Looks like the R has started to be delivered....
http://www.rforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=4201
-
Had a look at the pictures, not feeling the standard alloys nor the cloth interior...
-
I think it's going to be a bit like the mk5 r32 I had and when you see it in the flesh it will be much better! Leather should be standard in this kind of car, although I don't mind the cloth it looks ok
-
Don't like the colour of the seat bolsters on the cloth seats and as usual for the Mk7 the wheels don't fill the rear arches properly.
Was seriously considering an R but not so sure now! As above, need to see one in the flesh...
-
Reading through it seems you may be able to spec black or grey, will have to wait and see! I don't think any new car fills the arches as they used to, I remember one of the things I loved about my leon R I brought when they very first come out in 2002 being how it Just hugged the road and sat perfect.
-
Looking forward to seeing some of these cars without the transport wrapping on to get a feel for how they look. The lapiz blue looks amazing but i'm still not entirely convinced by the front end. I was looking through some pictures of the R and came across some renderings that top speed had come up with before the car was released.

Final Version

I know which one I prefer
-
Hmm me too!
-
The rendering pic looks like the MK6 R.

The rendering pic looks like the MK6 R.
Or that it has a Scirocco R skirt.
-
The front bumper on the mk7 isn't aggressive enough IMO. Also the standard alloys on the mk6 version look nicer.
Having said that still wouldn't mind one.
-
Had a look at the pictures, and read a few posts on the thread... The owner is saying its the Carbon Nappa Leather option?! Doesn't look too much like it. I also think that the 19" Pretoria wheel option looks a little better than the standard wheel on the R, just my opinion of course.
Love the Lapis Blue though, a stunning colour and I also love the quad pipes at the back. Superb!
-
I'm not a fan of the standard alloys, but I'm going to whack some aftermarket ones in fairly soon after picking it up anyways! Haha.
I'm a little worried about the interior colour on mine. I've gone for standard cloth with no option given RE colour, but think the grey bolsters look worse than a Austin maestro.

I've been found out! Haha.
Put the forms in on Friday, credit went through today and put the order in. Still umming and arring about one or two extras (DCC mainly). Apparently I've got a few weeks to make that decision.

It would be the first option I would be adding if I was going for an R purely because it has a race mode

PCP in the end. Gone for £3000 and £333 PCM with 10,000 miles.

I'm not sure I'd pay £800 for it though.

If the R didn't have the dual DRL's I think you could easily drive past it and not give it a second look. Some people will like the wolf in sheep's clothing but it's too bland for me. I'm not saying that would prevent me from buying one in the future because I love the thought of 300bhp and 4wd but it's such a pity it's not more aggressive. Perhaps VW will offer more performance/styling parts for the R down the line.
Found these pics

That blue is gorgeous! The blue instrument needles are very cool too. The 4 pipes though is way OTT.
-
I really don't like the bloody mirrors! Mine is going to be limestone grey, think the colour really suits it, will be a real wolf in sheeps clothing :)

Blue plus those exhausts is way too OTT. Sheepskin clothing colours such as the lovely Limestone are the way forward IMO

PCP in the end. Gone for £3000 and £333 PCM with 10,000 miles.
If you don't mind me asking, what interest rate did you get? Over how many years? And is that £3,000 down as a deposit? That's a brilliant deal if so
-
Not feeling it thb. Don't like the interior cloth or leather option (It would be ok with plain nappa as we have in our GTI/D's). Don't like the alloys much either :-( I also prefer the front bumper on the GTI/D. Maybe it would look better in the flesh...who knows.
I do however like the rear diffuser and quad pipes, also the colour! :-)
-
I think the only things i prefer over the GTI are the double U daylight running lights in the headlights (prefer the red stripe though) and the lightly tinted rear lights.
My opinion may well change once i see one in person though.

I'm struggling to work this out as well considering I put £4500 down and pay £338 over 4 years on a GTI

Its all down to how the PCP deal is constructed (once the best discount is negotiated!) - there are lots of variables and can give surprisingly different payment profiles. Please see my analysis of the quotes received by R001 for a GTD and R on page 7 of this thread:
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=264078.60
The APR is the standard current one on a Solutions PCP deal...
-
Mine has changed slightly now as I've upped the miles and added extra's.
I'm on 12,000 miles a year, 10% discount and 6.04%APR.
5 door R with metallic paint, DCC, plain black leather, keyless entry, winter pack and fully maintained (including tyres, brake pads and all other wear and tear items).
£7000 down and £315pcm.
The £3000 down was on 10,000 PCM, standard be servicing, no DCC and no leather.
-
Also, that is over 3 years and is a 5 door car.

Mine is £350pm fully inc maintained inc consumables, 12k miles zero deposit :)

Ap69 - that is a lease though? The other deals were PCP.
-
Mine is PCP with a balloon of £17,000.
Didn't go through VW as the best I could get through them was £4500 down and £326pcm on a GTI PP.

How does that work?
If you are just handing it back I take it its to the finance company rather than VW?
Who did you go with in the end?
-
Went with AFS, they're a site sponsor on the R forum.
Yeah, at the end the car goes back to the finance company, although I may sell it privately towards the end of the term and pay off the GFV amount with that money as chances are I'll get more on a private sale than they will at auction.
They just got back to me, confirmed BW 13 with estimated delivery in late April

What a bargain lease deal this is!!

