Tomorrow morning I'm heading over to the dealer to pick up my brand new GTD (excited much?) and the wifes new, pre-reg 1.6TDI.
Having never bought a new car in my life, what should I expect and what should I do with both cars? How detailed do I need to be on the inspections of each? The pre-reg only has delivery mileage and hasn't been used as a demo, but noticed it's being sold on the paperwork as 'used, qualifying', which the dealer has mentioned means it gets the warranty and everything as normal, just that as it has one owner being a pre-reg (one of the dealers other car dealerships) it is classed as new. How would this affect anything under the SOGA compared to my new, new car?
Obviously, painfully excited about picking up both, but just wondered if anyone has any advice as about things that should be done :)
Thanks in advance.

I could be wrong but I was told by a dealer who was obviously trying to scare me off a competitors car, that pre reg cars make you the second owner which for insurance purposes if anything happens to the car within the first year, instead of it being written off and you getting a like for like car, you are only given the market value for it which is usually less by this time.
When was it registered as that is when the warranty will start.
He painted a right gloomy picture for me but I'm sure its not that bad. I had a pre-registered Vectra once  saved me thousands
There is a checklist on here. Print it out and take it along with you. Take your time studying the bodywork as that will be harder to get rectified if you notice something a few days later. Everything else should be covered by warranty. Also ask to see a copy of the PDI.
When I collected my last brand new Golf, it had a ding on the side of the car but I didn't notice it due to the rain. Luckily the dealer sorted it a week later.

You must be the only person to have ever gone and collected two new cars at the same time!
When I collected my car I had gone through the delivery checklist published on here but found it to be rather OTT. If you'd spec'd your car I'd say make sure it has all your options but since that doesn't apply then just make sure it looks immaculate all over, you have both keys (with GTD on them) and there's a full tank of fuel.
The excitement will probably overcome anything you've attempted to remember from a checklist anyway.
The one thing you absolutely mustn't forget is to get plenty of photos and put the best ones on here
-
Thanks for the advice :)
I may be being somewhat simple, but I can't find the link to the checklist? Where is it?
Sadly, no full tanks of fuel, I already know that one. I negotiated hard, but didn't manage to get that included. 20L a car is all we get.
Still, I am getting a £500 fuel card thrown in, so swings and roundabouts and all that...

Hi Mk1Macca,
This was the checklist I used from the forum on Thursday when we picked up mine:
1. Performance pack (GTI logo on brake calipers)
2. Two keys (make sure they have GTI engraved plastic pieces and both open and start the car)
3. English manuals
4. V5C Document and 12 Month Tax (both will be posted out later but you should get a letter to say the tax is in the post)
5. iPod lead - lighting cable
6. Locking wheel nut and tools in the boot
7. Service plan (ask about service intervals)
8. Full Tank of Fuel/4 gallons tho’ is standard
9. Dynaudio (Sub in the spare wheel and marking on tweeters located in the pillars)
10. Set of mats
C. Quality control:
1. Check delivery mileage and reset if dealership hasn't already (hold mileage reset button for 30 seconds)
2. Check the oil, water and other fluids and that they are not left at shipping levels
3. Look very carefully for any small dents or chips. Crouch low and look along the sides of the vehicle
4. Make sure dealer has filled in and stamped the PDI part of the service book
5. Check panel alignment
6. Test full, half beam, indicators, fog lights, hazard warning and interior lights
7. Test rear lights and make sure all 4 sections are working
8. Check tyres for damage, pressures and the spare in the boot
9. Check the transport blocks have been removed from the suspension springs
10. Check the bolt caps and centre badges have been fitted on the wheels
11. Check the VIN number (in the windscreen) matches the VIN number on all your documents.
Hope it helps  Enjoy collecting, it's double the fun for you two!!!

That's what I mean, OTT. This is all covered by their own PDI which you get a copy of.

OCD more like. But hey, I just handed it to the Husband to go through. I was too busy being giddy!
-
Certainly read all this stuff but a lot of it is not really necessary so long as you are fairly close to the dealer - if its a hundred miles away then be OCD as you will not be very happy at having to drive all the way back for them to add the GTD metal bits on the key fobs or stamp the PDI in the book or suchlike.
My advice is fairly simple:
1. If its a new car - make sure its the car you ordered with regard to colour and options (or in your case definately with the options they told you it had on it - if you find any more - keep quiet!)
2. Make sure that here are no cosmetic issues or damage of any sort on the car as once you drive away the dealers responibility for stuff like that quickly starts to diminish.
With both cars do have a quick look under the bonet as often rags are left there by the PDI chaps - check your levels in the next day or so but don't get too immersed in the technical stuff!
The comment earlier re insurance and second owners - my undertanding is the new car replacement aspect of policies is related to the gae of the car (ie up to 12 months) rather than how many owners, but do check with your insurer.
In terms of the pre-reg car - to a large degree it is what it is and I would be extremely careful to check for cosmetic damage to the bodywork - particulary wheels as anything discovered more than a day or two afterwards is going to be the subject of an argument.
Finally - if they are nearby I would give consideration to making two trips and collecting the cars seperately so you can focus attention on each transaction individually.

I ended up rejecting my GTI due to what was missed on the PDI so you need to check everything yourself!

