Title: Golf R at Chester
Post by: Ginge 35Edition on 25 February 2014, 17:29
First impressions

Wheels look a bit small and would've been better in bright silver IMO. Other than that I'm sold, SQ5 can go whistle now!

Looks fantastic, not so sure on the alloy design, although those are the 19's I believe. Looks very formal that dealership, "Consultation Bay", "Handover".

Love the colour and the quad exhausts. The front still looks too boring for my liking. The alloys don't look particularly good either.

If the GTI had that colour option, the quad exhausts and the double DRL's it would be a far better looking car than the R imo.

Looks great in Lapis Blue and I like the Pretoria's, but for me it'd have to be in black, no matter how much of a pita it is to clean (used to that!)

Alloys seem to be an acquired taste, but I much prefer the 'Cadiz' 18's which are standard.

Saw a customers car that had been delivered at Peterborough VW at the weekend, looked really nice in the blue in the flesh but the standard alloys are hideous imo.

I'll have to see one in the flesh. Honest opinion of the above pictures is uhmmmm. I'm sure it will look the mutts nuts in the metal..

I agree, the Santiago's look way better from a design / look perspective compared to R alloys.
Title: Re: Golf R at Chester
Post by: TheCarMadDad on 25 February 2014, 21:58
Do you think VW were perhaps going for an understated look on the front end with the R? I think when the ignition is on and the DRL's are lit up it will make the front look more aggressive.

I am right in thinking the rear light clusters are darker than on the GTI/GTD?
Title: Re: Golf R at Chester
Post by: monkeyhanger on 25 February 2014, 21:59
It looks lower than an GTI/GTD - is that the case, or are those photos a bit misleading?
Title: Re: Golf R at Chester
Post by: JoeGTI on 25 February 2014, 22:05
Yes it's 10mm lower and yes the rear clusters are darker.

I love the blue but I'm not mad on the wheels or the front end. The 19" version of the "Cadiz" wheel which is an option here in Ireland is nicer IMO.

Lovely car, but not keen on the alloys. The standard wheels would be my choice, much chunkier

Wheels look a little bland - maybe they'll look better in the flesh though.  The standard ones are more pleasing to the eye, but then they're too small IMO.  But - the rest of the car is the nuts, I reeeeealy want one

Thinking, just thinking!  To be honest, the GTI is so much fun and such a great car I wouldn't change just yet.  But after 2 years I'll want to change - and that R in blue looks amazing, seriously tempted if the deal was right!!

Looks ok but not keen on the carbon effect leather. Also think the front grille isn't as sporty as the gti/gtd's. Like the colour and the quad pipes though.

Title: Re: Golf R at Chester

Is it just me or is that front grill too understated. It's almost as if VW are embarrassed they have created such a car and didn't want to brag and the seat options are poor.

Quad pipes to me is a little over the top and looks a bit tacky.

Rear wheels could do with a spacer and the whole car looks like it could do with a 40mm drop

I think a posher cloth interior is standard

I have just received an email for a VIP event at Johnsons volkswagen birmingham. I might attend to see what they have on offer.

The cloth is also a bit weird. This leather is a £2500 extra

I actually quite like the look of this leather, but couldn't justify spending £2500 extra, on a car that probably should come with leather as standard

Totally agree.... I know many will try to justify by saying its a bit of a Q car. However, I never buy into this philosophy. Its a top of the range hot hatch and the front bumper should be styled to reflect this accordingly. The Mk6 front bumper looking back at photos is much better in this respect.

I still wouldn't mind one though!

Even that is muddled with the frankly bonkers quad exhausts at one end and the "it could be an SE' look at the front...

Agree, the front should look more aggressive but overall I like it.  Cloth is standard but there are two optional leather options:

1. Carbon nappa option which comes in a choice of 2 different colour combinations.  Carbon/Anthracite/grey or Carbon/grey-beige - a whopping £2615

2.  Vienna black leather - £1700

Think the cloth is two-tone with the bolsters being lighter.  Of those choices, I'd go for the all black leather but it should be standard.

Its just the photo, I am sure however that I've seen black gloss mirror housings on white Golf R's.
Still this the styling could have been improved so that it looked better than the GTI/GTD.

I think they're a silver colour. I have just seen the first one on the road in Sydney which is incredible as we don't even have GTI's with Performance Pack yet (they arrive in May). This R has silver/greyish mirrors.

