Hi
Can anyone list the pros and cons of a tuning box?
The best tuning boxes recommended for 220bhp mk7 gti
Ease of removing for warranty issues?
Is it detectable in anyway?
Insurance notification issues?
Discounts or prices links?
thank you
-
Depends on what you define as a "Tuning Box"..
-
I believe you want to speak to Andrew at DTUK, who is on here.
You would definitely have to tell your insurance and be prepared to lose the warranty if something goes wrong.
Another thing to consider is the amount of power you would be putting through the front wheels of a car that is pretty near perfect balance as it is, especially as the fact you quote 220bhp suggests you don't have the PP and therefore no mechanical diff and smaller brakes.
-
I've got the DTUK box and I'm made up with the results. It handles the extra power with zero issues despite being front wheel drive, mine is a none pp. Mpg is unchanged. As for warranty issues, easily removed so if I do have any issues I will just take it out. Very happy with it

You'll find loads more info and opinions if you use the search function!

My comment wasn't an 'anti' comment by the way, just giving you something to think about. I'm ordering one for my R.
I have been warned that VCDS may be able to pick up that one has been used and flag the car, although not sure how much of that was scare mongering. I'm yet to find feedback from anyone that has had one of these boxes and a VCDS check done.
Saying that I'm not too concerned as have heard nothing but positive feedback from users of DTUK.

I trial ran DTUK box on a friends mk7 GTI 'company development car' which they had for a few weeks around Xmas and New Year time. They've since taken delivery of a 14 plate GTI non PP in identical spec too as they were so impressed with that car.
Anyway, I fitted the box to that car for a while and when I removed it again before the car left their tenure I ran a VCDS scan on it and nothing showed out of the ordinary, no fault codes whatsoever but maybe if you ran VCDS logs of it during driving you could see slightly different values to a standard car possibly? I can't answer that as I didn't get chance to try it.
So basically fault code wise the box is invisible to VCDS at present.
However dealer diagnostics might well be able to pick up its presence as boost levels will differ to standard. But they'd have to be looking for it, and I don't see why they'd look for it unless they had a beef with you.
I can't see how the DTUK box could possibly cause extra wear on the car unless you drove like an idiot all of the time and to be honest the standard car would suffer likewise if you did.
The DTUK box doesn't spin the turbo crazy fast at 2000rpm like a lot of remaps so the torque and power graphs look pretty much like standard but you just get a bit more, thus you won't be lunching dump valves and clutches as the power increase is very subtle and just feels factory smooth.
Fuel economy, as above, it was pretty much the same as before but this was a very low mileage car and wasn't thrashed.
Insurance wise you'd be silly not to inform your insurer as you have a big plastic box with a light on it and a wiring loom to give the game away! Andrew at DTUK can advise on insurance anyway.
There's a forum discount available from DTUK.

You won't see anything via VCDS as the whole idea of a tuning box is to fool the ecu into thinking it is getting standard readings for various parameters. From what I've heard the only time any fault codes should come up is from connecting the tuning box which may give out of range readings from the short time the sensors are unplugged.
Definitely inform your insurance company about any mods on the car though!
-
Thanks, great information
-
Thanks for the update about VCDS. Will definitely be getting one as soon as my car has done 1000 miles.
-
Just for a rough idea for you. Notifying my insurance put the premium up about £42..... Making the new total £245 for the year!
My god these GTI's are so cheap to insure!!
-
Does the ACC come as standard on the GTi? I'm paying. £300 fully comp with £100 excess on the R. Very impressed (30, clean license, parked on driveway).
-
Darlo, which insurance company do you use? Are there better ones to use when declaring modifications?

Its an insurance broker I get through work which provided approved insurance policies for people in my line of work. I can't remember the exact name, something like equity star or something.
It was only slightly cheaper than Admiral/elephant which I find very mod friendly and have used a fair few times in the past.
-
+1 on Admiral, i was with RSA and they gave me the V's when i stuck an exhaust on so i moved to admiral and they only charged an extra £20 p/m for my mods

Elephant customers: Have a non-fault accident in which the other side admit 100% liability and pay for everything, and then tell me what your renewal is with Elephant. Absolutely sh!te company to deal with when something happens to your car.
-
That's not encouraging to hear monkeyhanger as Elephant are the cheapest price I can find by a decent margin!

