Title: Removing Component Protection - Discover Navigation Pro
Post by: PorkerBus on 19 March 2014, 20:49
Hi all,

Apologies if this has already been discussed. I have a 2013 GTD with Composition Media system (no nav) and I've managed to purchase and fit the Discover Navigation Pro. I was advised I would need to get a dealer to remove 'component protection' before the units would work but after trying a couple of dealers they're not interested in helping, so right now I have a very expensive screen and head unit (in the glovebox) that only allow bluetooth connectivity and nothing else.

Can anyone help with getting them working? Based in north London if anyone knows somehwere I can go.

Thanks

Very interesting. This is the first retro fit I've heard of in the mk7 and this also proves the rumours that VW have tied the units to specific chassis numbers to reduce the theft / black market. The eBay market for RNS units in the mk5/6 was and still is huge!

Was there much work involved in fitting the unit??

Sorry, this is no help to your problem...

Hi Joe

I'm no expert but the swap over was fairly simple, the original unit was Panasonic, the Discover is Alpine. A few connectors needed trimming but it was a 30 minute job.

The advice before buying was remove 'component protection' as mentioned before. Ive seen on a number of forums people talking about using VCDS for progamming various bits from lights to their MFD so I dont know if this would extend to resolving this issue.

Have you looked on line at "component protection" there are loads of articles on Audi. Which I would imagine would be the same as VW

I only had a quick look as I was interested in how it worked but one forum suggests there is a place in London that will remove it but no name given! You'll have to do some digging
http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/general-automotive-chat/197471-component-protection-independent-specialists.html

Other places like below are saying the dealer will do it free of charge only if its not on the stolen list!!

EDIT: you need to find an indy that has "Autologic Diagnostic System"

Yeah, there's a huge thread on here for VCDS tweaks and I've done several of them on mine. I wonder is vcds tweak all you need to get around this issue? Maybe it's just a case of knowing what vcds settings to tweak.... In the mk5/6 it was just a case of having the security code for the unit. As predicted, it's not so simple in the mk7.

Don't know how this works as its not loading fully but this eBay advert can remove it for Audi so maybe contact him?

Vcds won't remove security protection for the radio. You'll need something like vag commander or what has been mentioned in previous posts. Dealers do seem totally unwilling to help in instances like these but to be fair they aren't computer techs and only really plug a cable into your car. The rest cones from Germany.

Just out of interest - how expensive was the pro nav unit?  Did you have to add the shark fin Ariel to the roof as well?

Thanks everyone for your suggestions so far, i had a vag specialist take a look today and although he managed to connect to the servers in Germany it would not allow him to remove the component protection. It would appear i need a dealer or similar to send a DISS request/ report direct to the factory so they can approve the equipment for my GTD.

After trying 3 dealers I'm no further forwards, if anyone has any suggestions on how to oversome this please let me know.

As for the kit, I was advised the aerial's are all the same (they're in the rear window) so a different version wasn't needed. Unfortunately as no one (dealer or other) has tried to do this before this is complete speculation until when, and if I can get the component protection removed.

Hi Porkerbus,

I have the standard CMS system at the moment with no nav and the aerial etc is located in the rear window.  As far as I'm aware though, people with Nav and Pro Nav have a shark fin on the roof as well?  Will be interesting to see if it works without this.

The navigation aerial is roof mounted in the stubby fin. It will still work but the reception will be nowhere near as good with likely regular dropouts of reception.

You will need a separate GPS aerial but you won't need the sharkfin.
When retro fitting the RNS 510 nav into mk5/6 Golfs, most people would have tucked the gps aerial in behind the unit, say behind the centre vents, out of view. I did this and it worked perfectly.

I guess if anyone was attempting this upgrade and already had the discover nav, then the existing gps aerial/sharkfin would connect up.

This is clearly the least of your difficulties though!

Hello from Germany,

well, I retrofitted a Discover Pro with bad end.

My 2013 Golf Mk7 was delivered with a Composition Media and so I
changed the HU and Display. At the first time it worked very well.
But with the "Component Protection" the Radio was muted.
Ok - so i drove to the dealer and he unlocked the Discover Pro.
But at this moment the Nav doesn´t work any more.

After 20 sec. of working, it says "Navdata not valid"...
look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsL6l-M_Pvw

I think the navcards are bound to the car´s VIN , like the A1 MMI 3GP.
(As my car wasn´t delivered with Nav, there is no possiblity to bind it to my car´s VIN)
You can´t retrofit it.

I've spent a lot of money for it.... uuuaaahh

regards
Futzel

I hope that's true,  very good news indeed if it is,  let's hope there's no way around it either (other than the official route).

Hi

We have people come in to work who need Component protection removing and they just having to pay for the time needed to carry it out on the VAS Machine,With it not being a approved VW retro fit i very much Doubt it would work.

Thanks

To change the head unit and Display is under 10 minutes of work.
The wiring is 1:1 the same.

To remove the component protection was no problem for my friendly VW Dealer.
As the head unit was not a stolen unit, my dealer unlocked the component protection via online Connection to Wolfsburg.

But there is no way to activate the maps for my car... after 20 sec. they are locked.
And this is my main problem.

You also get the shark fin ariel if you specify the Advanced Phone Kit

CP can only be done at a VW dealer. VCDS or VAG Command will not be able to remove it as it requires an online link for VW to ensure that the unit is not a stolen one.

I have a question, does anyone know how to enable driving data on the radios? We tried to fit a new unit and it does not display driving data. We tried a few things but was unsuccessful.

There was someone on here who got a misbuild from VW, they supplied the car with the wrong Sat Nav unit.
You would think it would be a simple case of changing the head unit to the proper one and have VW doing their bit to removing component protection however the OP stated it couldn't be done and a new car has been ordered instead.

Now if the dealer / VW can't do it between them I don't hold out much hope for others.

as you know, my dealer was able to remove the component protection.
but after removing the CP, the nav map locked.

So here is my own Workaround to use the Navigation
