Referring to the stone chips a lot of us seem to be having, I thought I would see if there is anything to help us out. I have found the following link for a Stone Chip Repair System.
http://www.chipex.co.uk/
They even do Oryx White and Metallics specifically for the Golf. It maybe worth a try, seeing as the paint is so easily chipping at present. Has anyone tried something like this before, if so does it work?
I am going to order some soon, I hae a really annoying chip on my roof which is really visible in certain light.

I’m sure there was a special offer for these chipex kits on the sellers part of either on this forum or the VWaudi forum a short while ago. You got the big set £38) for the same price as the little set (£30).
I have done a couple of perfect repairs on lacquer deep chips, using model brushes to apply the paint, then 70% IMS and lint free cloths to polish the excess down with the standard touch up pens, but doing a deep chip (lacquer and pigment layer) this way is a bugger to do. Maybe this kit will give better results. The opacity of the TR paint in the touch up pen doesn’t seem as good in the thicknesses required not to give a convex finish to the chip repair, and polishing up is always awkward for me (maybe because I don’t have an orbital polisher) and rely on using MER by hand.

So would it be worth a try with the Chipex system then. I really want to repair the chip on my roof so it is as good as new.

Maybe one of the forum gaffers can ask them to provide a forum discount code for us all to use?

I found this guide absolutely brilliant: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xi3xmeO6C4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xi3xmeO6C4)
I carried out a few repairs on my current Audi and as advised, just used colour paint (no lacquer). I got mine from here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/everygoodnamewastaken?_trksid=p2047675.l2559 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/everygoodnamewastaken?_trksid=p2047675.l2559)

I think I might have more success with a spray paint for the pigment layer. Spray into the can lid and apply with a model/craft brush, the paint is thinner and probably easier to work with in thin layers. Might well try this next time, with some 4000 grit paper stuck to a small flat surface like the small wooden coffee stirrers you get in mcdonalds, to sand the convex lacquer layer down flat a week after application, to allow it to harden before working it.

Has anyone popped to a Detailer or Bodyshop to have the paint depth checked ?
I imagine VW would have a set threshold of what the paint thickness should be, perhaps some cars have come out a bit on the thin size.

Probably part of the weight savings: MK6, 15kg of paint per car, MK7, 7 kg of paint per car. The bonnet and wing chips I have had down to the putty coloured primer show that the paint is woefully thin compared to metallic paint cars I’ve had in the past, as recently as my Scirocco (Rising Blue). I will be going metallic next time I’m sure, they need the thicker paint to get the colour depth.

Regarding the Tornado Red, I have a GTI in the system. I plan to put at least 2 coats of a good wax on it. Do people suffering chips, or not, think this will help? Or not make any difference?

If you haven't got the car yet it might be worth giving cquartz a try when you do.
Supposed to give a hard extra layer which may protect the paint a bit more.
Have a google.

I've had my car CQuartz'd when it was new and I'm afraid it's not much use when it comes to stone chip protection! The same goes for any sealants or waxes, you are kidding yourself if you think otherwise. Think about it, the stone flicks up against your car at 60+ mph... it's bound to chip the paint no matter what you do.
I've used Chipex with reasonable success. It does require patience (and I probably don't have enough of this) and I'm not convinced it works as brilliantly as they claim but it's certainly more effective than blobbing on a bit of paint with the VW touch up.

Nothing will stop stone chips.

karlak - see this thread on detailingworld for paint thickness: http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=333149 (http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=333149)
For info: this guys Tornado Red GTI, he measures between 146 and 158 microns

Wax and sealants are not going to protect against stone chips, you are in your car doing 70mph, hurtling towards a stone going maybe 50mph in your direction, net speed of 120mph, and a layer of sealant maybe 25 microns (1/40 of a mm) thick. There's only one outcome if that stone has a sharp or pointed edge that hits your car. It's like making a bullet proof vest with single sheet thickness cooking foil.

You need one of these

but would you been seen dead driving your car with it fitted?

Theyre hideous.
They can also cause major damage if anything (like a stone) gets caught underneath them. Prolonged use can also cause differences in the paint colour!