Absolute sheisters they are. A bus hit my MK5 golf GT170TDI at 2 weeks old while parked legally on the side of a road. Absolute cut and dry case of their fault and so they paid up. The case cost Elephant nowt. Due to that non-fault accident, my renewal went from £450 to £850 because I was a much bigger risk according to them.
-
it is an absolute joke that insurance companies are allowed to do that, thats like them opening admitting they believe in karma and voodoo as if some of us must be more unlucky than others and therefore a greater risk. It can happen to anybody but you should only cough up if you were at fault in my mind

That is bad, I assume the same applies to admiral as well as they are the same company?
I have insured a few with both and the price has always been very good, although I have never had to claim with them. A friend of mine did have a really bad smash and he was really impressed with them and it was all sorted quickly and smoothly. However he never mentioned what his renewal price was? Suppose the best bet is protected no claims with them and if the worse happens go to another company at renewal time.
-
There was no loss of no claims, I went elsewhere at renewal, cheapest was about £20 more than Elephant with no smash pricing. I wouldn't have expected to have almost doubled price on premium if it had been my fault. Always protect my no claims.
An Admiral customer clattered my scirocco 3 years ago and they were very quick to make arrangements to offer me a decent courtesy car and arrange repair of my car to avoid my side shafting them with punitive rental rates for a replacement runaround like Elephant did to the bus company with the Golf via a claims management arm called Albany Assistance.
-
Pointless protecting no claims bonus as your premium goes up anyway after any accident fault or not. Most places charge extra to protect but then hike your premium anyway. Haven't protected mine for years and most only accept 5 as maximum anyway.
-
I'd rather protect and be paying the price for having 6 years NCD with a recorded accident than 4 years NCD with a recorded accident because I hadn't protected it and they took 2 years off me. It does make a difference, although I don't think a non-fault accident should ever count against you if it was 100% the other party's fault.
If you're never going to have an at fault accident then it's money gone, but you're paying for piece of mind when you protect your no claims, even if you will still be penalised, albeit at a lower level of penalty.
-
I have had two non fault accidents, both were me being hit by a lorry.
First I was in an A3 waiting at a roundabout and a lorry driver not paying attention went into me leaving an £8000 repair bill, second in a Passat estate, was a drink driver changed lanes onto me, forced me into the central reservation and wrote off the car.
Neither affected either my no claims or my policy in any way in the long term, although the first one required a renewal before the claim had been finalised so I had to pay an updated premium, although once it had been finalised I was refunded. They were both with Adrian Flux.

Looking forward to receiving the car in the next couple of weeks, driving 1000 miles and ordering the DTUK tuning box. I'm sure i'll be impressed with the standard setup but overwhelmed with the box attached!
-
A great bit of kit. Easy to install as I have no mechanical experience. Fantastic support from DTUK, before, during and after purchase. Once fitted WOW! The standard GTI set is very good as everyone knows and always brought a smile to my face, but with the tuning box fitted ........ INCREDIBLE! I still have the subtle gti looks but with near R performance. Thank you Andrew and guys from DTUK. All I can say is buy one!

What setting are you guys using on your tuning box currently?
Mine is out on loan as my mate has a temporary lease GTI as a company car (and I've not used the box or my GTI for a good while and I'm going to be out of the country), I installed the loom for him but wondered what setting was currently deemed as best?

Hi littlelordfonts - nice to meet you today briefly...
-
Hi
And you
Don't think the lady behind was too chuffed!
-
No, she obviously didn't appreciate that two mk7 gti owners need to talk about stuff... Your wife might have rolled her eyes a little too? Mine certainly did when I told her I just met someone from the forum!
-
Ha ha Ditto!
Would highly recommend DTUK tuning box. Give them a call
-
I will have to now I know you are lurking around the neighbourhood with more horses than me under the bonnet!
