someone mentioned it also effects the a3? does anybody know what engine is effected here as my friend is purchasing an a3 soon and i'd hate for him to have the same headache.

Skoda/Seat and Audi share the 2.0T chain driven engine with the MK6 GTI/VW but Audi continued with the TFSI marketing as opposed to TSI.
What is interesting is that you can find plenty of VW and Skoda failures but I haven't come across anything on an Audi or Seat forum. Wikipedia states the 8P A3 has a different engine code so it might be worth checking the engine code to see if that info is correct.
Perhaps the failures are more likely on a certain batch of engines such as CCZB.

If you read the chain tensioner thread you will find that the audi had the first revised tensioner from the start that was not fitted to vw, skoda, seat until mid 2010.
There are failures of audi and seats out there. You will be amazed until its brought to mass attension how people stay quiet about it espeically fans of the brands in the UK. Afterall who wants the secondhamd values of there pride and joy to tumble. :wink: I mensioned it once or twice here and was shot down at first...
It effects the chain driven engines of the EA888 family in 1.8 and 2.0 capacity.
Read the thread. It states the dates the tensioner was revised.
Theres also timing chain slip related issues with the 1.4 TSI engines but this mainly effects the higher output versions like the twincharger version.

I work for Audi and we get about 3-4 failures a month,most of them are ok after chain/tensioner replacement but some require engine replacement :)

Can you visually see the differance in the tensioners if you went to buy a gti ??,
if I bought one from a dealer I would demand one put on as a course of buying the car.

no you can not see it, its sealed up next to the chain. Easiest way is to check build date and cross reference when the revision was introduced to your car.