Specs on this car are Adaptive Chassis (I assume as it's standard on our GTIs), Driver Assist (the bundle that includes the cruise control radar and driver assist), 19s wearing crappy Bridgestones, DSG, black leather (not two-tone) and Discover Nav

For me I think I'd still take a GTI pp in carbon grey with the 19" santiagos over that particular R. This is putting performance aside for looks of course.

Just popped in to my local dealership to collect my car and when I was in they had two lapis blue R's sitting outside. Asked if I could test drive one which they where only too happy to oblige. The car I test drove was an automatic 5 door on standard 18"s.

Now I have never driven an automatic before so was a bit apprehensive so I sat in the passenger seat for the first few minutes while the salesman drove.

The result: Oh my god   this thing is massively quick. So much so that my heart was in my mouth when the salesman was flooring it. The acceleration was just on another planet from my GTI and really does knock your head back in the seat. I'm not sure if it has the same brake set up as the GTI PP but if it does then the salesman demonstrated to me how amazing the brakes are.

And the sound -  well it just sounds epic and you could hear the burble of the exhaust on the downshift. I went through a tunnel and floored it and the sound just boomed

When it was my turn I took it a bit easier than the salesman and it took a bit of getting used to with the automatic box but I just loved it. The changes felt very smooth and linear.

The verdict: Looks wise its still too understated for my liking but based on its unbelievable performance it would definitely make me consider it for my next car and I would without hesitation go with the dsg box.

On a side note - picked up my own car after two weeks at the dealership and drove it 100 yards and the noise I've been experiencing was still there. To say i'm not happy is an understatement. So the car has been left with VW until its resolved. I'm kind of hoping they will just say its not fixable and offer me a discounted R

Graig what was your view on the pictures of the new TT. I was thinking it was a slight let down...

I think like the majority i'm slightly disappointed that the change is not more radical. It's definitely more an evolution than a revolution from the Mk2 but you could argue that the same applies to the 911 which is a fantastic car.

The interior does look lovely and i'm sure the quality in the cabin will be first class.

The problem as always with Audi is the price and in particular the ridiculous prices for options which are standard in most other cars nowadays. I would love a TTS but that's likely to be well outside my price range. However, they are saying that the standard 2.0 TFSI model is possibly going to be quicker than the outgoing TTS which would be impressive and quite tempting. Again though with a suggested starting price of £28k by the time you add a few options you could easily be £35k plus and the one thing I've learned with Audi is they rarely offer any sort of discount

This is where the R probably becomes more and more appealing given its price and performance

Really liking the new TT. The MK2 looks way better than the MK1 to me, I was wondering how they would top the MK2, and was fearful they'd cock it up trying to be too different. It's like a MK2 but with a meaner front end. The Scirocco has a mean looking front end and the MK2 TT isn't mean enough.

If I can get the missus driving shortly (she'll have to when i'm made redundant and have to work elsewhere - she currently gets dropped off on my way to work and picked up on my way home), and in something practical (she wants an A1 S-line - could I persuade her to be in the GTD? Probably not, she thinks it is "big"), I could see myself in the TT. I'm not one for getting stuck into the options list as it really bumps up the monthly price with poor retained value on them. If it comes with Xenon or LED lights, parking sensors, rain sensors and auto dimming rear view mirror, that'd be enough for me.

The multimode TFT instrument screen looks to me like it'll be standard fit across the range as the secondary screen has disappeared from the interior to keep it looking sleek inside.

Discount will be difficult with the TT - looked into how cheaply I could get the missus an A1 S-line, and 8% off RRP through a broker is the best I can find, despite it being out for 3 years.

Not a fan of the alloys, why on earth they decided to drop the Santiago's design for the Golf R baffles me.
The Santiago alloy design was originally down for the standard Golf R alloys.
For me you have to get Lapiz Blue in the are to make it stand out more, at £40k for a highly option Golf R you need it to look special! :)
I'm hoping the MK8 R has VAQ!

Nowhere near now. Black edition S-line 2.0TDI 5 door = £1595 saving on £22536 (inc comfort pack), 7.1%. That deal is dependent on you taking Audi Finance, or remove £500 of that discount) - i'd be a cash buyer.

www.carfile.co.uk slightly beats that.
Do what others do, take the finance then pay it off within 14 days if your cash buyer.
