up sorn with no insurance. Or get a policy in your parents name on a classic car just so you can keep to he car without driving it till your in a position to use it again.

That is brilliant! Why didn't I think of that?!

£130 fully comp parked on street at my rents house with my dad as the sole driver. (Goes up to 1200 if I add me as named driver, damn lol, I wi have a play and see if there is a way of getting me on). But yay, so long as my dad agrees (why would he) I can probs keep it...

Parting with a Mk2 can come with the side effect of buying a Mk3.
Dont take the risk

That is not a risk.

Mk3s have one purpose, and one purpose only. To be broken for parts to keep mk2s alive!

Really don't know how you guys do this. Who are these insurers that give out these deals because I've never had quotes like that.

Prove it or its just BS internet numbers

£84 for mine and my dad is a named driver, though he only ever drives it once or twice a year. I'm 42 years young which helps a lot! Costs me more to tax it for 6 months.

It needs to be in my garage by 10pm, if its parked any were else its not covered. But it can be driven after that time. 3k miles year max. Cannot be used to commute to/from work. Etc etc.

Try insuring it in your name with your dad on as a named driver.

I do that anyway for my regular insurance and pay c.£1000, so you can imagine my laughter when the guy at Adrian Flux told me it would be £1500 to park it on a much safer road, covering just 1500 miles a year. Nonsense.

Unfortunately my parents house doesn't have a whole lot of space for another car. So now I have turned my search to renting a house with a garage/drive (don't worry, I was moving out in summer anyway, a garage or drive is now just at the top of my requirements list. The new Scirocco can sit in the street if needs be) lol

It's through Adrian Flux. I am 44 and live in the sticks, but even so, that's what I pay.

Limited mileage always helps even on a non classic, I have 4k a year on mine and it saved another £50 fully comp.

Tend to only do 3500 a year so little point in paying for more.