I think you would notice quite quickly if it was the wrong colour

Does that work?
-
First thing I thought when reading the headline was to make sure you take another driver in addition to yourself!
-
Ha! No fear, my wife and I are both going together.
Actually, the dealer is picking us up in the morning so we can both drive home together

You would be surprised! Cars can get delivered in the wrong colour or shade of interior trim. Happened to my ex Father in Law with a French car he bought in grey. After four months he went to buy a touch up stick, told them the colour. Realising it did not quite match, he then brought it back to complain they had sold him the wrong colour of touch up stick. Thats when the investigation began that resulted in their realising they had given him the car in the wrong shade of grey (I think at that time there were two greys (no not 50) not that dissimilar). Oops!
The point is it easy for folks to miss something basic in the excitement of a showroom collection of a new car - be careful out there!
-
Well, bad start :(
Both cars were driven round to the car park to inspect. Windows all fogged up internally.
Valeter was clearly blind. The car, although cleanish, was very much not ready. Sticky marks from stickers, some stickers still on. Life shine product still visible on panels with visible swirl marks. Some scratches to the drivers side sill. Over spray from the scotch guard on the inside over the console and sills..
Very shoddy job.
They're going to re-valet today and I'll try another handover tomorrow.
The 1.6 had a spot on the drivers seat and a light scratch on the drivers door. Both are being sorted while we wait. Headlights were fogged up, but apparently this isn't an issue?
Not the amazing start I was hoping for.

Hope you didn't have to travel far - perhaps they could give you a freebie by way of apology for your wasted journey?
-
My headlights fogged up for the first two weeks so it might be normal on the Golf? Maybe raise it with the garage and say you'll keep an eye on it.
Not a good show by the garage when you've bought 2 cars from them at what must be over £50,000! You'd think they'd be making sure everything is immaculate. My car wasn't perfect (a few light scratches visible in some light and a slight ding in an arch.) The garage offered me a full tank of diesel and another go at valeting it and also paid for my reg transfer. I didn't even push them that hard so you should be able to get something for your inconvenience!
-
I was offered a small valeting kit when they left my transport pucks in (and I subsequently found them) and asked for a VW motorsport umbrella instead - I think they got off lightly! Can't complain about the finish on my free Autoglym Lifeshine (for moaning to VW UK that my car was built almost 3 weeks after schedule), the valeter at my dealership was as good as i'd expect.
-
Macca that's a real shame as it's your first brand new car too.
However, it sounds like your dealer is handling it well and trying to make amends in the best way they can. If they scotch guarded the interior without leaving it to air it would've caused the windows to fog up I guess?
If it makes you feel better my headlights get a bit of fog at the bottom, I think it's quite common with Xenons? Going to stick a couple of sachets of silica gel in to see if it makes a difference.
Hopefully tomorrow goes smoothly!
-
Apparently the headlights are vented due to the heat build up from the xenons, which would mean they will fog up from time to time?
Anyhow, went back to the dealership today to collect the GTD. The valeter had had another go, but it still wasn't what I'd class as perfect. No biggy as it's going to Marc at Heavenly Detail for a proper detail and paint protection application hopefully next weekend.
The over spill from the interior protection was still there, but have told them they can sort this when it has to go in to the body shop. Sadly, the scratches on the drivers sill are going to need paint, which is a bit of a pisser for a brand new car. The guy who was there today mentioned it as an area prone to this kind of thing, and with him being a true VW nut, we looked at the parts list to see what VW had on offer. They do two sill trims, one small, and one big. The bigger is in black and i'm seriously considering it to keep this area in good condition.
They're listed at £120 something fitted, but i'm sure there's a deal to be done if they're having to have the car back to get painted. Anyone got any opinions on these? The car is a very dark colour anyway, so the black trims shouldn't stand out.
Suggested that an iPhone lightening lead for my wives car would go some way to make up for the second attempt at a handover, and he was able to find one from a car yet to PDI'd and gave it to me along with a USB lead - so happy with that :)
Paperwork signed, I now have the car home and on the driveway. What an amazing car! I'm absolutely in love with it :)
Here she is, home.

Sills are prone to scratching by people wearing gritty shoes and not picking up their feet when they get out of the car - same can be said for any car. Seems that everyone who's been in your car since the factory haven't taken much care. I'd be wanting those sill protectors for free if I were you.
Interior protection overspill might require replacement of trim pieces - Acetone is a component of most fabric protectors and it permanently marks many plastics, whitening them.
Looks like those minor issues haven't dulled your enthusiasm, enjoy!
-
Which dealer did you use? I'm also in Peterborough, i'll keep an eye out. :)
-
Hey :)
Robinsons (nee Cooks) in Peterborough.
Despite the little niggly issues (which are more me being super anal), the dealership has been really good. Would recommend them, which is rare for me.
I have a forum sticker in the back window, so you'll know it's me.
-
Ah fail, my night blue is in the dealership car park at the moment having arrived there on Friday. I have declined their services to add lifeshine etc to the car as I have all the detailing stuff myself at home. I'm happy for them just to wash it and i'll pick it up.
Wonder how they got their hands on the GTD you bought. Was it a cancelled order? They sold their red demo before I could drive it, had to wait for the Carbon Grey one to return from fleet duty for a test drive. Quite happy with the service thus far!
-
I believe the sales manager had ordered it as a personal car. I spotted it before it got PDi'd and bought it :)
When did you test drive? Which red demo? I know they just got a new red demo (arrived at the same time as mine), but I thought they couldn't sell it for 90 days?
-
It was in the car park in October, I ordered start of November, I drove their grey one a week later but that too got sold to some mug who paid over list.
Edit : better not have taken the lead from my car else there will be hell to pay if it's missing! I need both and have seen both in my car already lol
-
Over list price??
-
Yeah, aj13usb. I worked out what it cost to build, they sold it for 1k more with 4k miles on it! The 50 I did were pure abuse!
Edit : in taking about the October cars, both are long gone, and both sold for more than they cost to build.
-
I feel more and more happy with my deal :)
-
When you say 'cost to build' do you mean list price?
-
Of course
-
'Cost to buy' then really....
