Title: Scraping noise from front passenger wheel
Post by: TheMoggy on 18 January 2014, 15:28
Does anyone else have a scraping noise from the front passenger wheel? The noise only appears at slow speeds usually when I am turning the wheel...

...there is a lot of mud on the road near me so I am putting it down to that, but if anyone else on this forum has had similar problems then I might take it into the dealership.

I have noticed this recently, normally i have the radio playing but it was off and heard this same noise from passenger side, did you find out what it was?

Yep, I have a bit of a noise when on full lock at very low speed, i.e.: when doing 3 point turns. The noise stops when the car is stationery. It's not a scraping noise as such, but a low friction noise -  it sounds like the tyres are touching the wheel arches whilst in motion, but surely they aren't? :undecided:

Yes it does sound like the tyre rubbing the inside arch!

I have this too.

It's coming from the front passenger side wheel area. Only occurs at very low speed whilst manoeuvre or using full lock. Mine is more of a creaking sound which I'm convinced is coming from the suspension strut area.

Don't think it's anything serious but it's a bit odd all the same.

Was going to post about it a few weeks ago but didn't really know how to accurately explain what it sounds like.

I've got the same noise but only really hear it in sport mode (DCC). doesn't really happen in comfort or normal.

Tested in today in an empty car park, all modes, the noise is there when turning at slow speeds, could some more members check for this?

I've also found mine does the same. But only when it's very wet. I think it is most likely the CV boot rubbers rubbing against one another.

Mine groans a bit when maneuvering in carparks too, but also only when it's very wet. My MK6 did the same thing and my dealer told me it was normal! He even showed me a VW report stating that it was normal. After a while (maybe after a year of ownership), I realised I hadn't heard the noise in a while. It seemed to go away itself.

That does sound rather like one of symptoms I had before having the strut top mounts and bearings replaced - particularly the craeaking which was also audible during other slow speed manouvers, speed bumps etc.

Hi. Mine does this as well, only on full lock. I have put it down to something like the differential. I have had other cars make the same noise in the past.

Ok I think there are two noises here, ones on full Lock which in my mind is normal and the other I have is at all speeds but only heard at low speeds due to other noises, it sounds like a squeaking or squirrelling/hamster noise coming only from the front right. It's not very noticeable now but if it gets worse I'll be taking her in, is anyone else similar or are we all scraping noises on the passenger side?

I have exactly the same as you Graham. I've been in to the dealers umpteen times to be told "everything is fine". I've given up trying to fix it now to be honest, the replacement is here in a couple of weeks so i'm just hoping the next on will be better.

Is yours getting worse at all? I cant work out if its just started or if its always been there. I have just changed the springs but I doubt they will have caused the issues as I trust Shark to put them in right.

I come from a Leon so i can live with slight noises, and the bcs helps me ignore them even more  but i dont like things that get progressively worse as then I cant convince myself its normal and it gets to me!

It started around 2000 miles at a guess. I've now covered almost 7000 miles and its still exactly the same!

Exactly the same I can live with, if it gets worse I will probably have a breakdown lol

I can't deal with it. I hate stuff like that! If the new car has it i'm going to be pretty annoyed.

Ok I think it's getting worse, could be damp related but I'm not convinced. Did I read somewhere about taking some rubber mount out and regreasing or have I dreamt this?

There was a suggestion that it could be the CV boots sticking to themselves when damp and on-lock.

Silicone grease may help if this is the cause...

If it is such a problem, I'd be on to the dealership to sort out...

Fixed!!! Took it my VW garage...they had it a day and they tracked the problem to the dust covers.

They repaired, cleaned and reseated both front wheels.

I no longer have creaks! :)

That's what I thought...that's what it says on the fix sheet. The mechanic had gone who fixed it so it was left to the desk clerk to explain.

Whatever, it's fixed now!