I think the Golf R is going cheap on leases because Volkswagen arent selling as many as they expected
Looking at that link, the Golf R is way cheaper on lease than a GTI......

Wow that's impressive, I've been getting business lease quotes on a R for one of my managers. Prices are typically all over the place. From £615 down to £425 per month, still a fair but more than my Gti at £348
-
Speaking to a family friend in the car finance industry he has said the R is cheaper because they are expecting them to keep their value.
I managed to get a big discount on my R so I'm paying less on it than I would a GTi. I know there are 48 R's on order on the R forum. One person on there has said there are 20 on order for just one dealer in Aberdeen!!!
-
Just looked at some figures, I think it explains why the R's are cheaper on finance.
A GTI with PP costs £27,120 and VW GFV after 3 years is £12,894.
An R costs £29,900 and VW GFV is £15,201 after 3 years.
So it costs £2780 more brand new, but it holds £2307 over the GTi GFV. So on finance you're only paying about £400 more.
Also, there are 3 year old GTI's for sale from £15,000, whereas the cheapest R is £22,000.
I'm not trying to argue that the R is a better car than the GTi, that is like comparing orange juice to apple juice, both are outstanding cars, both have pro's and cons compared to the other.

Are you comparing like with like? Is that taking into account the discount you would get on the GTI?
-
That is like for like, and no, sorry, I think I explained badly.
With the discount the basic R is cheaper than a GTI is with no discount.
I got a bigger discount on the R than i was being given in the GTI, so my R, at basic cost, was less than £1000 more than the GTi PP discounted. On the PCP the R with metallic paint worked out about £12 PCM more than a GTi PP of the equivalent spec, except in PW or the standard black. That means I'm only paying £400 more. The waiting time was also considerably less. I was originally quoted 15 weeks for an R or 20 for a GTi. The order went off to VW on 07/02 and I have since been told to expect it mid to late April.
The figures just worked for me, so I went for it.
-
Great choice, the only problem I would have with that is sleeping before she's delivered! :)

Not seen any gti's at that price. Which company was that?

Gti on lease at 148 quid. Where do I sign up

Hi sorry I forgot to shown the £200pm we knock off the full lease price by way of an allowance. Business users prices, full maintenance inc consumables, the supplier is Arnold C, who are winning all the quotations at the moment.

The discount you got on the R must have been enormous against the discount you got offered on a GTI PP if there was only a grand difference? Doesn't seem right to me
-
Having looked at the figures I was given around 11% off the car (I was originally told 10%, but the figures say differently), plus a lower APR rate than VW would offer. On the GTI I was only given 8% discount.
Found my original quote for the Golf R 5 door manual with keyless entry and winter pack
£4,500 down, £304.76 PCM and GFV of £16,885.85. Total over 3 years is £32,052.45. That includes the interest, at 5.9%. I have since added extra's to the car, so those figures have changed. That car costs £31,520, so the discount is negated by the interest, which is a pain in the butt, although I'm not in a position to buy outright.
I went through a third party finance company to buy the car, although they put me in touch with their preferred VW dealer who told me that the finance company were somehow undercutting the discounts they could give.
Strangely, the best quote I could get on a GTi with performance pack was £5,000 and £326 pcm. GFV was around £15,000 and interest rate of 6.3%, although that was through VW themselves.
-
On the above order the R has 12,000 miles per year, the GTi had 10,000.
-

A little off topic - I went through this company for the Personal Contract Hire on my GTD. I was originally looking at VW PCP but at the time it simply wasn't competitive to the £185+vat (6+23 5k) that I'm paying for the lease.
Looking at the decent lease deals being offered for the R I could be tempted into one when my current lease ends  Although that depends on the real world fuel consumption R owners report!

-
when did you order jimmy to get bw 13 as curious when R no 2 arrives as was ordered this week
-
I finalised the order 7th Feb and I have now got a confirmed build week of 12. It means that this time in a month my car will have been built :)
Would have ordered sooner but bought over the phone so it took a couple of weeks to sort the paperwork out.

£36k is a ridiculous price unless it's fully loaded. Even then it's still very steep
-
Anything above £30k for a 3dr hatch-back for me is a no no.
I would start to look at second options outside the Volkswagen brand..... £36k can get you so many better acceptable mileage cars.
Each to their own though but if I had £36k I would buy a AMG
-
I'd buy a gti and a ducatti
-
You say that, but the AMG is bit hard by depreciation. You'd be throwing away a lot more money than the R. I looked at loads of different cars before I ordered my R, in fact spent 3 months looking into them.
For the price I'm paying for the R I'd get an A250 A class or an A180 C-class coupe. The BMW is just, we'll look at it, it's a good engine but a horrible looking car, plus rear wheel drive means it would be undriveable for a few months of the year. To get a similar spec in the AMG I'd be looking at another grand on the deposit and another couple of hundred pound a month.
I chose the golf because, as far as I am concerned, it is the best looking car in the market, has AWD, decent boot space and holds it's value better than any other currently out there.
-
^ A Golf R is hit hard by depreciation if it has £6k of extras on it. Those extras are likely to add just £1200 (20% retained) over a vanilla R come trade-in time.
Vanilla R: GFV = £15201 = 50.8% of RRP
£36k R: GFV = £16401 = 45.6% of RRP
Vanilla A45: GFV = £18275 = 47.1% of RRP
I do agree that the Golf is best looking in it's size sector, with the BMW 1 series being a complete hound of a car and the A-Class being a less good looking Scirocco copy.
